Do leaders die in combat?

Playing Portugal, I had my main army led by my sole General, assault a fortress. I took the castle, but then I noticed I no longer had my general. I know they have set death dates, but they can be killed in combat as well? Damn, and Portugal gets very few generals. I'm not sure if I'm going to get another. And looking though their historical leader list, Portugal doesn't get any non-explorer admirals either, huh?

Yes they can be killed in Battle - I have had it happen to me.

I think if you play with VP's you lose some if a leader dies under enemy fire. Lesson is - make sure your historical leaders command strong armies

They definitely can be killed. I lost several of mines this way during my first game (and they did command large armies).

I've lost many to (I assume) battle-related causes. It's not always easy to be sure. Often I have several battles going on simultaneously, due to my penchant for many small (20-30k) armies rather than a few large ones, so when the message about a leader's demise pops up I can't always remember where the hell he was and what he was doing.
