Now, curse upon my unfortunate soul if this have been brgouht up before, but I couldn't find a thread about it...

How do I know, which version of the game I have? I know it's in english (DUH!), but there a different patch for UK and another one for North American package. I bought my version in Finland, so I'd imagine the UK version is sold over here, but the package claimed Strategy First as distributor - and I understand that they are the NA distributor.

Any way I can check this within the game? Or is there any functional difference between the two patches (UK vs. NA)?

The UK version has 'Koch Media' logo on the back of the box.

Yes the patches are different. Do not use the wrong one, It causes problems with reading the CD and the game is sometimes difficult to completely uninstall.

I would say that you have the NA version.

Thanks, Ugluduck!

Heck!
You may be lucky and be able to uninstall. However others have reported that after uninstalling the machine still thinks that EU is still in situ. This makes it impossible to reinstall.

If you are in this position then you will have to scour the registry for anything EU and delete.

In another thread (do a search for 'uninstall') Patric gave the following information:-

installShield creates a directory where it keeps all the information on installed software. On my machine it is 'C:program FilesInstallShield Installation Information'

'InstallShield Installation Information' is marked as hidden so to be able to find it you have to change folder options on you PC to show hidden files. Search for files containing 'Europa' in this directory and you will find a file called 'setup.ini' with the following content:

[Startup]
AppName=Europa Universalis
Engine=0
Copy=1
Source=0
[Languages]
Default=0x0009
count=1
key0=0x0009

On my PC this resides in: 'C:program FilesInstallShield Installation Information{A6F1BDF7-53A7-4AF6-84B9-0C51C722BC91}'. I'm not sure if the last directory name will be the same on all machines but I think so. Delete that directory and you will be able to make a clean install.

Thanks for the tips, Uglyduck. Luckily uninstall worked properly for me (Win98SE). I checked the folder mentioned, and it was gone.

However, the NA patch didn't install. Error message reads: 'Cannot find a copy of Europa Universalis installed in your computer. Aborting installation.' I went through the trouble of uninstalling it again, and even cleaning the registry entries, but this didn't help.

I then again tried the UK patch, and it worked. The game works, too (a four hour session yesterday, no crashes or anything). I even can view VP's, which were missing earlier. I do think you are right about me having the NA version, as when I check the version from europa.exe's properties, it states language as English (United States).

I think I'll stick with the UK patch for now, and brace myself for a mighty disappointment, when the game crashes at the final hurdles. Unless someone has a tip about the NA patch.

BTW: I have EU installed on drive E. Hopefully the NA patch isn't hardcoded for installation on C:progra...and_so_forth.

In case anyone is wondering the same thing!

I went and checked the package in the store, and those were Koch distributed. So it's the UK version they sell here in Finland (at least in CityAnttila in downtown Helsinki).

I don't understand where I got the idea of having a "Strategy First" -distributed package. Maybe it was in the parallel universe... Yeah, that must have been it... :confused:

Difference is quite simple really: in a box, US version has US flag, but the UK version English flag.

And yes, it seems Finland sells UK versions.
