I decided to start a game as Denmark, and it ended horribly. I started in 1939, and was annexed within nine months.

I tried again, with a slightly modded game, starting in 1933, and giving some VPs to Iceland, so I could survive the occupation of Jutland and Copenhagen.

This may take some time to complete, as it my first AAR, and as I don't have as much time to write and post as I would like to. BEar with me.

Thanks Stage Puppet. I don't have especially high hopes... Iceland might survive longer.

1 January, 1933. Office of the Prime Minister. Copenhagen, Denmark.

"Is the Prime Minister in? I must speak with him."
"Its New Years Day. Of course he isn't here."
"What is this about? I'll take a message."
"This is too important. Give me his home number."
"I can't do that for no reason. Why is this so important?"
"That bastard Hitler has made himself a dictator in Germany. Thats why this is important."
"I don't know whats wrong with Hitler, but I'll connect you... here."
"Thanks. Hopefully it won't come to what I think."

Several rings later...

"Hello?"
"Mr. Prime Minister?"
"Who are you? What do you want?"
"Mr. Prime Minister, this is Colonel Jurgen, your Chief of Military Intelligence."
"Go on. What are you doing bothering me on my holiday?"
"I have some disturbig news. Hitler has made himself a dictator in Germany."
"So?"
"Hitler is going to bring Europe into another war. I am sure of this."
"What makes you sure? How can you possibly think this?"
"Hitler has been promising the German people a return to their former glory. He has promised them the return of all lands that once flew the German flag, and if you remember, Mr. Prime Minister, that includes the area of Southern Sleswig, which we regained after the Great War. Hitler will try to take that back."
"You make a convincing case, Colonel. But not enough to mobilize."
"Mobilizing won't do any good. Germany has a far more powerful military than we can ever dream of. What we need to do is to seek friends. The British and the French. The two powers could defeat German if war were to come."
"I see. Colonel, you are in charge of everything relating to Germany and this Mr. Hitler. See what you can find out, and make any practical preparations you see necessary to protect us."
"Thank you, sir."

This is the introduction. I apologize for my lack of Danish. I don't speak a word of it, and I am too lazy to look up potential Danish names.

lmao @seidita

I am still planning on writing this. However, right now I am out of town, using a computer in a library. Obviously, I cannot install HoI and play it, as the librarians would strongly object.

I'll get on this as soon as I return home.

Good luck........ Instead of ending up like Seidita, wait until a weak nation joins Axis (Portugal, maybe Argentina or Nationalist Spain, and odd ones that might join in......) and then strike with all you can spare there, and you should get something (if you research and make them better than what the AI does.....not too hard......... you'll do fine).

1933... Denmark begins to rearm after 70-odd years of neutrality. With the growth of German militarism to the south, Denmark looks to the United Kingdom and France for a military alliance. Being rebuffed, Denmark is forced to attempt to build up enough to defend itself.

The first new military units are brought online by June, as the 3rd and 4th Infantry divisions are formed. Equipped with the newest weapon in the Danish arsenal: the British-designed Lee-Enfield Pattern 4 rifle.

These two divisions each have a brigade of the Danish Engineers attached to them, to assist in bridging and defensive work.

Additionally, the keel is laid of the first of the new Tordenskiold class of battleships. Displacing 33,000 tons, and armed with eight 15" guns, she will be a capable force in the Baltic. She is based extensively on the HMS Queen Elizabeth.

1934: UGHHHHHHHHH DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!!

I installed the patch. Now I can't load the save file. I don't know why. So I uninstall... and my save is gone. DAMN.

I guess thats the end of this one. I had fun, though. I'll try a new one... maybe Canada...

Well. Denmark actually started upgrading its defences before WWI. In 1910 Denmark stated to create three naval defence forts outside Copenhagen. The three forts were Flakfortet, Middelgrundsfortet and Trekronerfortet. The largest - Flakfortet - were placed on an artificial island that was 30.000 m^2 and 28m tall at the highest point.

Why these three forts did nothing when the German invasion fleet closed in on Copenhagen and continued towards Norway is a mystery that historians can talk about for hours.

Actually the name is Tordenskjold - at least in modern Danish. It means Thunder(=torden) Shield(=skjold). It's named after the greatest Danish naval hero Peder Wessel that got the noble name Tordenskjold. He was a tactic genius that on several occations beated superior Swedish forces in the Danish - Swedish war in the early 18th century. It's quite interesting that the navy that early honored him by naming a ship after him, because he died in an honorless duel in 1720 and only got an official funeral about ten years ago.

MogOre: I was referring to the 1864 war, which I believe was the last conflict involving armed Danish soldiers.

I didn't know that about those forts. Quite impressive-sounding.

I didn't know the proper spelling of the Tordenskjold. The game defaulted the name to Tordenskiold, and as I said, I don't know a word of Danish.

And, unfortunatly, this AAR is quite over, as the save game managed to corrupt itself, with absolutely no influence from me. ;)

But thanks for your input.
