so if i want to do a random computer generated battle can i or can i just do the premade ones?

Yes, there is what we call Open Play, where the computer will generate a battle after you select the mission, the Order of Battle to use, the size, the length and the commander you want to play.
For really quick play, you can create a small meeting engagement. The enemy is right across the battlefield, no searching, just kicking butt.
