Economies of scale is the concept that when more is produced, the average cost per unit produced declines. It is actually the whole reason why cities exist in the first place, instead of people living scattered across the countryside. When we in the real world see large industrial areas or clusters of commercial skyscrapers, it is because that they benefit from each others presence. In short, when many people live near each other, it pays for them to specialize in particular professions. On the other hand, there are diseconomics of scale to cities aswell, such as policing and sewage treatment, which cost much less to people living in the countryside.

Sadly no such mechanism exists in the game, which is a great pity. However, I'm guessing it wouldn't be impossible to create a mod that would introduce economies of scale. I can't do it myself because I don't know anything about computer science. I'm an economist.
