I haven't seen this event in long time and can't see it in wiki either so I'm confused.

(not talking about the legendary paragons' situation with same name. Though good question, does that event also trigger since it used to require the ascension perk that got changed to biomorphosis?)

Good, I hated it, I literally avoided low-habitability planets just because of this event. Though it's probably just bugged, as it's still in tech description. Universal Macrophage mutation is the same not working at least in one game I tried.

I've personally like seeing as many events as possible so I sometimes tried to trigger it unsuccessfully with varying results. It always felt kinda like undercooked event chain so not surprise if it isn't just a bug

The event has been commented out in 4.0. I removed it from the wiki. Perhaps someday it'll get reworked. But I doubt it, just like the plague event chain that has been commented out for ages as well.

Would be kinda nice if wiki had page for old removed events for historical context at least :'D otherwise I'm going to in future wonder if I hallucinated the whole thing

Thank God. It was not very functional even in 3.14. When they were modifying pop numbers across all the events someone probably rediscovered it, cringed, and decided to just bury it in a hole instead of dealing with it. Which I support.

The only useful thing about that event is that it could potentially be used to get Tomb World Preference on your primary species, but the Self-Modified trait blocked you from further modifying the species. Also, the default traits of the new species were generally random and terrible.

Well, in the original release version it was relatively more flavourful, because there were just less events out there.

It also used to be more useful because habitability modification used to be in a later tier than basic genetic modification. Now it's in the same tier (maybe it should not be?), so there's barely any time for it to be useful before you can just modify it manually yourself.

Habitability also wasn't an important enough obstacle to be worth modifying climate preferences for in 3.14. All the things you did, anyway, yielded worlds with fixed habitability or perfect habitability.
