i have just had 30,000 men do a vanishing act during a siege.all the regiments have returned home at zero strength.this is not the first time its happened but is the largest.its probably a bug but can anyone confirm that it is for my own peace of mind?

There's an Event that will disband random armies if your Ruler isn't involved in the War. As long as he's leading an Army somewhere, that Event doesn't fire (afaik). You should have gotten a Pop-Up notification about it tho (unless you've disabled some of those Event Notices).

If you've installed DVIP +Addons, I believe there's more Events added that could disband your troops under Feudal Contract, again tho, there should be a Notice when it fires.

no. game is DV with latest patch.armies have disbanded before during sieges/battles but usually only a few thousand so i lived with it but 30,000 was taking the mickey hence the post.

i have had armies disband for various reasons by event(full term of service, defect to enemy, desert etc)but i get pop ups for those.

Well regiments should only automatically disband when they are at 1% of their maximum strength I believe.

So yes you could have encountered a bug, but not a bug that many others have. It never happened to me (which doesn't mean it isn't frustrating for you).

So there is not much you can do about it.

Maybe siegeing armies disband automatically when at 0 morale??

There is a bug that your armies get their morale reset to 0 on a reload. So if you save your game and reload while your armies are in the field, they will all have 0 morale, even if the morale value indicated 100% in the army screens.

General rule: Don't save in the middle of battles or sieges. Wait until you have your armies disingaged, so you can move them to somewhere where they can regain morale in peace. Best bet is to not save during wars though.
