Huh? I don't recall the hatchet being something that can be detached in TT without it being shot off.

The original TRO has the hatchet listed as handheld. Under the rules below from Tactical Operations it should be possible for the Hatchetman to throw the axe at a target. And other mechs with hands should be able to pick it up, if it has been put down or dropped, and throw it at a target.

Throwing at Another Unit: Use all the rules above for throwing at a hex, including the modifiers added for the number of hexes thrown, except instead of a punch attack the throwing unit makes a charging attack (per standard rules, the relative Piloting Skill Rolls of the attacking and target unit are taken into consideration). If the attack is successful, apply the damage as noted above to the target, using the direction of the attack to determine the appropriate location. For battle armor, the damage only applies to a single trooper; for conventional infantry, the attack is treated as though it originated from another infantry unit. If the attack is a failure, determine where it lands as described above; regardless of whether a unit is in the new hex, the attack fails to strike that unit (it automatically strikes any other non-unit object, such as terrain or a building).

Physical Weapons: The following Physical Attack Weapons can be thrown as inanimate objects (whether by the unit they are mounted on, or by another unit if the unit picks the object up (see Physical Weapons under Picking Up Inanimate Objects, p. 92): Hatchet, Mace, Sword, and Vibrosword. Use all the rules described above, with the following exception. If a unit is built to use the physical attack weapon (i.e. it can use the weapon in a physical weapon attack), apply a
–1 modifier to the punch attack. When rolling to determine damage to the physical weapon, roll 1D6: on a result of 1-4, nothing happens, on a result of 5-6, the weapon takes a critical hit, applied to the topmost open critical slot. If the weapon is damaged, it can still be thrown as an inanimate object until all its critical slots are destroyed, but it cannot be used to make a physical weapon attack as soon as 1 critical slot is assigned.

Huh, neat. I have literally not read that before. I've not even heard it happening in fluff (though I'm not fully up to date on that admittedly).

I'm also struggling to recall it happening in the fluff. It would make a really cool in game animation too, but that's probably not high on the list of things to get done or even on the list.

But the real question is:

At night, are the spotlights emitted from the knees?

I hope it does. I decided to check this photo from the livestream and see, but it didn't show lights on the Hatchetman at all. I'm guessing the lights haven't been added yet. Hopefully when the lighting has been added, it will come from the legs. That would be the...Bee's Knees :).

You go sit in the corner and think about what you've done. :p

Thank you @HBS_Mazzoni for such a detailed post, I really love how that final promo image so clearly screams that the hatchet has just been ripped from that poor Locust. Care to share any concept art for Urban Warfare whilst you're here? :D

thank you for some wonderful artwork @HBS_Mazzoni

I suspect that Hatchet gif is going to become meme worthy around here :)

We need a smaller version of the hatchet *.gif for thumbs-ups :D

and another one with squishy LCT splat underneath for thumbs down...:D
*not an artist*
I wonder if there are any artists around who could make this happen?

I used the hatchet as a thumbs up anyway...In all it's huge gif glory :D

The names are just something I use to inspire me while I’m working, but it’s also a helpful label when talking about them with the art team.

Well, I can see how the "Maniac" pattern earned its name, at least, thanks to the use of red on the right side.

Makes me wonder how many Hatchetmen are going to be nicknamed "Johnny."

Throwing a three-ton axe with the precision of an Olympic medalist is a pretty metal way to die.

In terms of game rules though, hand-held weapons have always been rather odd, trying to ride the line between compatibility with existing rules and the common-sense factor. It gets weirder when a mech loses a built-in hand-held weapon, then some other mech scoops it up and starts swinging or blasting with it despite now being technically overweight.

but it is technically not overweight.
all meks have the ability to carry 'x' amount of cargo...also it is a time honored tradition to brask and branch off a tree or rip a limb from a mek and use them to club an opponent to death.:D

I’ll be combining naming my first Career Mode Hatchetman, Seminole Wind.

After a mashup of:

and:

and in true Mercenary fashion, “Diggin’ for Silver, Diggin’ for Gold.” : )

most of you all are probably far too young to get this reference for my first HCT pilot......
