Devs Pull Back Iron Curtain on Details for Upcoming Title
GDC 2011 – BattleGoat Studios and Paradox Interactive today announced that they’ve released a new developer interview for upcoming historical grand strategy title Supreme Ruler: Cold War. In this latest video, BattleGoat Studios Lead Designer David Thompson gives players a bit of insight to what they can look forward to in the latest addition to the Supreme Ruler series.

Supreme Ruler: Cold War is the next installment in the Supreme Ruler series and gives players control over a 1950’s United States or Soviet Union as they try to lead their country to glory. Players make economic, diplomatic, domestic, and military decisions to grow and modernize their nation to ensure its place atop the rest of the world.

Looks great. The interface does indeed look intimidatng, but no more than most of Paradox's ones and I learned my way around them. Chris, can you give us any info on how conquest of territory works? Can you release nations from territory you control?

I did not watch the video, so maybe my question has been answered: When is the demo due?

We've generally released the demo just before the game comes out. Too busy working on the game until it goes gold. The time between going gold and release are spent on getting the demo done.

I'm not sure if we're changing how land capture works, not my area. As for tension, I've seen the designs regarding the Defcon rising based on world actions that are needed to gain Sphere influence but other than that vague descriptions I can't really say more at this time. Again, not the areas I'm working on.

(back to map editing, tech/equipment lists and graphics work...)

I have to admit, it still looks daunting but the improvements I have seen look fantastic.

One of the biggest problems I had was knowing I had a problem but not how to fix it, or what I needed to do to avoid it in the first place. I can't really tell from the video is this is made easier but I'm inclined to think so. On of the features mentioned was being able to aid or influence a certain party or person to head of Government. In the SR2020 game you could decide your political leaning in the initial set up. Does this mean along with the last feature mentioned that you could take Ireland for example and give it a communist government?

Good looking game so far, I'm really looking forward to getting a hold of it.

I must say that I was a bit turned off when he said that you might find yourself controlling as many as 2-3 thousand units. Micromanaging thousands of units is probably the single most horrible task I can think of, that and the horrible game speed killed SR: 2020 for me (I did enjoy a lot of the economic elements though). Unless managing units is easier in CW (and in a way that doesn't involve you basically just letting the AI wage wars for you) and the game speed is far better then it was in SR: 2020 I will probably pass on the game.

That said, I will still keep my eye on it since it looks interesting.

I agree with you here. The game speed is very important. You need to be a able to manage all of those units, but then you also have to think about how long the game will be. The cold war was over 40 years of history, and with the old Supreme Ruler 2020 game speed, I don't think many people, inlcuding me, could have the patience to get to the end of the war.

if i'm managing 2000-3000 units and if the order of battle is indeed accurate, i need to have the ability to setup theatres. at least that way i can divide the 2000 units into 400, 500, 100 etc...overall looks good but i noticed that speed looks abit slow. at 4:19 the user switched the speed of the game from 'very fast' to 'fast' and the units were still inching along. one of my complaints about supreme ruler was that i would spend several hours on the game and only have a 4 months done. i really hope since the game is ideally between the years 49-89, that i wouldnt have grey hair myself by the time i got to 1989 during my first run at the game.

I have no insight whatsoever into the ongoing development of SR CW, but really this sort of thing is rarely indicative of final performance. Game is still quite a bit away from release, and there are usually optimisations at some stage.

sure, i understand. just saying that it looks good and echoing the chorus regarding game speed. thats all.

Looks to me like the player in that video at the time you mentioned went from very slow to slow. I think the chorus thats worried about the games speed is going to have a difficult time with this Grand Strategy Game. Its not looking like its going to be a game thats finished in just a handful of hours of playtime.

I would like to see an in game interface more artistic and less mechanic actually. And it may be too squarish and metallic, kind of reminds me of an old game boy menu. Like the look of the game menu tho

And...oceans are tooooo dark
