This AAR is obviously about Mexico in 1861 start .
The story of this AAR is strange .
I was feeling very feverish and weak when i played out this PDM Mexican playthrough and i took some very poor decisions which led to an unparralled interesting story .

Then i decided to write this AAR from the standpoint of a few business barons who dominated Mexico during this period .

Important note -Seeing that a reactionary rebellion had occured in 1879 ,i used a cheat to open up a presedential dictator and hence i consider him to be Porfirio Diaz .

Let's begin .

The players (The men who dominated Mexico in its most disturbing period)
Note -Taken directly from Wikipedia .

Colonel William Cornell Greene

WilliamCornellGreene.jpg

Greene was born in Duck Creek, Wisconsin, on August 26, 1852, to Eleanor Cornell and Townsend Greene. He was educated at private schools and at the Chappaqua Mountain Institute in Chappaqua, New York.

Greene started off as a clerk for O. H. Angevin & Company where he worked for three years before heading out to the western United States as a surveying party member of the Northern Pacific Railroad. He left the Railroad and then in 1870 staked out the site of Fargo, North Dakota, before becoming involved with various businesses. He worked in both mining and cattle-raising industries across the west, which included Montana, Colorado, Arizona, and northern Mexico. He was reported to have had numerous encounters with local native tribes and outlaws that roamed the areas where he prospected .

Thus he was also a lead financier to Diaz in his early rule .

Luis Terrazas

250px-Don_Luis_Terrazas.jpg

Luis Terrazas, born José Luis Gonzaga Jesús Daniel Terrazas Fuentes (20 July 1829 in Chihuahua, Mexico – 18 June 1923 in Chihuahua), was a Mexican politician, businessman, rancher and soldier.
First elected Governor of Chihuahua in 1858, Terrazas was a host, political ally and confidant of President Benito Juárez during the French Intervention, when Juarez was living with his cabinet in exile in Chihuahua City from 1864 through 1866.
There are two anecdotal tales addressing Terrazas' wealth: when approached by American meat packer Swift and asked if he could provide a hundred thousand head of cattle, his rejoinder was "In what color?". And, when asked once at a social function if he were from Chihuahua, he was reported to have asserted "No soy de Chihuahua, Chihuahua es mío" ("I'm not from Chihuahua, Chihuahua is mine").

Weetman Dickinson Pearson

220px-Viscountcowdray.jpg

Weetman Dickinson Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray, GCVO, PC (15 July 1856 – 1 May 1927), known as Sir Weetman Pearson, Bt, between 1894 and 1910 and as The Baron Cowdray between 1910 and 1917, was a British engineer, oil industrialist, benefactor and Liberal politician. He was the owner of the Pearson conglomerate.

Ramón Corral Verdugo

230px-Ramon_Corral_Verdugo.jpg

Corral was born Ramón Corral Verdugo on Hacienda Las Mercedes (where his father worked), near the city of Álamos, Sonora, on 10 January 1854 to Fulgencio Fabián Corral Rochín (January, 1834–1868) and María Francisca Almada y Verdugo (1836- ). He was christened on 21 January 1854 at the Purísima Concepción Roman Catholic Church in Mexico.

Ramón Corral first gained public attention in 1872, when General Don Ignacio L. Pesqueira, Governor of the State of Sonora, an undefeated general who had provided many services to his state, created public outrage.[citation needed] To avoid compliance with a law, Pesqueira introduced, among other reforms, a non- re-election provision for the office of governor. On this occasion, the young Corral vigorously fought against the Pesqueira administration through the press, founding the newspapers El Fantasma (The phantom), and La Voz de Álamos (The voice of Álamos). His writings in the papers exhibited civil valor, love for democracy, and power as a political adversary of the Pesqueira administration.[citation needed] In the years that followed, Corral increasingly became involved in politics.

Jose Limantour

220px-Jos%C3%A9_Yves_Limantour_1910.jpg

José Limantour was born on 26 December 1854 in Mexico City, Mexico. His parents were Joseph Yves Limantour, a ship captain from Brittany, France, and Adèle Marquet, who came from Bordeaux. The Limantour family grew wealthy through land speculation in Baja California and Mexico City when the Liberals seized church property, redistributing land. After private primary schooling in Mexico, Limantour went to Europe at 14. There he attended the National Preparatory School. He received a law degree with specialized studies in economics and management. He returned to Mexico at the inception of Porfiriato, teaching at the School of Commerce and the National School of Jurisprudence.

Chapter 1 .

In 1879 ,when Don Porfirio Diaz took over absolute control of the country ,Mexico was in ruins .The French and American wars had destroyed the economy and pride of the country. Mexico was still backward compared to other civilized countries and most importantly ,it was still divided .Diaz had came to power due to a small armed rebellion against the previous president Lerdo de Tejada .It had essentially been a republican versus Liberal war and the liberals under Diaz had won .

While Diaz himself had ran the campaign for no reelections ,his inner wish was to stabilize Mexico at all costs even if it meant going down on his own words .

But there had been another group that had fought along with Diaz but was non Liberal .This groups was the Socialist army under Francisco Zalacosta who had hoped that Diaz would do both ,agree to his demands for worker and peasant rights and also give him the post of vice president .

Now Diaz was in a dilemma ,Zalacosta had an army of 1300 rag tag fighters under his command and to make negotiations smoother ,Zalacosta had stationed himself directly outside Mexico city in an offensive stance .
To answer that ,Diaz had only 701 well trained troops .The Mexican military itself was nonexistant due to constant rebellion and wars and thus these 701 men were the remnants of that institution .

Diaz now pondered his next move .But while he was doing that ,other devils were planning to help him make up his mind .
Don Luis Terrazas knew ,that if Zalacosta gained power ,then he would pursue agrarian reform which would destroy his fledging empire .So he started pulling strings to influence Diaz's decision .

The first thing which he did was to send a fast horseman to Arizona where the Colonel William Greene was camping for some speculation on land .
The horseman was given a message which contained a contract for Greene .If Greene could pull some favors out of his friends in the Texas rangers and force them to intervene against Zalacosta ,then Terrazas would give him a small fortune and also the Hacienda San Rafael in central Mexico .

It was a decision that Terrazas would regret for the rest of his life ,for it brought this charismatic American on the scene as a major player .

Greene accepted and within mere days ,the United States army under Richards Matson ,numbering about 800 infantry ,300 cavalry , 70 cannons and Greene with his entourage started towards Mexico city !

usdragoon1847mexicanwar.jpg
The American detachment .

Hearing of this dire news ,Zalacosta decided to retreat south to the Yucatan .

By 8th April 1879 ,American troops had reached Mexico city where the general and Greene met with Diaz .Their talks were purely about the military according to the official reports but it is quite well known that Greene used this meeting as an opportunity to discuss business with Diaz .The results of this talks would be seen in a few months time .

The Americans waited for 3 days in Mexico city ,while this was going on ,Zalacosta was murdered by his own second in command Vincente Milano ,an Italian mercenary who had risen through the ranks .He sent a diplomat to the American army from the Yucatan asking for pardon in exchange for total surrender .
The deal was accepted .Milano left for Italy ,the Americans left for America ,Greene left for his new hacienda to enjoy its pleasures and the soldiers working for the rebel group returned to their fields to work like they deserved (According to the elites).

1880 dawned and Diaz took one of the foremost important steps that any country in that time needed to take to modernize ...............................building railroads .

But Mexico did not have the money to built them .At the beginning of 1880 ,Mexico had just one railroad which ran from Veracruz to Mexico city .
Now this was a golden opportunity for William Greene or Bill as he was called to become independent from Terrazas economically ,so he offered a deal to Diaz .

He offered to accept a contract to built a railroad from Saltillo(Which was close to his Hacienda San Rafael) to Monterry .The irony was that ,he was using the same cash that Don Terrazas had given to him as blood money .
When Terrazas learnt of this ,he started taking his own steps .He decreased the price that Greene had offered by a whopping 30% .Thus a race started to secure the contract.

Diaz ,wanting to build the railroad at the lowest price possible added fuel to the fire by making public quotes concerning the dire need of good natured help to the state at low prices .He also offered certain royal titles to the winner of this 'race' .

But there was no way that Greene could compete against the immense finanacial resources of Terzzas who owned thousand's of acres of lands .So he called in help from the states .
He formed a new company called 'Mexico rails corporation' and offered large amounts of shares to industrial giants like Vanderbilt and Morgan .
Thus ,the contribution of these giants and Terazzas's voluntary withdrawal finally meant victory for Greene .

300px-14Orizaba_desde_el_Puente_de_Paso_del_Toro.png

Thus construction on the railroad begin in May 1880 .
Diaz made Greene an official 'Advisor' .When Don Terrazas learnt of this ,he laughed .This was a position that he could buy up at any time .
But for Greene ,his dream was coming true ,after years of adventuring and making rough business deals in border states ,he had finally secured a major base for himself in here ."Maybe" he thought ,Mexico was his destined home .

For now Greene was happy ,Diaz was happy ,the Americans were happy and the emotions of the people didn't matter .

But a new player was to enter the scene in early 1882 .

Mexico, a wonderful country regardless of the start date with so much potential before her.

Will be watching. But I must say, seems like so much backroom corruption already. Old Stereotypes die hard? :p

Best of luck,
Cheers!

First of all thanks so much for commenting man ,your comments are like fuel to me .
But unfortunately ,the potential won't be used much ,in fact ,the whole story is about how certain people profit out of the country's misfortunes ,as i mentioned ,i was feverish .
On the other hand ,sometimes ,Mexico will indeed make some strange decisions .

"But hang on ,read on ,for as i said ,i am a magician ,i will take you to places which you imagine and who knows ,maybe you will start enjoying the story as much as me .:

Chapter 2 .

On paper 'The Yucatan crisis ' was a simple affair of a foreign power supporting the independence of a nation while another foreign power negotiated on the side of the country from which the nation in question would gain independence .But go inside deep enough and you may find a story of sad deceit ,corruption and treason to the very fabric of humanity.

250px-Republic_of_Yucatan_%28orthographic_projection%29.svg.png
Map showing the location of this southernmost Mexican state .

The crisis started out when the French(2 February 1882) announced that 'The sad state of Mexican oppression in the Yucatan has to be remedied immediately' .Thus they immediately sent diplomats to Mexico city to threaten Diaz into accepting Yucatecan independence .Diaz at first felt threatened knowing well that even if the French would not seriously consider making true their threat ,his own political position in Mexico was under threat .

This confused state of Diaz and his advisors represented opportunity for a British giant , Weetman Pearson commonly known as Lord Cowdray .

Cowdray had long , eyed the mineral rich lands of northern Mexico .Now he travelled to Mexico city to discuss diplomacy with Diaz .
Cowdray's proposition was simple ,he assured Diaz that he would pursue the Mexican cause in London if Diaz agreed to sell him land cheap in the state of Nuevo Leon and others .Then Cowdray returned to Britain .

But the then British prime minister William Evart Gladstaone was not interested in 'renewed intrigue with France' .Cowdray remarked in answer that 'In modern times ,money can eliminate royalty ' .He poured money like water in the hands of politicians ,businessmen ,military generals and others ,he even managed to acquire a meeting with the Queen herself .Finally on 24th February 1882 ,Britain declared its support for the Mexican cause .
For another week or two ,the French held on to their demands ,but when Cowdray remarked in an interview that 'It takes just a small flame to turn a crisis into a war ' ,the French wavered .Finally when Germany also supported the Mexican cause ,France retreated and the crisis was over .

When Cowdray returned to Mexico city and asked for his reward ,Diaz was reported to have said 'Just go and stand wherever you wish and you may claim a 100 miles around atleast , for the cheapest of price' .Cowdray's first move was to hire a huge contingent of experienced geologists and surveyors to determine the best place in Northern Mexico for minerals .
Meanwhile ,personally ,he acquired a plantational land near Bolson Del Los Muertos where he started building a new home for himself .

Now like all other foreign investors in Mexico ,he too was intrigued and amazed by the regal style with which these rich hacendados lived .So he built a very traditional Hacienda for himself to live in when he visited Mexico .The land adjoining the Hacienda was converted into a cattle ranch and the old sugar plantation half a mile from it was brought for upfront cash in British pounds .

But as for the geologists ,they would take the next 7 and a half months to locate the best site for buying mineral rich land .They finally found it near Alamos ,he had literally struck gold .

But Cowdray's outstanding success was watched with jealousy by the other two players .

But whatever may have been their differences ,they were set aside when Diaz called them all for a week long meeting in March 1883 .

This looks interesting, and by the sounds of it Mexico has a lot of further troubles ahead.

Thanks so much for commenting man ,you are so generous .:)
You're welcome. Commenting is ... sort of what I do. :)

Chapter 3.

The annual Mexico city fair was a momentous affair .It was proposed to go on for 45 in March and April 1883 .It featured all the art ,culture and business of Mexico at one place .In theory it was designed to look just like the world fair ,but featuring stuff from Mexican states rather than different countries .
Mayan dances from Yucatan .
Vaqueros from Sonora
Aztec drinks from Central Mexico and technological marvels from Mexico city's forward minded population of course .

In reality ,it was a grand spectacle arranged by President Diaz to highlight two things .
1)The fact that the position of the treasury had improved by leaps and bounds from the previous decade and
2)His own power was paramount and absolute .

Called to the meetings were people of all sorts .European royals ,Mexican politicians ,rich landowners ,investors ,Military officers(Though this lot was secluded from the others) and other VIP's from Europe .Thus for this very reason ,Diaz had also invited men like Cowdray ,Terrazas and William Greene from London ,Chihuahua and Arizona respectively .
By 1883 ,Diaz had made such political moves that he was called a 'Presedential dictator' .He made made the parliament and its power non existant .Thus he made it clear that it was he who ran the country and those who were in his favor profited .

In effect he now ran Mexico like a mob boss who ran his territory with the help of lieutenants and these lieutenants were no necessary military men .They were also business men ,randhers ,plantation owners ,diplomats .
All of them were however racists ,technocratic and forward thinking for their own profits .
They reflected Diaz's larger goal of going to all lengths possible to make Mexico seem open ,prime and good for foreign investment .

And thus these men were dubbed by Mexicans as Científicos .

1884_Fair_Octaganal.jpg

The meeting that he had planned for them in the makeshift palace right in the middle of the world fair was for hearing their opinions on the decisions that he would take .

Thus........................................................................................................................this was the real parliament .

700px-Flag_of_Mexico_%281823-1864%2C_1867-1893%29.svg.png

"Gentlemen ,we are here at the fair for celebrating the success of Mexico ,we all Mexicans should rejoice for it " said Diaz .

Then seeing Greene ,Cowdray and the other foreigners smile falsely he continued "Also our benefactors from all over the world " .

Then questioningly he said "I am planning to institute a better school system in Mexico ,however at the same time ,the workers are demanding some trinket pensions like they hand out in Germany and Britain" .

Taking the cue ,huge voices started ringing out as everyone debated which issue was more important of the two .Among the voices were also members of the Vanderbilt and Rockfeller families .

Then a hand came up .Diaz waved his own hand ."May i speak?" asked the man .

"Yes" said Diaz .

It was Jose Limtour ,a land speculator from Baja California .Some said that not even a lamppost was constructed in Baja California without his approval .Ambitious and powerful ,most of the people in his area in Baja California revered him more than they revered Diaz .It was well known that he had plans to become president one day .But for now ,he was loyal to Diaz .

Then Limantour said "The indijos ,the backward people ,what will you gain by educating them much ,destined to work as labor in the fields anyway ,it would be a waste of money ,instead by promising pensions to those same people ,we can appease them in a minimal price .I mean ,come on gentlemen ,consider it the money that you donate at church .Just a tiny bit of pesos .I mean ,i keep losing coins all the time during my travels ,its that small an amount ......................its a Trinket pension"

"Trinket pension" "Trinket Pension" the words resounded in the hall as everyone present voiced their approval .

In that same meeting Diaz also announced that he was planning a railroad revolution in Mexico ,a mass buildup of railroads that would forever modernize the nation .Contracts he said ,would be handed out soon .

Then with the singing of the Mexican anthem ,the meeting commenced .The man who sung it with the most fervour was William Greene .

After the meeting ,Greene happened to visit the Black building where the military leaders were forced to live in a secluded condition so as to not scare the rich European guests .
The building itself was painted grey and was made of adobe .Inside ,the people were all doing the same thing .Drinking ,gossiping and playing with some woman who Greene suspected had been provided by Diaz himself .
Greene's arrival produced a shock on many of the occupant's faces but nevertheless Greene continued on towards his destination .

Taking the stairs ,he reached the first floor where he went to the third and most lavish room ,marked on it were the words "Nuevo Leon" ,a small flag of Nuevo Leon state had been engraved on the door plate .He gently knocked the door .A man of great stature and military handsomeness greeted him ."Welcome Senior Greene" he said .

"Greetings General Ignacio Sanchez ,i have a small gift for you" said Greene taking out his trunk .

Sanchez peered inside as Greene took out a beautifully engraved key and opened it .Inside was a latest Winchester repeater .But not any ordinary one .Its muzzle had been plastered in pure gold !

15999437_1.jpg

Then he handed the Winchester to the general who was thrilled .

"Si ,Thank you senior thank you" said the general like a child who had just been offered a new toy .

"I will never forget this gesture of friendship ,come ,lets drink to our pleasure " he continued .

"Wait up general ,i have another small gift for you " said Greene taking a seat .

From his huge overcoat Greene produced a small packet .

Inside were about 5000 American dollars .

A good post to scene the scene of this great meeting.

Chapter 4 .

Everything was silent .Peaceful .The laborers were working well and the plantation of Santa Anita owned by Terrazas .The foreman himself was in a good modd today .Most of the workers had arrived on time and though there were a few lazy louts hiding in their homes ,the crack of his whip on the ground was enough to bring their lazy sking out to work in the field .The intense heat combined with the absolute silence was somewhat haunting for the foreman .

Sow when he saw ,at a distance ,several figures sprinting like a horse ,his cry was vicious ."Guards ,guards" he cried out .

By the time the motely band of lazy guards had even managed to gather ,they were cut down by accurate arrowheads and rifle fire .Then the figures finally came closer and closer to the foreman ."Tarahumaras" he cried out ."INDIANS" .
Finally ,one of their band came close enough and looked the foreman in the eye .The foreman's hand went to his pistol .He raised it ,BANG .
He was shot from the back .

220px-Tarahumaras1.jpg

(The Tarahumara word for themselves, Rarámuri, means "runners on foot" or "those who run fast" in their native tongue according to some early ethnographers like Norwegian Carl Lumholtz, though this interpretation has not been fully agreed upon. With widely dispersed settlements, these people developed a tradition of long-distance running up to 200 miles (320 km) in one session, over a period of two days through their homeland of rough canyon country, for inter-village communication, transportation, and hunting.)

Within minutes they had grabbed a firebrand and set fire to the plantation storehouse .Then they freed the laborers and at the same time killed some of them .After that .they went straight for the manor itself .There the niece of Don Terrazas just put her hands up .

They took her and then they disappeared ,the same way that they had come .

Meanwhile ,back in a small room in Wall street NY ,a different kind of stand off was going on .

engraved-view-along-wall-street-new-york-city-circa-1880-picture-id551408991

"What is this Mr.Greene " said the top hatted man in an angry voice .
In front of the man was a page showing the condition of Mexico holdings inc(The new name of Mexico rails) .The company now owned in Mexico

1)Two railroad lines
2)The haceinda San Rafael and its economic assets (The hacienda itself was privately owned by Greene while the plantations around it were owned by his enterprise) .
3)Miscellaneous other small business .

Since Greene had first started it two years ago ,business had generally been good and he had expanded the huge thousand acres plantation into a million dollar enterprise .
Hence when the top hatted man angrily enquired ,Greene was surprised .

"What's the problem Mr .Vanderbilt ,business is good" said Greene .

The top hatted man sipped some more wine and then said "Mr.Greene ,as we know ,you own 35% shares ,our company owns 20% ,Morgan owns 10% and the remaining 35% is in public domains .
But now ,it looks like somebody is making moves against us .Some random company ,never heard of before has got 8% of shares and are quickly buying more ,that puts our financial situation in jeopardy "

"Oh my god ,sir ,what is the name of this company?" asked Greene .

"My broker tells me its 'Eagle enterprise' ,but they are very secretive ,hidden under layers of insulation ,the broker who works for them is like a mercenary ,he isn't their broker ,rather he takes order from another layer of brokerage" said Vanderbilt .

At the same time(2nd April 1883) in the hot border wilderness of Chihuahua ,the legendary bandido and Indian scalp hunter Richardo Silvestro ,nicknamed as the butcher waited in his cave .Today was a special day .Today he would get to practice his trade in a slightly more legal manner .
Just then ,the entourage arrived ,minimally armed as promised .Paved with gold on both sides ,the cart itself looked royal .Finally it came to a stop and then the driver got off and opened the door .From inside emerged a middle aged man of royal tidings .On seeing him ,Silvestro also got up and greeted him in a civilized voice .

"Welcome Don Terrazas ,what services may i offer you today?"

This emphasises the many problems Mexico faces.
