I've got a rule that if I play a pirated game for more than 2 hours (not counting figuring out how it works) then I liked it enough to have purchased it, so I purchase it. I tend to only pirate games I'm unsure of though, so after one paradox game I've never had to pirate others since I'm confident in Paradox. Plus that whole lets play and demo and developer diary stuff helps me make the decision.

I think the only pirated games that I enjoy that I don't pay for are games that come from Japan or whatever that never get localized and as such I end up playing with fan-patches. Many of those refuse to sell outside their country anyway so that's their problem.

Reason why imho paradox Is one of the best gaming companies out there. I have a lot of respect for the folks who make this game. In touch with their fans and listen to em(well....not the WTF WHY ISNT SERBIA #1, BOSNIA SUCKZ TROLOLOL guys). I randomly stumbled across Eu3 on steam and decided to buy it. Which led me toCK2/EU4 and mount n blade. So glad I did. I cannot wait for bannerlords, the CK2 expansion and whatever looms after Conquest of Paradise.

I like the article, Thanks Regina!

I'd like to say though That i don't think Piracy helps the industry or drives sales... However it does help the consumer and prevents them from paying for a product they won't enjoy. Double edged sword here but in the end the best way to fight piracy is by doing exactly as Johann says. That and giving actual demos! I hate when a game looks epic but i can't play a demo. Untill quite recently demos where the way i even knew if my computer could run the game. I'm still don't know anything about my hardware but i know i can play most, if not all modern games.
