From the journal of Blue Emu BronzeHoisted, Expedition Leader.

Finally, we're here!

Xv5OAg0.jpg

The bloody cookie-pushers back at Mountainhome nearly killed us all that time!... what the Hells were they thinking, sending a bunch of useless idiots like this across a desert? Nearly out of food and booze, and when we finally reached the river, it's full of damned Carp!

Well... there's no point in standing here grumbling. I'll get the lads busy, unpacking our remaining supplies and digging us in. One thing for sure... I'm not going any closer to that riverbank than I need to. Those damned Carp can jump ten feet, and drag you in. Then you go over the bloody waterfall, Carp and all.

Maybe we should build a tunnel under the river, instead of a bridge. I've never seen a Carp reach through solid rock to grab somebody.

I'll go take a look at the site...

My current plan is to dig a tunnel under the Carp-filled river, set the entrance to our fort down inside that tunnel, and set up positional defenses at both tunnel exits, north and south. Comments?

We have six Dwarves available, with more arriving in a few months.

I have claimed the Expedition Leader. Mechanic-Appraiser-Organizer + Social Skills.
I will be the Foreman and Trader until we get an immigrant with relevant skills.

That leaves:

Two Miners
One Mason-Architect-Marksdwarf-Ambusher (currently our only armed Dwarf)
One Lumberjack-Carpenter-Bowyer
One Grower-Weaponsmith
One Cook-Brewer-Armorsmith

Five new immigrants arrive in Summer, including three Fishermen! :D I think I'd better turn that labor off... the fish on this map will fish you right back. But we can certainly use some Haulers to help straighten out this mad-house.

[takes place in the peanut gallery]

so bassicly the plan is to make a T in the tunnel so we'd still have one entrance to defend

what did you bring with you ?

is there anything cool you can do with the waterfall?

edit: I'll the take the brewer-cook-armorsmith

I will take the Mason-Architect-Marksdwarf-Ambusher....I wonder how many updates I will survive!!!

Here we go again...

Dwarf me!

Demanvanwezel CopperWheeled is the Brewer-Cook-Armorsmith.
Rommel_HSQ StakeTemple is the Mason-Architect-Ambusher-Marksdwarf.
AsdfeZxcas LensSaved is a Miner-Poet.

Yes, the entrance is a "T", but a vertical one... one ramped entrance on each side of the E-W river, with stairs down in the connecting passage. Those stairs will later be covered by a drawbridge during sieges.

I brought the usual junk... Plump Helmets and Sweet Pods to grow in our underground farms, meat, LOTS of booze, some thread, cloth, leather, bags for collecting sand, more booze, a crossbow and some bolts for Rommel_HSQ, some rock in case we hit that Aquifer early, some ore in case we needed to make something before finding ore, more booze, four dogs, six peacocks, two cats, some Gypsum Powder to make casts in case we get injured, even more booze...

I can't think of anything unusual that I brought. I always check the Animal list, just in case, but this time it was just the usual horses and stuff. Once in a previous game, I was allowed to embark with Giant Cave Spiders! Expensive as Hell, but they make great guards.

Oh, yes... the Waterfall.

I've already done something with it. I've carved out an Observation Deck, with Fortifications (to BLOCK movement) between the seats and the falling water. The mist comes right in through the arrow-slits!

Waterfalls give Dorfs a happy feeling... unless they are drowning in one. Sometimes, even then!

Oooops. Short game THAT time!

Well... maybe it isn't THAT sort of deep pit. Whatever this is, I'll see if I can wall it off before it eats our faces off.

Have no fear, I will be the wall that protect your beard!!!

OK, it looks like this "Deep Pit" isn't quite as deep as I had feared... it doesn't reach all the way down to the Hidden Fun Stuff at the bottom of the world. It just seems to connect the first and second cavern levels together. I'm trying to wall us off from the cavern, now.

All right, we are walled off from the caverns. I will postpone further deep delving until after the Fall caravan.

Miner-poet? Why can't I be a major poet!

Oh, Carp! I mean, crap! They're reproducing. We now have more than 20 Carp on the map.

And yes, I missed the Fall caravan. Got too wrapped up in digging us in.

A Monkey stole an uncut gem and ran off the map. No big deal... this place is packed with gems, everything from Agates to Diamonds.

Holy carp dwarf fortress !

is it still vital to bring an anvil?

also if we're going to make an amusement park then we'll eventually need clowns

also aren't all entrances to the HFS covered in cotton candy?

Dwarf Fortress in non-ASCII art ?

Will be following, booted up DF a couple time but never managed to understand anything (the only thing I understood was how to replace the ASCII art with texture packs such as the one you use, but this esthetic change didn't tell me how to play). So I'll be following with interest.

Oh, and if you have a spare miner, then you can give my name to him

[One Lumberjack-Carpenter-Bowyer]

That dude if still available?
