Is it possible to remove a disloyal heir from the line of succession?

I am about 25 years into a game as the Duchy of Saxony (Now also the Duchies of Braunschweig, Holstein and Thuringen) And I have a stupid amount of sons (2 bastards and 5 legitimate, plus 5 daughters). I recently had a little dispute with my vassal the Count of Weimar which very quickly became a war. I hit the 'grand mobilization' button (Overkill, I know) and 4 of my remaining 8 vassals refused to support me. Two then declared war on me, while declared war on the remaining two.

Now, while my two bastards, Sigfried and Meinhard, and my second legitimate son Konrad supported me, my eldest legitimate son, and therefore my heir, Thietmar, was among the rebels. Anyway, I smacked al the rebels down and confiscated their lands. Thietmat scuttled off to the magical realm of the pink shield, no longer my problem. Trouble is, he's still number one on my list of successors. Is there anyway to remove him from the list completely and install Konrad as my heir?

Well I'm already a kin slayer. I gave Kleve to my father, but by the time he got to 67, I was starting to get impatient to get it back

But how can I assassintae Thietmar? If he has a pink shield that means he has no court, right? And no court means no actions menu which means no assassination

Change succession laws to favor the strongest son, and then give Konrad a title.

As for the realm of Pink Shields. That is only temporary until Thietmar finds a place to call home, then you can assasinate him.

But I imagine that most of your loyalty issues have to do with you being a Kinslayer. That is a nasty trait to have, and especially your family members will fear and hate you. Also since you seem to confiscate land when you are smacking your rebel vassals around, you will probably have a bad reputation. Which just makes the loyalty issues even worse.

Select Thietmar's profile page, hit F12 and type "die" (without the quotes).
I wouldn't regard this as cheating since you would be perfectly within your rights to exclude this guy from succession, but CK has no option for you to do that.

I suppose the other question is do you care if he inherits? I mean if he has decent stats etc, he could make a good ruler & once your current ruler is dead ...

also, though not too sure of this, if he's in the limbo land of the pink shield you may find he wanders back - or is that something that only bastards do?

I wouldn't regard this as cheating

I would ... but I guess that is a matter of personal preference.

Also should you chose this method, then remember to press F12 again afterwards to close the cheat window.

I woud say just wait it out. Within a year Thietmar should have ventured into some court somewhere.

But if he is in a foreign court, and you are discovered, you will experience a retaliation from that court's AI ruler.

After several attempts to play as a French noble only to have my liege demand I forfeit my titles and destroy me when I refuse, and a few attempts at the Leofricsons in England, where the game actually forces me into rebellion resulting in a quick death, I seem to have finally found a duchy that can survive long enough to begin to learn how to play

I think it is more to do with my reputation than anything else, as I've had some loyalty problems before. Basically, when Germany descended into civil war after Heinrich died in battle and left the kingdom to a 3-year-old, I took the opportunity to go rogue for a couple of years, grab titles of several local counties, and invade them, before renewing my vows of allegiance in time for the war to swing back the king's way. Put it this way: I've gained a lot of counties, and 3 duchies, and I didn't inherit any of them (Though I did create one of the duchies).

In all honesty, thee really should be an option when you defeat rebellious vassals, to execute, banish, imprison or release them rather than just automatically letting them run away, but hey, that's for a different discussion.

Well his stats aren't awful. He's a very good diplomat, but overall I'd say that Konrad is slightly better anyway (a good soldier and a good steward, but an awful diplomat). Not that that is going to be the basis of my decision. I do care who inherits because IRL if I had a son who tried to destroy me, he would very definitely be written out of my will.

I would suggest playing as an independent duchy or a small kingdom for your first few games. Being a vassal is actually quite difficult a lot of times, since you'll almost always end up at war with your big, huge liege sooner or later.

I think it is more to do with my reputation than anything else, as I've had some loyalty problems before.

You can check what is hurting your vassals' loyalty. Just hold your courser over their loyalty and a tooltip will pop up showing what is affecting their loyalty.

Yeah, reputation seems to be the biggest burner, as all my vassals are losing over 4% p/m from it

I may do an AAR at some point when I have some more experience under my belt, and actually know what I'm doing. At the moment though, I'm fiddling around with this save and a couple of others to get to grips with the game, and to see who can provide an interesting story. (Aquitaine seems to be quite interesting, while Flanders makes a lot of money but doesn't get a chance to do very much)

I've had the worst of luck with wives, it seems. As the King of a rather huge kingdom (well, quite a few kingdoms), I seem to have my guy hate his wife and vise versa rather quickly. And since I choose my wives from their skills, that quickly became a problem on one particular occasion when she tried to assassinate me in her capacity as Spy master.

As the next guy I also had a wife who inexplicably hated me, after only a few years of marriage. I wanted lots of heirs, though, and she appeared very fertile, so instead of assassinating her I just gave her a county. She still produced a lot of children.

Aaah... Crusader Kings, I love you. It's also quite a bit easier to make a game fun again, than for example EU3. I just gave away most of my King titles to my many sons, because the game was getting boring (all of Iberia, France and most of The Holy Land, as well as Byzantine Emperor, without any territory there (which I grabbed from the one-demesne Byzantine Emperor/King of England).
