Kings of Italy, agressive and hungry.

Starting out, I wanted to chose a country that was not only in the middle of the mist. But also part of the HRE, in a heavily populated area, and in a place I could chose sides as I went.

The choice was obvious to me. It had to be somewhere in Italy.

Having played Tuscany in the demo. I set my eyes on Milan. Main reason why I chose that over Tuscany, or any of the others, was that I didn't like the large size of Venice and didn't mind the Republic in Tuscany, (less diplomatic options, for which I would have good use of later on in Milan)

Happy with my choice I start the game.

Under the Rule of Francesco I Sforza.

Milan would take it's first step into greatness. Although that had to wait right now. :)

The downside with Milan is this:

War whit Venice. :(
That I knew before starting so I had taken that into account. Better to start out with a war I figured. Holding the game for a while I needed to get a better look of the situation. Obviously they where stronger than me. They had 5.000 soldiers of who where 1.000 Knights right on my boarder. God knows what else in Venice.

My own army was 4.000 combined where 1.000 where knights. Fair enough I thought. I can work whit that. Quickly building one and hiring mercs for the other. I gained 2.000 inf more or less straight away. To my great luck Austria decced Venice to. Venice quickly moved their forces off my boarder and into Austria to gain the advantage.

Looking around the entire area looked a bit overwhelming. States in just about ever province.

Not standing about waiting for them to invade me. I moved my entire army into Brescia. Not bothering to wait for the inf that I was spawning. That had to wait.

Alongside starting the war I hired two painters. Those are a pain to get hold of later on so I hired them now. Leaving one slot open. I could always find a tech guy later. Diplomatic wise I made sure to make friends whit Savoy and Sicily. I know that would make it harder to take over later. But right now I didn't worry to much about that. It was long into the future.

While I was sieging Brescia I quickly set my goals to getting both Brescia and Verona. I could do that now as long as Austria was in the war. And I needed to get them quick. Moving step by step to Venice itself. I could hopefully gain a favorable peace settlement while Austria was still in the game.

My gamble payed off. Before long both Brescia and Verona was taken and I had already moved my forces to Venice. Already being 1451 I could now hire more infantry to help the sieging.

Before long Austria had kept Venice to busy to actually be able to stop me moving on Venice. As soon as the siege was over. I settled for Brescia and Verona + 50 gold. After a couple of tries I managed to get it.

The first step to greatness was complete. I won the war against Venice. And I now had no natural enemies.

What followed was a steady flow of diplomatic efforts and Merchant pain. Steadily building up my income and looking at ways to get my next two provinces. With Francesco's great diplomatic skills I managed to get great alliances whit Sicily and Savoy.

8 years of planning culminated into a break when Modena declared war on Mantua. Something I've been planning for and hoping for a long time now. Pays to be patient.

Having warned Modena prior to this. I was glad to learn that I could now declare war without to much of a penalty. Just had to wait until they Annexed Mantua first.

Before events could manage to take their course King Francesco died.
The sad year of 1459.

Reign of Filippo Maria II, 30th of July 1459

Laying the groundwork for an empire to be

Suddenly finding myself whit a new Monarch I baited out Modena. But having access trough their land and Tuscany I would be forced to cancel that before I did anything. Before I could manage to react I found myself called to war. Sicily was becoming more of a hassle than they where good for. Declaring war on Ancona. Having built up my army whit another 4.000 infantry along whit the 6.000 I already had. I quickly moved my main army over there. But Tuscany had beaten us to it and was already sieging. Quickly helping so the siege went quicker I found my way back home. Modena still sieging Mantua I waited the out. As soon as they annexed them. I hit Modena hard and forced em into submission, first canceling access. Sieging every province I quickly forced down the Vassalage on them. Alongside taking Mantua and Farrara for myself.

Obviusly the reputation was an issue, but I had previusly had curia and was feeling good about the hole situation.

Having eyeballed the Genoa Market province. I was looking for a way to hit them. But they being allied whit Venice didn't help at all.

I couldn't manage a two front war now.
Faced whit two allies I now had great relations with. I suddenly figured. I could try to vassal them. Already having Modena as one, I could diplo annex them after a while if I managed it. My Monarch having 8 diplomacy skills I was intrigued to try.

Luck is a strange thing indeed. Playing the vanilla game I didn't think I'd have to much luck whit this. But Both my allies I had royal marriage whit, great relations and they went for vassalage straight away. Luck indeed. Now it was all about keeping them that way.

Now. Having gained two large Vassals. I finally could start to think about how I could manage to unify Italy. I now decided I had enough provinces to attempt such an undertaking. Waiting for the reputation to increase again. I abide my time.

Tuscany was weak now. Only having Siena as allied. I could take them easy I decided. But having great relations I needed to get limit an aggressive war would have. Quickly warning them. Dropping them some. Then insulting them. I found myself belove +100. I was now set. I just needed to wait for the wardec. After waiting a few years. I now saw that they had a disagreement with the papacy. I quickly did what I needed to do. Hiring more infantry. I moved right on top of them. It didn't exactly work out as I hoped. Siena chickened out, (good call tbh) I was then left whit walking over Tuscany. Ancona then Firenze, and last Piza. But stubborn as they where. It took me close to 6 months to create the peace they accept. Vassalage it was none the less, whit Ancona for myself.

Having now 4 vassals. I needed to soon as possible diplo annex them.

Earliest possibility for that was 1476 whit Modena. It now being 1469 I decided I'd possession myself up for that. Building up my reputation again. Trying to get hold of the curia was hard. A couple of times I was lucky and held it for around a year each time. Enough to get it up enough.

I hoped to annex Sicily first. As they had the greatest city and that would help me greatly. Focusing on them and Savoy. I knew nobody would willingly go to war against me. No, I was becoming a power already. Austria was increasingly a worry however. Being the HRE. I couldn't help but wonder what lied next for me if they wared me. Just to be sure. I put effort into becoming allied whit Bavaria. They had grown to a sizable country now. Almost as large as I was. Along with my Vassals Austria wasn't any problem now. I almost hoped they would attack me. Just to make sure France didn't have any ideas, I allied whit Burgundy. At this point. I was sure I could unify Italy.

The Dream that was

Staying out of everything that had to do with colonies and merchants. I focused all my efforts into diplomacy. A great nation comes into existence trough quill and sword alike.

1477, great year for events, for sure.
Our tireless efforts into persuading Sicily to join the greater cause payed off. Savoy, Modena and Tuscany followed suit shortly as soon Sicily saw the light.

Italy wasn't anymore a distant dream. It was close to reality. The church was the greatest hurdle to overcome. They wouldn't willingly hand over Rome. That much was clear. Unsure if I could manage to force them into it. Was another matter entirely.

The situation wasn't good. They had provinces all over the place.
Taking them all would be hard. Genoa and Venice wouldn't be a problem. I could take them both at my current state. Alone if need be.

No, my worries laid in the Papacy. Siena now having aligned themselves whit the papacy I found useful. I could use them to get at the church.

Italy would be unified again. Church or no church. It had to go. Taking over Venice or Genoa had to wait.

Now to set it all up. I would obviously use Siena as the trap for this.
But looking how the Papacy have provinces in Avignon, Utrecht, Trier and Barrois.

Most of the access I needed, I could get from Provance and Burgundy. Now having both the army and the casus belli to actually do it was another thing. But while I was waiting for a boarder dispute I was shocked to learn I now had to take over another three provinces. Wurttemberg, Baden, and Elsass. The church had been busy I see.

Well. Can't be helped. I needed Rome. Not those other provinces.
If I needed to take them. I wasn't going to sit around waiting for them to hand over annexation of Rome. That clearly wasn't going to happen, not being able to arrange royal marriage with the Papacy I'm forced into this approach.

And not only that. I now discover that the Swiss is also in alliance whit them.
Not having lost a war so far. I wasn't about to lose another one. Beside. I had the army to do it. Now I had several armies whit 1.000 knights, 4.000 or 5.000 infantry each. On total I would say I have 4-5 of these at any given time. One in Naples, One in Verona, One in Firenze and then One in Lombardi. Depending on if I'm going to war or not I have one in reserve.

When the event came. A few years later. I leaped into action. By decing Siena I avoided the entire Swiss problem. Letting Burgundy take Utrecht, Trier and Barrois. I took Siena right away, annexing them. Moving on Rome and taking Avignon more or less straight after that. Bavaria taking Wuttemberg, and Baden before I could move my army up there. And I took Elsass for last. Not bothering whit anything but Vassalage for Peace offer. Rome accepted right away. Right after that I allied whit them as they now where alone and all to willing to do so.

The king is dead. Long live the... Council???
Under Filippo Maria, Milan had now grown to be a strong Lombardi country. Building up from 4 provinces to around 19 provinces. It would give me the manpower and the leverage to take make Italy happen.

Regency Council , 16th of October 1482

Leaving to sort out the peace. I focused my efforts on building the country and my keeping my vassals happy.

Already having Smithsonian National Idea. As quickly as I got the second Idea I chose the inflation one. I found it to be a lifesaver. Having struggled with high inflation rates of 0.2-0.3 each year. I was forced to adapt a more inflation friendly attitude towards my army. Stripping the reserve army. I could always hire more if I needed it. I had the income to do it. It was by far more important to keep the inflation down at this current time. Having it already at 5.3 I couldn't continue down this road for much longer.

Only having Bavaria attack Bohemia under this reign I abide my time and build myself up for the push for Italian Unification. I only had to wait for Papacy to become +200 and 10 years to pass before I could attempt to get Rome and Unify the Country into it's rightful Name.

Massimiliano I, 22th of April 1488

Getting around 40 gold a year I was looking forward to get core provinces in Naples and Firenze. That would surely boost my income a great deal. Around this time I just had core provinces in Bresia and Verona and that boosted me whit a massive 8 gold at the time. Already having core in Modena I got that one straight away from annex. Another reason for why I wanted to wait for a boarder dispute event against Rome.

Slowly and steadily building up my economy focusing on production instead of trade, I gained a sizable income, which I spend on building several workshops. Something that would be a onetime investment that I could reap the rewards form continuously as I went.

At this point I saw Romanga having a slight revolt risk I decided to support that. Sending a spy there to support the effort. Doing this to my own vassal just indicate how much I wanted to secure Italy. Being a core province from the boarder dispute, I just leaned back and let the event unfold. It wasn't long before the province was in uproar. After a couple of years whit the province being inactive. It joined my cause. From out of nowhere. I was hoping they would split whit papacy so I could just dec them and get it all over whit. But this was even better.

Year 1490. The king of Austria died. Having both Bavaria, and Burgundy as electors and at +190. I found myself in the chair of the Holy Roman Empire. Unexpected to say the least. I didn't plan for this at all. But a turn of events to the better. I now felt even more strongly about my position.

Slowly getting fed up of constant wars against Bohemia, I finally decided that this was it when the 4th war came. A country was going to die for sure. Moving 3/4th of my army up there. Instead of letting Bavaria handle it whit a bit of support from my knights. I now made sure Bavaria laid the first siege on their cities. I then filled it up whit infantry and slowly and steadily we took the cities over.

Though Massimiliano's reign was short and ended surprisingly. More than anything his reign probably saw events that was needed to create Italy, although I didn't know it yet.

Sforza Maria I , 21th of March 1492

Gaining the throne in the middle of this war. I still had control of the HRE. The war was in reality all but over. Bavaria forcing on them a favorable peace. Leaving us whit Erfurth, a province that Bavaria have rejected to take over at all, annoying me greatly. Taken just about all of Bohemia's provinces, accept the capitol Bohemia and Erfurth. Bavaria was now nearly as strong as me. And I now had a great allied in my quest for Italy.

Austria took over Bohemia a few years later. And that was the end of that problem.

Being left whit Erfurth was a problem though. I didn't have any provinces anywhere close to it. I was left in the mist on what to do about it. I tried to sell it to Bavaria but they wasn't interested at all. After a few months of deliberation on what to do about it. I finally decided to release them.

A stroke of genius in the making. Having quickly vassaled it to Saxony I allied whit it. Little did I know that this was going to become the reason why I could make an empire later on. For all your planning, it's sometime the most minute events that can have a great impact on your realm. You don't understand whats so great about it. But they went straight into the electors chair of HRE along whit my own country. I now had complete control of the HRE. Because of my positive standings and alliance whit them all. I was now in reality a superpower. Much without knowing it.

When a boarder dispute event finally came. Already having one against Liguria I now was wondering how to go about with this. I was all focused on the Italian cause, I hadn't really focused to much on Genoa and Venice. I could use this for my advantage as always though. Venice already having taken Corsica from Genoa in an earlier war. I was now inclined to really go after them. I Venice having lost most of their ships in a second war against Austria, and not long before that against Crimea. Them only having a very few provinces left. I now saw an opportunity to take them. Looking as my reputation was back to honorable. I could really get going.

Quickly building up my fleet to carry much more men. I hoped that the minute fleet I already had could keep the Venician fleet busy in the gulf of Venice. When the time came. So I could move my men to Crete, Corfu and Corsica. Whit my transports.

Already having secured access trough Austria for the Bohemian wars. I now felt very secure I could take Venice. Venice only had support from Ragusa. And they had a war against Crimea still.

What had been 20 years of slow growth province wise. Was about to culminate into new events.

Ones the transport where being built I moved all my men into position.

Having got a large sum of money at the turn of the last two years. Having cores in Naples, Firenze and those other provinces I annexed, made a huge difference in my income each year. Which was up to 50 gold at this stage. I could build myself 6 transports. Enough to transport a sizable fleet over the seas.

Not the Spanish armada by any standard but enough to get the job done.

As soon as they where build I moved into action. Declared war against them, Moved 3.000 troops to Corfu and Corsica first. Then moved my main army into Venice. Quickly taking that over. Then when the armies where in place in Corfu and Corsica, I moved my transport to Calabria and from there loaded my new infantry up to go to Crete. Quickly taking my main army from Venice to Istria leaving only 1.000 knights as guards. After sieging Crete and Istria for a few months it fell quickly. Only Corfu and Corsica took longer. But it was all a foregone conclution. Ones they fell. I took all but Venice and forced them into Vassalage. However. It took me two years to force them into it. And it was by no account an easy event. Although it might sound like it. Although the events might sound easy to do. The hardest part is often to force them into accepting the peace.

Watching the situation whit Genoa was now more interesting. They had lost a province in Crimea, and was left whit only one. And, best of all. They where at war again whit Crimea.

I suddenly saw a new opportunity. Getting a marketplace province directly. Again having boarder dispute against Genoa made this a lot easier.

The real problem was to increase the reputation and the stability back up.

While I baited Crimea out. I was just holding and waiting until they had taken over entire Crimea peninsula. Ones they made peace. I sticked em hard.
Taking the province with nearly everything I had. Taking it over in a short time. Leaving me to annex them straight away. But again, baiting out Crimea took a couple of years. However. I now had complete control of the entire Italian peninsula. And got a marketplace. Milan was going places!

Italy. Was within my grasp. Slowly getting Papacy up to +200 and building alliance whit Venice was now on the agenda. Just holding on and waiting to annex Rome.

Now focusing on getting my Reputation up again. I was severely hit by the Venice and Genoa events. Annexing Papacy surely would hit me hard. No, I needed it way up to get Italy. So it was only one way to go. There would be no Italy without Rome.

Liege tried to assault us. But papacy only took Gelre from them.

Under Sforza's reign, Milan created the economic power it needed to take on it's next objective. Now that the Italian peninsula was secured. Gaining a new Idea that took focus onto Diplomacy and Science. I choice the science reduction Idea. Gaining Curia in this Reign I never lost it again. I still have it a 100 year later.

Regency Council, 14th of August 1503

The king dies. But I keep on building up my realm. Focusing on science mostly while keeping my Army at a decent level.

Gian Galeazzo II, 6th of Desember 1503

Long Live the King.
Focusing everything on annexing Papacy. However. The Ottomans where forced to release Croatia just month before Gian became ruler. Between that and Liege having strained my relationship with Burgundy and Saxony. I no longer had control of HRE. I was determined to get it back though.

Shortly after this screen.
I managed to annex Rome.
I was extatic.
Finally! There was nothing between us and Italy no more. Gaining Avignon, Trier and those other German states.

I thought it was plain sailing from here.
Man was I wrong.

Getting spammed straight away whit free Papacy events. Annoying as hell. But it reduced my badboys. But having core in Rome I wasn't about to let it go anytime soon. Instead I built up my country now. I released Netherlands as Vassal and allied whit them as soon as I could. (the release papacy event is bugged. But I feel vindicated for using it more, I'll explain later. But I changed it to spawn every 16 months instead of every (2 months <- thats ridiculous))

The King of Hungary died at 1508, Leaving me with the provinces of Szolnok and Mazovia. Both far away from my own realm. I quickly released Mazovia as a Vassal. But unsure if I wanted to spawn Hungary again or not. I decided to keep it for now. Maybe use it against the ottomans.

Looking at the Ottomans now. I wondered if I could take them on. I had the income for it. But I needed HRE for the manpower and the army. Getting stuck whit 20k manpower I didn't think where enough to take them. No I needed to wait for HRE again. Building up relations whit my vassals and my allies I soon where next in line for HRE.

Croatia just needed to die first.

I was annoyed beyond words when Liege attacked Burgundy. Why on earth would any country do that? Attacking such a strong enemy. They where doomed from the start. This put every effort I was making against the Ottomans up in arms.

Moving my army up there to quickly subdue them. I settled peace as soon as they offered it.

Giving Venice, Freisland in the process. Leaving a small army up in Trier. The Ottoman Empire was now at war whit Croatia. It all happened so fast now. Quickly moving close to everyone down from Burgundy and Liege. I needed to get into possession. Using much of my large income that was now over 100 gold every year. Having built up my fleet from 1500ed I had created a large navy. Whit close to 10 transports and 20 war vessels. 4 of which was Carraks. Building 20.000 men in two bulks. Of which was nearly 10.000 knights. Knights I would need to stand against the Ottoman's massive army.
I sorted the Knights into two bulks of 5.000 quick movers. Each with their own general. And the infantry for themselves. Before I could manage to set things in motion I annexed Venice. Entire Italy was now fully my own provinces. Having core on Venice. I was quickly hit whit a massive boost in income.

Now having a close to 50.000 strong army against the infidels. I was ready to go.

Surprise hit me when I realized I could vassal Bavaria. Not even considering it earlier I was shocked to realize that they even accepted. Having a strong grip on the HRE now was a massive bonus.

Croatia fell soon.
I had ones again HRE, and it's manpower under my wings. Ottomans was in for a tough ride for sure.

I now had 40.000 men in reserve. But only a little money. I needed to wait until near year before I hit.

New Year came and money was in my treasury. a massive 150 gold.

Already having Casus Belli from Croatia province. I was all set. Just a few more months to get my ships into possession and the army loaded. Ones they where on board. I let it all louse.

Moving my knights to quickly cut off supplies of men whit holding down Serbia, Zeta and Bulgaria. My infantry along whit a few knights whit them slowly but steadily took each province in Hungary and Greece. Making sure I didn't get surprised behind I took care of the Ottoman Navy. I was by far stronger than them there. And soon found myself in control of the seas.

Making sure to always attack heavily outnumbering them. I wasn't going to let this end by chance. Piling on whit infantry as the years went by. Tiring out my own country. But I was bringing the ottomans to the brink of collapse. Forcing them into a selected few provinces. I even took control of Thrace. Hitting war tax as soon as it happened I got close to 250 gold ever year. Helping me greatly in the war effort.

Forcing them to a positive peace where I could get provinces was hard though. They didn't want to give up at all. Only giving in on rights to lands I didn't want anyway. After three years and an exhausted manpool. I was forced to limit my expanse. Taking only Sopron, Pech, Slovenia, Croatia and Dalmatia.

I was pleased though, even though I didn't get all the Hungarian provinces I wanted. But was horrified to see that my reputation had crashed and burned?
What in the name of all things holy?? I win a huge war against the Ottomans and I lose reputation? No way, this can't be happening. At this stage. I decide to keep the Papal event. Before this point I've only let it run and decrease my prestige. As I already had a great reputation I never really gained anything from it. But now. This was horrid. So I chose to keep it. Leaving it to run at 16 months intervals.

Letting events take it course I focused on building my nation again.
I didn't need this many troops anymore. So I dispanded much of my army. Leaving it whit around 15.000 men and 10.000 knight. Along whit around 3.000 cannons which I've recruited during the war to speed up sieging.

At this point I'm looking at joining up my entire realm. Taking these Hungarian provinces made me realize it was doable. I needed to take on two countries for that. Austria and Switzerland.

Mainz had alliance whit Switzerland. So focusing on Switzerland was natural.
Quickly arranging for war against them I took Bern and Schwyz quickly. Along whit Mainz. I accepted peace whit Switzerland not thinking I could annex Mainz. But at this point I had 15 reputation points and I wasn't about to waste my luck now. So I settled for Schwyz.

Austria had to wait. As I already had access trough there, I could move easily enough and it could wait for now.

An empire needs a colony program. I steadily building up in three colonies in upper todays Colombia.

The reign of Gian was a massive one. Growing the nation greatly.
Creating Italy shouldn't be to far off. Clearly an Empire in the making.
Controlling both HRE and Curia. From Gian's Reign, Our nation wouldn't lose it.

Matteo III, 7th of June 1527

A reign that would see our nation into the history books.

*to be continued*

Apparently I can't create more screens in this post. So I'm forced to make a new one. I'll continue there.

*pay attention in the next post*

So you need to conquer the whole country to get the crown? I thought it would be more like Crusader Kings and you'd only have to get a large percentage of them. Anyway, good story so far.

Milan is a fun country to play!

Man, you've covered more years in one update than I've gotten through in 5 pages! :D

This will be interesting to watch! You're off to a great start.

Rensslaer

Impressive accomplishments so far.:) Time to recreate the true Roman Empire!

Matteo III, 7th of June 1527

A new Empire on the horizon.

Focusing my efforts again on the building of the realm. I was glad to see my years focused on the ottomans. Been fruitful and I completely forgot that I soon would get a new National Idea.

As soon as I got it. I chose Deus Volt.

With one mind and one mind only for it's use.
To take back Thrace.
This would take the larger part of 50 years to accomplish.
But it would be 50 years of insane growth. And the creation of a massive empire.

While focusing on potential ways to take on the ottomans.
I soon found myself completing my initial goal.

ITALY

Achievement! First King of Italy.

Quickly moving on the events. I now realized I had a good chance to annex Bavaria to.

I had my empire.
My huge empire was now even more huge.
I had a massive control of the middle empire.
HRE was firmly under my control.
Same was Curia. Having 5 out of 7 cardinals. I wasn't going to lose it anytime soon.

Now gaining close to 200 gold every year. My techs where increased massively. Moving a Knight army into Bavaria to secure control. Steadily building up my colonies in the Americas. I limit it to Manhattan and the Carribean.

A massive reputation boom was limiting me for going against Ottomans at this time.

But as soon as I had it under 7 I moved on them. Again using the same tactic as before. Building up my army to another 10.000-15.000 men. Only a few Knights. As I've kept the ones I had from earlier.

Got them all ready and moved them into place before the assault. Getting military access trough Transilvania. Making sure to cut off the troops in upper Hungary from the main region.

Also dropping a many of my men into Anatolia and Asia Minor. Taking over Karnten and annexing them. Moving knights into Serbia and Bulgaria. Effectively cutting the armies in two again. Taking over Thrace and the other European provinces. Forcing on them a peace and taking Zeta, Hum, Bosnia, Ersekujvar, Partium, Carpathia, Benat, and Serbia. Totally decimating them in the process.

Now having such a massive income I saved up for a few years. And spent it building on several factories. And city improvements. My income sored massively. Now close to 300 gold ever year.

Only problem I had weak allies. But that didn't matter to much. I only hoped someone would be as bold to attack me so I could be saved the hassle. But having Royal Marriage whit just about everyone it wasn't likely.

Having to wait months for income I started focusing more on colonies.
Building, Jamaica, Cuba all up into cities.

Steadily doing the tech level up. Gaining on France and Burgundy on the Land level. Also being leading on the Governmental one. Greatly focusing on my land level tech. Being so far behind Burgundy I needed to do something about that.

Spending effort on that, I was speeding towards gaining on them.

My reputation was another matter entirely.
I was up to 12 and letting time pass to have it decrease as much as I could.
Taking forever to get it down I took it with strides and just focused on building my great realm.

Austria being a royal pain. I decided I would have to do something about that.
Having Casus Belli from way back I just needed a timing for it.

But I decided to wait a bit. And rather try to get hold of Thrace.
I spent a huge amount on Missionaries at this stage. Trying to convert as much of the non catholic provinces. (slow progress this is but I'm getting there)

The reign of Matteo saw the gain of 35 provinces.
A massive amount of new wealth.
Creation of Italy.
Surely my greatest Monarch to live.
The king is dead, Long live the King!

Ferdinando I, 26th of April 1553

Now eyeballing Switzerland I quickly took them over. Having good control of every aspect of my situation now.

Before I could settle whit my new Monarch

I was called into war against France.
Out of the blue.
They being Land tech lv 10 having a great advantage against me.
Having only Land tech lv 9 I was forced into taking huge investment to bridge the gap. And putting more or less the other techs on hold giving them much less to work whit.

Having much of my army in Hungary. I hired a huge amount of infantry and knights straight away.

While I moved my armies over my large country I baited the French army into my area.

Gaining Provance I could quickly make peace whit them and force them to realize Brittany as vassal. I dunno why France attacked me. They had so few on the boarder. I think they just came out from a war whit Aragon and Portugal. But lucky for me. The ones that invaded only where a few. And I quickly took over them.

Managing to get deep into France trough my Burgundy access. I found my problem was actually more to get a favorable peace whit France. They are stubborn bunch indeed. in the end. I was forced to accept Dauphine only. However. I initially wanted much more. But that was impossible to get. And I settled for gaining access to Avignon. At least I managed to hold my empire in one. That could have been a messy situation.

Shortly after I manage to complete Land lv 10.
Ha, where was that when I needed it?
Ah well. To late to cry over spilled milk.

Now that I had my entire army up here. I could just as well go for Austria.
Cutting military access from them both ways. I carefully positioned my men in order to take them correctly.

But this took longer than expected. I spent years to get my reputation up to manage to get to a state where I could attack again. Austria having A very large country, it wasn't as bulky as you'd expect. It was very vertical. As I controlled both sides of it. Only way it could grow was North. So much of their provinces was up that way.

Wasting no time ones I got my reputation to 4. I hit them hard. Again whit mobile armies of knights. Along whit my new and improved infantry. Taking over the south was fairly easy. Forcing them into a favorable peace quickly was easy. Ones I had Wien it was all forgone.

Now having connected my empire I was free to take on the ottomans again.
Boosted by my income I didn't dispand much of my army this time. Instead I used it to take on the Ottomans again.

Moving everything into position yet again I moved quickly. This time it was no effort. I had full control on them at all times. And even better. Crimea and Persia was already at war whit them. It was now much more a question of cutting off Crimea and Persia before they could gain Thrace.
Successfully cutting off Crimea and Persia I focused on gaining Greece. Having a hard time taking over Janina and Salonica. I waited out Crimea and Persia to make peace first. Taking everything to Angora. I forced my peace on them. But didn't Vassal em. As I would annex the as soon as humanly possible.

Waiting the 5 years for the peace to end. I quickly moved on them as soon as it was gone.

Gaining Thrace.
Constantinople was ours.
Now we could surely call ourself an Empire.
Gaining Constantinople back on Roman hands was just right. Some 100 years after they first lost it to the Ottomans.

Wasting no time. I didn't sit around. Moving straight away. I arranged my armies around Austria again. Taking every province. I forced on them a peace again and took all but a few provinces. Leaving Wien, Ruppin, Brandenburg and Neumark.

I was annoyed that I couldn't manage to get it all. It couldn't be helped. As they refused again and again. I would just have to wait my time.

Before I could prevent it. Lithuania gained Austria trough Succession.
Leaving them with Wien right in the middle of my land. And I wasn't about to attack them anytime soon. Having Royal Marriage and all. No way I was going to attack them now also with my massive reputation points. 18 at this point. I needed to get it way down before I did anything.

At this stage. There is only my Vassals and Macklenburg, Burgundy, Hamburg, Lithuania and Provance left in the HRE.

Since I had earlier tried to vassal Macklenburg. But to no luck. I now found myself in the same possibility. And I went for it. I had good enough control of the HRE so I could afford to lose a supporter if it went bad. They have just successfully taken over Denmark and parts of lower Sweden.

Managing to Vassal them would be a great step forward. If I managed that I could annex both Netherlands and Saxony and still have control of the HRE.

I decided to go for it. Again unsuccessful I was determined to have them before long. and used nearly all my diplomats against them, to get them up again. Money at this stage is no problem as I get a massive 700 gold each year. Gaining Tax collector and Constable greatly increased my income along whit gaining Thrace and Andalusia.

Finally gaining Macklenburg after a few years. I now decided I could take the hit from the diplo annex on my reputation. It was now down to around 14.
After annexing both vassals I now where left whit 20 reputation points.

I wasn't about to go to war anytime soon.

The reign of Ferdinando saw the hostile taking of 46!!! provinces along whit colonies. Not since the reign of Charlemagne had any HRE taken such a massive size of land. But more importantly gaining the lost Capitol of the East Roman Empire.

But it wasn't a fluke or luck.
We've fought hard and long to get to this stage.
Defending every province to the last man.
The last 50 years. Have seen the gain of 81 provinces.

The King is dead. Long live the King.

Ercole I, 4th of February 1575

As my new Monarch settled in I started focusing more on colonization and turning my new subjects into catholics. A few states in the newly annexed Saxony and my entire south western part of my empire was filled whit orthodox and muslim provinces. And as soon as I could. I tried to convert them. My massive income could easily handle my new massive convertion program. Rather the problem was the time it takes and the lack of missionaries.

As soon as I could I got hold of a statesman who could supply me whit more missionaries. Although it wasn't a problem to convert the smaller populated provinces, I felt I needed to convert as soon as possible the large province of Thrace. Now almost to the rim whit so many people I almost couldn't wait until I had a core province there. Having to wait another 20 years for it wasn't to bad. My focus now was to convert it. Averaging between 45% to 60% chance of success was a problem. I just hoped my 900 gold investment to convert Thrace would pay off quickly because it would be a massive strain on my economy to try over and over again at that huge investment.
Having already failed ones in Anatolia, I just hoped it wouldn't take as long whit Thrace. I could afford 300 gold for Anatolia easy. But not that often for Thrace.

Death of another king. Although I didn't do much under this reign. I mostly focused on building it up and having the bb drop.

Cesare I, 17th of July 1581

Continuing as I have. And focused more and more on Colonies and Missionaries, I was rather shocked when Wallacia suddenly out of the blue declared war on me. Not bothering to put any troops on the Wallacian boarder or the Lithuanian border. I was not forced into a war whit Lithuania. A war I didn't really want.

My bad boys having dropped considerably, I decided I could afford to gain a few provinces. And I could get Wien and the old Austria provinces now.

As soon as I could I moved almost 90% of my men from my French and Persian boarder up into Wallacia and Lithuania. Moving whit Macklenburg. We soon took over much of the Lithuanian boarder provinces. Almost up to Lithuania itself. Haven taken over Wallacia's two provinces, I settled peace whit them.

Leaving only Lithuania to fight a war they didn't start. But I didn't care. I wanted the Austrian provinces. So I pushed on to Lithuania. Only when I had that. I could settle for a favorable peace.

Settling for Wien, Ruppin, Brandenburg, Neumark, Vorpommern and Transylvania. Macklenburg had settled peace on it's own earlier and had collected a province in the Baltics.

Federigo III, 15th of October 1586

With my new completed realm.
Spending nearly all my time building new ships, sending colonists, arranging convertion. I was all to happy to let things take it's course. I wanted my reputation back up to a decent level.

I now had only Wallacia left in the middle of my huge land. I would have to wait whit that for a while. I didn't want a new war whit Lithuania anytime soon.

I needed her for HRE if I ever was to control it when I annexed Macklenburg. After a few years with massive diplomatic efforts I was back where I needed to be in the HRE succession order.

Left with focusing on my own colonization I was all to happy to decrease my BB again. Having taken only a few provinces and not as many as I could have. I was now in a good position to lower it even further, from now being at 10 I felt even better.

My main goal was to annex Macklenburg now. But I needed to get down to a lever where I could do it. All these wars just made that so much harder to get down where I needed to be to take the massive 22 bb hit I would gain for it. :(

If I did it now. Something I could actually do. I would be left in massive wars with all my neighbors.

Inflation was also starting to become a problem. Even though my massive income could handle it for now. I made sure to lose money to get it at 0.0 inflation again. I just needed my tech level up so I could start getting it down again. But that was still a long way off.

A new focus came into my head.
If I was going to keep HRE I needed to take out a few hostile electors. Either Hamburg or Provance. I also wanted the large province of Lyonnais with over 150k population. Being unsuccessful in the last war against France to take Champagne and Lyonnais, I was up for a rematch.

France had for the last 10 years been in constant war. Either against Burgundy, Castille, Aragon or Portugal. Although their massive amount of knights was a worry to me. I felt I could plan for it enough to take them on. Quickly cut behind them deep and take most of their provinces, so I could force on them a peace.

Taking Ill du France is always a challenge. But I felt I had a few openings to do it. Using my access trough Burgundy I could cut deep into france pretty quickly. And avoid a stalemate on the boarder provinces. While doing this I baited them to siege into my own land so I spread out the forces. I had enough manpower. I just needed to get away from fighting them uphill and across waters. Sometimes manpower isn't everything. You need to fight smart.

Having build up my force. I now had 120k men on the boarder to France. Of them 40k was knights. As soon as I hit the war button I set everything in motion. Just ignoring the provinces where their forces was centered and pushed deep into the mainland to lay the sieges. Taking Calais almost straight away. Auvergne was still a vassal of France. I focused much on them to annex them. Ones I had the siege completed I hit the annex button. I have now completed a minor objective from the start of the war. So I could focus all my men on forcing France into giving up the provinces I wanted. Having 10-12 armies and still a very full manpower. Not dipping below 80k the entire war. I realized I could probably take on any power and fight a two or even three front war. Haven made sure I could defend Asia minor while I fought in France. I just needed to abide my time and decimate France into submission.

Failing to realize that Provance had just not the one province. I was rather upset to realize I couldn't annex them straight away. Quickly capitolaising on the event I chose to take the Azores and then force on the peace. Orleanais having owned Calais, and me having just taken the capitol. I forced on them our peace. And I took Calais. Bourbon I chose to vassal. I was hoping to take Nevers from a peace agreement with France. So I could have a good control of the area.

France at this point only held on to Champagne, and haven't taken my bait of going into my German provinces. They had a massive force left there. Including 7.000 knights, 8.000 infantry and 2.000 cannons. Lead by a well stat General. Forcing me to attack across a river, uphill and against a well defended army. I was not happy about the situation. Lyonnais wasn't as much of a problem as they only had left 2.000 knights after depleting their army to defend their provinces. And I could easily take my men I had close. To force them out of the province and I was left to siege it.

Champagne was still a problem. That was the province I wanted that I still haven taken over. And I wasn't about to force on them the peace without taking champagne. I took every knight I had around. And a sizable force of infantry and cannons. And just went for it. 20k knight and 15k infantry and 4k cannons forced it's way into champagne. Constantly suppling them with more and more men and knights. I finally managed to drive them out of the province and leaving me to siege the city.

Aragon saw the events unfolding and declared war on France to while I was fighting in champagne. I already had Languedoc in my hands and wasn't to worried about it. As I was about to control the provinces I wanted anyway.

Nice start. And a lot accomplished. Well played.

Looks like your most of the way to unification. Good start.

When I finally managed to take champagne. I tried to force on them the peace. Trying to take provinces of the value of 200. But they didn't want any of that. I now had to find the right combination to give me all the provinces I wanted. I quickly realized I couldn't get every province I wanted.

Left with the choice to continue fighting. I decided I should quit while I was ahead before I was well over my head with this. Taking Lyonnais, Languedoc, Lothringen and Champagne.

Again my reputation sank to the floor.
Again up to 14. I felt I needed to stick to my gun if I ever was suppose to annex Macklenburg. Who, btw wasn't at all happy with me waring against France.

So I settled back into a normal situation again. Building up my fleet again. And building many more factories in the provinces I could manage to find the right supply.

My income having raised to a massive 1200gold each year I could almost afford a new factory every year. Also having access to marketplace now. I started a new massive building program. Also gaining fortress lv 3. I needed huge investments in building them to. Still focusing much of my effort on missionaries and colonists. Anatolia stubbornly refusing to convert again and again.

Another reign closed to an end. I felt I could have done more in the 15 years he had reign. So I felt rather disappointed about it. But I managed to get my reputation well on my way to there I needed it to be. And thats what have been limiting me at this point.

Filippo I, 24th of September 1601

Another king, another attempt to get my reputation up to a level where I can annex Macklenburg. Still focusing on my colonization I steadily built up my provinces over there to city stage. Gaining a much larger income while doing it.

A short reign this was and not much happened. I focused entirely on keeping the peace.

Ranuccio I, 8th of September 1603

Getting a new Monarch who could gibe me a decent diplomatic skill lv. I chose to annex Macklenburg as soon as possible. I was getting tired of waiting. I had already waited 30 years to do this.

I felt I was now in a new stalemate. And I needed out of it quick.
As soon as I got me reputation below 7 I hit the try to annex option. Luckily my stability was fairly high and theirs was at -2. and their monarch wasn't as good as mine. Along whit having a +200 relations, I was still a but worried they might turn it down. You never know after all. No surprise to me when they turned it down. Quickly I tried to get it above 190 again. And tried again. Much better luck this time. I managed to annex them. A huge objection was completed.

Feeling the momentum gaining again. I was shocked to learn my reputation was now at 30!!! I knew it would be severe. But damn.

Right.. Now what.
Well. having planned ahead for after the annex. I claimed the thrones on both Sicily and Burgundy. Both of which I had royal marriage with.

Both being upset. And both being upset when I annexed Macklenburg. I was now deep in the s***s. And not happy at all about the situation I now faced.

Unluckily for me.
Hamburg wared me now. Isn't that typical.

Well. I wanted them out of the way anyway. So I just took over the one province country and annexed them.

Hahaha. Now at a decimal 35.75 bb of a possible 36. I wasn't happy when. Sicily declared on me.

Obviously the BB wars had hit me. And I was wondering why that was. I was still below the legal limit.

Aragon had joined the war whit Sicily. But I wasn't panicing yet.
Trying to force them to a white peace was my objective at this stage. Before everything went even more to sh**s.

I could still control my boarder provinces so I was fairly safe. And I still had a very good relation with Lithuania. Who btw had a - stability so they couldn't declare on me anyway.

I moved my fleet to the sea of napoli. Also moving a knight army to Calabria to stop them crossing the straight.

Getting there before they managed to do that. I was now in a much stronger position. Already holding Languedoc tight. They wasn't about to cross into there. Now that I had locked it all down. I took some of my infantry army onboard my fleet and moved them to Palermo. Ones I sieged that I forced more in. Sicily only focusing on holding down Messina so I couldn't cross the straight. I didn't mind that one bit.

Unluckily for me. Burgundy also saw their cut to wardec me.
Hahaha. No. I wasn't about to give up yet. I had large forces there to keep France off my back. I quickly ordered everyone into Burgundy. Sieging almost their entire boarder. They had only a few centralized armies. One being in Burgundy itself. But with only 5.000 knights I walked all over that army and quickly sieged the capitol.

As soon as I had Palermo. I settled peace with Sicily. Not bothering to take anything. I just wanted the war whit them over so I could focus more on Burgundy who I wasn't about to let get away to easily whit backstabbing me.

Unluckily for me, Aragon was the leader of the alliance. I hadn't realized this at the time. Forcing me to siege one of their provinces in americas.
Then settle for white peace.

Finally being able to focus on Burgundy the war was all but over.
Leaving me just to Vassal them.

Ha. It was over as soon as it started.
But I quickly realized this wasn't the BB wars hitting me. But them resisting me claiming their thrones.

Oh well. I got away whit the scare there.
I realized now I that I needed allies. Trying at first to gain England. I instead just allied with my vassal.

Burgundy was still at a decent level. And I could use their armies. Spending all my diplomats on gaining a better relation.

HRE now looked much more secure. As I had Burgundy in my hands and under my control.

Along with having total control of the Curia. I could now again focus every effort on decreasing my badboys.

My reputation wasn't all that bad. But I obviously needed it much lower.

But I was just happy I got out of that situation on top. And I had a new Vassal to play whit.

Again trying to keep my realm in one and growing alongside with keeping my vassals happy took all my time and effort.

But again events surprised me. Sicily went to war with me again. I was really puzzled by this. But it gave me the excuse I needed to vassal them. Only bad part was that Castille was in on the fun this time. They had apparently switched allies. And Castille was a lot stronger than Aragon.

Why not the whole Mediterranean? A New Roman Empire needs north africa, egypt, the holy land (since you have Deus Vult it is only right) and so forth.

Not only that. But Castile was now the leader of the alliance.
But again. I was sure I could handle Castile to. So I just let them take Manhatten, from me.

I moved down 7.000 knights and around 15.000 infantry to south Italy where I could safely ferry them over to Sicily. Sicily ones again just stuck their army in Messina. So I just ferried them yet again into Palermo.

Before I had Palermo under control. I had yet another war declaration.

France. Now that I could understand. They had lost a lot of land to me. But I decided I wasn't going to let them get off easy. I was getting sick of them right about now.

Not having moved much of my armies down south to Italy. I had most of my armies still around France.

I hit them straight away. Also building another 20k new infantry.

Now. I was puzzled how I should go about doing this.
France had 4 vassals left. They included, Orleanais, Armagnac, Foix and Provance.

Now. I wasn't about to let Provance get out of this unaligned, if I decided to Vassal France. So I needed to make peace with them first. Problem was, they had a province deep into Castile territory. That was a real problem. So I decided I should ferry some of my army over there and just march trough Anatolia and into that province. However I needed that army free before I could do that. So ones I had Palermo in my hands. I marched it all over to Messina. Where 4.000 knights and 9.000 Sicilian infantry was waiting for me.

Ones I had the 7.000knights and 15.000 infantry locked into them. I moved an another army across the straight to join up with my already committed army.

The battle was long and hard. And took me nearly 1 month to win it.

In the meantime I had moved all my armies into France and it's Vassals.
First taking Provance, then moving on to Orleanais who by the time from the last war had taken over the Brittany province of Anjon. Brittany who I forced to be released from Provance in an earlier war. To be honest I was glad they had done that. Brittany was constantly annoying me on the markets. And I was always getting out competed by them. So I was happy they did that. Bourbon had already laid siege to Orleanais so I just moved my army to join it. After that was completed I moved them to Anjon and sieged that. France had been limited by so many wars. And they where forced to keep Burgundy out in the north. Leaving me to roam free in the south of the land. Where they had very little men left. to defend it against me. So I quickly overran them. Moving much of my Knight armies into Toulouse where 90% of their army in the south resided. Having taken that province with force and forced them out towards Gascogne and the sea. Opening up Foix and Armagnac to my own armies. I realized quickly that if I vassaled France. I needed to Vassal these two to.

Provance I could Vassal, along with Orleans. But I couldn't have so many Vassals. If I took Sicily, France, Provance and Orleans I'd still have 7 vassals. Having another two was going to be stretching it to far.
So I was either forced to let them go. Or to annex them.

I chose the later.
So to not waste any time with that. I moved my 15.000 men into foix to lay siege.

In the meantime I moved 12.000 men and cannons into Othe. Leaving Burgundy to take Nevers. As soon as Bourbon took Orleanais, they moved on to Ile de France. Which was open and they had just to lay the siege.

At this stage I've completed the siege of Messina. And I forced on the vassalage for Sicily. Leaving me free to move my army into Castile.

Trying to gain a white peace with Castile was not easy. They had taken Manhatten from me. And they wanted it badly. So they refused all my attempts of peace. Ah well. It wasn't to be helped so I ferried some of my men from Italy to Africa and laid siege to Tunis. I quickly found out. That I wanted their colony in Caribbean St.Thomas.

Ones I had Foix taken. I forced the Annex on them. Hitting me hard with bb's yet again. I was starting to wonder if I could manage to take Armagnac to. But I didn't wait around and I marched on. And laid siege to that to.

Every increasingly moving my men deeper into France. I soon had Anjon taken and I could force the vassalage on Orleans.

Leaving only France and Provance to be Vassaled and Armagnac to be annexed. And ones the army was in place in Iberia I moved it to siege the provance province, the army I've moved from Sicily siege to be ferried over to Iberia to siege the Provance province in there. God knows how they got hold if it. But I needed it to vassal them, so yet again I had no choice.

France at this stage had little to no resistance to give me. So I just abided my time and did what I needed to do to secure the vassalage.

As soon as I took the Iberian province of Provance I settled peace. And vassalage them. Another annoying problem was solved.

Not long after I had taken enough provinces from Castile to settle peace and gain St.Thomas. I wasn't at all happy how much of a fight they had given me. Any future wars against them wasn't going to be a walk in the park.

Now I only needed to wait until I had Armagnac and I would force the peace on France.

And I didn't have to wait long. A month later it fell. And I moved in to annex them. Yet again hitting me hard on the reputation part. But I wasn't about to let them go. And I could hardly have any more Vassals. If I did. I would never get my existing ones along with France up to a positive stage where I could annex them trough diplomatic efforts.

France didn't stand much longer either. I just had to take a few more provinces and I could try for the first time to vassal them.

And they went for it straight away.

My entire objective was completed again. I hadn't settled for anything less than I started the war out with. But the constant problem of keeping my reputation in check is what always is keeping me back.

But I had nearly taken the entire continent of western Europe. Just lacking Wallacia and a small province inside France. That was the property of Aragon.

The ex French province I spammed heavily with spies. But it just doesn't want to switch sides. And I think I'll have to do something about that. But for now. My greatest problem is my reputation.

So lets see where the future leads me. ;)

I enjoyed reading the AAR. I did something similar with Milan as my first game. (Though I ended up taking folks as vassals instead of taking land myself... a lot of fun growing allies =))

Something I might suggest however is typing in a word processor, you had a few grammatical/spelling errors which do not detract from your story so much as just make it a little harder to read.

Whit - With, may just be an irritation on my part.. but I can't help it!

Nice going on your game though anyways.

I take a lot of vassals to. But I annex them pretty quickly. I rather chose to take the hit for it. Instead of letting just be my vassals. At this stage. Can tell you I've more or less completed my goal. I played another 20 years and I'm in mid 1620's. Last 10 I've just tried to keep my vassals happy. And getting that badboy down. Man, I got hit severe for Macklenburg. I got a very bad reputation at this point. But let me scrap together a few words, and fetch some screens and I'll update you all. You won't believe the explosive growth.

I updated it again. Finally got the time to do it.
Any feedback is welcome.
Feel free to comment on what you think I did wrong. Where my next goal should be etc.

But at currant state, I'm already 30 years beyond this. I'll update that when I can. Also feel free to comment on how my writing is. Not my grammar is but structuring. And how I can best approve upon it.

Happy reading.
Cheers.

Nah. I just want Europe for now, within the bb limit.
I'm going to get a huge hit for annexing France. But I think thats still some 50 years ahead.

But I don't want to break the game of such just to beat it by taking the entire world. Want to keep it within a smaller context. But who knows. If I take Europe quickly I might just want to go down the route.
