ROBERT, DUKE OF NORMANDY, COUNT OF ARQUES
I: 1066-1079
Robert was made Duke of Normandy in 1066, at the age of just 12, by his father William the Conqueror. He immediately set about improving his realm. But Robert was unsatisfied with his territory. He owned only Arques. Therefore, he demanded that Evreux be given to him. The Count of Evreux, Richard de Vessy, refused multiple times. Finally, in 1067, it was decided to use force.
Robert raised his regiment in Arques and attacked Evreux. His vassals, Odo (Bishop of Avranches) and Richard Hastings (Count of Eu) were outraged, and Odo declared war on his liege. Hastings nearly joined them, but he stayed neutral, albeit very hostile to Robert.
Robert crushed de Vessy's forces and began the siege of Evreux. This was aided by William the Conqueror, his father, who sent a large force to aid him. Evreux fell quickly, and next Avranches was also taken. Evreux was added to Robert's lands, while Avranches was given a new bishop, Robert d'Harcourt, who was loyal to Robert.
Robert also appointed his court after the war. His Marshal died after just a month, and with the entire court being women except for John of Arques (who was extremely incompetent), no new marshal was employed. Steward Maud also began a slow collapse. She first became stressed in 1068, then depressed in 1070, and then she caught the intestinal worm in 1073.
In 1070, Robert married into the Vermandois family. He was married to Adelaide. With a single act, the houses of Rollo and Charlemagne had been united. Adelaide became pregnant quickly, giving birth to a son, Roger, in 1071, and Isabeau in 1072.
Evreux became prosperous again in 1075, the effect of looting having weared off. Both Arques and Evreux began building sawmills, and Normandy was beginning to prosper. In 1076, Pope Anselm died, and Stanislaw of Krakow was elected the new pope. He asked to be placed under Robert's protection, thus giving Robert control of the pope.
Roger was stressed from his first year, but he became depressed in 1075, and then Cruel, taking after his father. Isabeau also gained a reputation for killing pets, becoming vengeful. Both were given a court education. Robert was deeply dissapointed in his children. But then, in 1079, Adelaide became pregnant again...
