1396 A.D

The prophecies of Chiliasts and Kabalists have not come true. Anno Domini 1392 had not brought the punishing sword of God. The dancing death with it's legion of undead. Nor did it bring the Messiah and the Antichrist, or the prophesized battle between good and evil. There was no end of the world in 1392, nor was it coming in the next year or finally next 4 years. How cheated, must have the occultists felt, when their holy prophecies betrayed them. One might claim Tacitisque senescimus annis, but no my friends non of these. During the years when the common folk awaited the coming of the Messiah, the cruel Medieval reality lived on, with it's deaths, wars, violence. Adultery, murder, theft were common in the age, when moral values dissapeared, and only very few wished to face this reality. Oh these foolish very few...

1396 Annus horribilis, has saw many disasters for both the Empire and the Christendom. The increasing autonomy of Italian city-states, and in particular the Visconti of Milan has brought nothing but confusion to the much decayed Empire. On the East, the terrible hordes of nomads are battling over the control of the world. Timur called the Lame has defeated his enemies in the Golden horde reasserting his power. The Ottoman turks, the scurge of Christendom, are encroaching on noble Sigismund's domains. The two forces prepare for the ultimate struggle, in which the fate of Hungary should be determined. In the west meanwhile, are struggle between the Plantagenets and Valois continue, as the counterattack of French forces succesfully drove the English from most French lands, yet a new disaster grows in the French plan, as the succession of Charles VI, proves to be a disastrous one. In the Empire, a civil war seems inevitable as the Ghibelline block consisting of imperial princes of Staufen dynasty, oppose the continuation of the corrupt rule of Weneclaus the Drunkard. Facing them are the Guelphen block led by the King of Germany himself, with his numerous petty aristocracy. Who with Frederick von Staufen, Kuno von Anhalt, Frederick von Brunswick, wore the three Swabian lions on his right chest, who with Weneclaus Luxembourg, Sigismund Luxembourg, Gian Galleazzo Visconti wore the bohemian lion.

Yet this tale is neither on the Absent Four Riders of the Apocalypse who feed on tears on children, nor on great Kings and Emperors...

Hey!
This is my second attempt to CK AAR. This AAR is a tribute to Alzhazen's Sins of the Father(btw is there any info on what's with Alzhazen?). In this world, nothing has basically changed when compared to the real 1396, apart from the continuation of Staufen dynasty which managed during the time to [/SIZE] become titular princes of the empire, dukes of Brabant, Dukes of Lorraine counts of Holland, and rulers of Franconia, Swabia, Cologne, Mainz.

Why such a late start?

And I do like the style.

RGB, I love late period of the middle ages. The pace of the story is going to be painfully long, so no worries on the date :p.

I love it already! Though how did you get everything to go historical up to 1392?

Chapter 1: The curves of Burgundy.

Through the small window of the room, in the background of the crystal clear blue sky, one could see 3 towers. One belonging to the City Hall, was a part of the old Rathaus erected by Cologne city authorities during the reign of Henry VII*. The second tower was a part of the local prison, and which was dubbed with the glorious colloquial name "Your Mother", after an anonymous soldier's answer, which according to the legend was stationed in the tower, to the forces besieging Cologne, in 1270. The last the the furthest away tower, was the a brick red tower belonging to the church of St. John the Baptist. This tower, not surprisignly, also had it's name "The pigeon tower", called so after the large numbers of birds who had a weird habit of flying around the tower at least 10 times daily. Even today the birds flew frantically around the tower, frightened by the church bells.

Behind the walls, along the monastery street, one could hear the incoming caravans, from all of the Empire, singning local anthems, and joyous travelling songs.
It was a sunny wednesday, a market day, during which hundreds of merchants and buyers gather around the city marketplace. The marketplace was loaded with at times disturbing noises, but also with beautiful handcrafts. Going through the marketplace one could have smelt the odor of salted fish, listen to the magistrate announcements, buy beautiful woodworks, and ocassionally be robbed by the city ruffians.

"There singing already", thought Konrad, suddenly surprised by a female hand around his stomach. It was the hand of Nathalie Antionette de Macon, a petty noblewoman of Burgundy, whom Konrad seduced during his return to Cologne, from a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

"Konrad, mon amour, don't dream away... As your needed here, hihi" whispered Nathalie to him, playfully kissing his neck. The burgundian lady had no wish to spend her afternoons on philosophical thought on the city.

"Oh what a fantastic land this Burgundy must be", thought Konrad as he watched the completely naked Nathalie. Each land has it's own customs, and whereas German beauties never allowed themselves to be completely stripped by Konrad, this Burgundian young lady willingly stripped herself to the bare skin. How beautiful must Burgundy be with it's soft plains and mountains...
"Mon amour... oui"

Konrad von Staufen, the titular duke of Swabia, an non-existent title, lord of Zahringen, Bresigau and Ulm, heir to the Duke of Brabant, Frederick von Staufen, also called the grand duke of the west, was in shortcut no one. Living only on the mercy of the Imperial court of King Weneclaus, he spent most his time either in bed with courtly ladies, or out in taverns indulging in fist fights. Come to think of it, he was neither good at the former nor latter. The 18 year old "Duke", in terms of male-female relations was perhaps no wiseman, but as he claims, he had the fair share of things. As he always boasts, it is not the quantity of ladies whom he "befriended" by the quality of their good looks. Had the former been the major factor in determining the wisdom of Konrad on this matters, one might call him a fool. Yet his most recent conquest, the fair lady of Burgundy was definately one of the most beautiful women in Cologne.

"My Guinevere"
"Oh Parzifal"
"What?"
"Nevermind, oh"

He made love too her passionately, and she returned the same passion to him. Yet there would have been no "oh"s if not the help of father Clemente, of the Dominicans, who helped the two lovers get to know each other, at his church.

As he ran through the hills of Burgundy, he turned Nathalie around, and pressed her hard towards himself. Before however he might have realised his intentions, with a great noise the door of his room, slammed against the wall, and with equal speed and noise a unfriendly fist landed straight on his face, throwing him powerfully down on the ground.

"Konrad, your under arrest" exclaimed a ugly looking guard, armed with a fine sword and a dagger at his belt.
Before Konrad could have said anything, a second solid punch landed on his face. He was silently tied with a rope, while some soldiers were eagerly looking at Nathalie.

"Don't you dare scum, I'm the Duke!"
"Haha, of course your highness. Take the harlot to the city magistrate, identify her and send her back to her father, who will be eager to find a out the man who shamed his honour. Will you your highness, must have to be a veeery important persona, to speak up to Imperial Guards" before pausing the ugly looking guard, who now was clearly the leader of the band of soldiers, kicked him in the ribs."Lord Rosenrath will surely be happy to hear o you..."

When Konrad woke up from the last punch that knocked him down, he found himself on one of the horses. He was more of being tied to the horse, rather being seated on the horse itself. The soldiers escorting him had skillfully tied his hands and legs under the horse’s belly rendering any possible moovements of limbs, and making each step of the horse a painful torture to the tied "Duke".
A word must be said on Konrad's oppressors mainly because of their extraordinary individual features. There were 6 men, all armed in full armours, or more precisely a breastplate, plate protection for both legs and arms, these were supplemented with numerous mail protection under the plated armour. The band itself was lead by the already mentioned ugly thug, whom Konrad managed to get to know, through listening to mercenary conversations as, Kunz von Etzin. If one would take a closer look at von Etzin, one wouldn't say he was completely ugly. The long golden hair and somewhat cherubin-esque face, combined with a powerfully built body, made this man a possible object of women's desires. Yet it was an ugly scar stretching from the eyebrow to the cheek and the broken nose which completely shattered his image.
Von Etzin’s companions seemed to be no better then their commander. Konrad did not manage to remember their names, but they must have been rather dull, and possibly half of them held the name Henry, which became widespread after the rule of Henry VII, Konrad’s great-great-great-great grandfather. One could actually add to more greats, who knows.

As the company moved along the city streets no one dared to intercept fully iron clad men, but before the company could have move out of the city, the street they were heading to, suddenly darkened from black habits. It was the Dominicans who just returned from mass.
The Dominicans proved to be a serious annoyance to the company as not only did the block the street, but also started questioning the men on the tied Konrad.

“Good Christians what are you doing. That man cannot lay like that” Spoke out father Marcus
“Domini Canes…” spat out Kunz “Out of the way pater, if you don’t want to get your bold head battered.”
Before Kunz managed to ride up to father Marcus to kick him in the face, his horse was stopped by a man tall as a tower, brother Jonas, called by locals “Goliath” for his unusual height and strength.
“My lord, please release this man, be he a criminal, he does not deserve such treatment.” Spoke calmly brother Jonas.
Kunz having dismounted from his horse, walked up to the “Goliath” only to find himself around two heads shorter then the giant. Yet this did not discourage him at all.
“Listen you bible boy, I’m giving you and your herd of sodomici 5 eye blinks to move out, before we batter you up”.
Brother Jonas did not respond, with a stone face expression he continued to stand in front of Kunz, and after 5 eye blinks only to be kicked in the nuts by Kunz. At this sign, other brothers rushed to the aid of the falling giant. 20 black habits charged the mounted men.
“Pax, brothers, Pax” shouted father Marcus, before he was struck in the face. “Oh, Lord have mercy, Beat that son of $#@%”.

In this whole confusion, one of the brothers managed to take care of Konrad, who would have been almost killed, as his horse was jumping around frightened by the fight. After untying him and said:
“Your good to go, with God”
“Thank you noble brothers, I promise to repay my debts to you one day”
“Just go!”

******
“Herr Rosenrath”
“Meine Herren”
“We all know why we’ve called you here”
“No my lords, it seems I am the only one not informed on the situation”
“You see my Herr Rosenrath, there are 6 men in the city prison; they claim to be retainers of your noble house. One Kunz von Etzin if I recall correctly. You might be wondering what these men are doing in our prisons, well last night they caused trouble to our city. The completely wrecked one of the taverns, destroying windows, chairs, doors, then they threatened the public order, riding armoured with the swords unsheathed. Finally they have gotten into a serious fight with the noble Dominican brothers, seriously wounding father Marcus. We demand answers Herr Rosenrath, and recompensation…”
“That rat” thought Michael Herr von Rosenrath, burggraf of Rosenrath and loyal vassal to Weneclaus. “Since his scum family moved into Cologne they have been a pain in the ass for our family”. Von Rosenrath of course spoke of Heinke Hollabrunn, his archenemy, the wealth city patrician, currently burgmeister of Cologne. Along with Hollabrunn were 4 other distinguished city elders, who formed the city council. Dieter Schpack, the goldsmith, Hildebrand Metzner, the wealthiest citizen of Cologne, Fritz von Hohenberg lord on Hohenberg, citizen of Cologne, and Baldassare Biumi representative of Archbishop of Cologne.

“We suggest” spoke together the city council “To fine Herr Rosenrath 50 gulden”
“50 gulden?! I demand justice. I will recall upon my liege, your King Weneclaus”.
“Herr Rosenrath, you know the political situation. Cologne itself is under protection from both Frederick of Brabant and the Archbishop of Cologne. You do not want trouble understand”
Rosenrath managed to capture Hollabrunn’s smile, “That f&^*& rat, but don’t worry. Soon, soon we will solve our differences.”
“Alright, meine Herren, I will comply. But I ask you what have you done with the man, that my retainers we looking for. You do realise we was under arrest, by order of the King himself.”
“We have done all in powers Herr Rosenrath, that the individual be captured. And a fair trial will be held for him here.”
“Here?” smiled ironically Rosenrath “In his very own city? Kunrad of Cologne, ha! I have to displease you, that I am directly responsible for bringing him to my liege. Imperial good above all, meine Herren.
“Of course, of course” assured Hollabrunn, who spoke from the council ever since Rosenrath appeared in the council chambers.
“Then I’ll be off, tomorrow my knechten will deliver the money, and I promise you that the troublemakers will pay for their action. Fare well meine Herren” after which Rosenrath left the chambers closing the chamber doors with much passion.

“We cannot just leave this like that” spoke the Goldsmith “If it is by the King’s order we must hand in the young Staufen”
“I disagree, my friend, the young Kuonrad is needed. If we give in into the demand’s of the King, his unruly power will spread even here in Cologne.” riposted the von Hohenberg.
“I second that” replied Metzner
“Herr Biumi what are your thoughts?” asked Hollabrunn
“If we give 'em the boy, it will seem that we yield to that bastard of a King. Yet if we refuse, that shall give the King at pretext to justify an attack on us. Yet my gentleman, if... We pretend to hand in the boy, but then recapture him secretly, and free him, not only would we manage to undermine the King's authority, and thus bring more people to our cause.
"But we first have to find him don't we Herr Biumi?"
"I don't see a problem in that..."

Intrigue developing. I like the story thus far. It will be interested to find out what happened to our amorous hero.

Very interesting so far, you have a very unique style. I like the pace of your dialogue- it keeps things moving, a very present tense story, which is nice.
