I got into a pickup game hosted by UK player Dredd on Valkyrie Net on Wednesday and we continued it last night. It was the 39 scenario on hard. And the players were:
Germany - Dredd
Japan - Andrew (me)
USA - DEFAULT/Tomar
UK - Wishing Well
USSR - RottenMlk / Rasputin
Italy - a Spanish guy on Wed and assorted players yesterday
On Wed, my focus was conquering nationalist China which I did ina few months. I then spent the rest of the session building up my forces. I wanted more airpower before tangling with the UK - Japan starts with a surprisingly weak air force in 39. Also, Dredd was running the game quite quickly after he had conquered France and I don't like fighting a war at high speed.
Last night I join the Axis in May 41. There were some immediate naval engagements with two UK fleets - one based in HK and one based in Singapore. These were sunk quite quickly but inflicted some annoying losses upon me - a BB and a CV. Malaya and the Netherlands East Indies then fell quite quickly as they had weak garrisons. But there was a huge British force in Burma which was too strong to take on in a frontal assault. I worked around their flanks and made two amphibious landings in India - at Calcutta and Madras. These then quickly overran the undefended sub-continent and eventually encircled Burma from the west. The encircled British redoubt proved to be a tough nut - about 14 divisions and 13 air units and was still holding out when we finished.
The USSR proved to be a softer target. I had agreed a non-aggression pact with its first leader but after a change at the top, I decided to renege and occupied Vladivostok and surrounding provinces easily. Their position in the west collapsed too and Germany panzer-grenadiers are now pushing deep into their heartland.
But the UK and USA are still defiant. Tomar is especially gung-ho as the Americans and I've seen him pull off a big comeback for the Allies with them before. My Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere is now furiously building to meet the expected American hi-tech onslaught. This may well resume next Friday, Jan 23rd when Dredd is next available ...
