Forgive me, if this has been asked and answered before...I've spent 2 hours searching these fora for an answer. I'm mainly interested in the armynames.csv and randomleaders.csv files.

Can entries be added to the armynames.csv? I think Hartmann already tried this, but the results appeared inconclusive - has anyone else done more extensive testing?

Can entries in randomleaders.csv be ALTERED or even added? The specific reason: The Danish random leaders are all (except one) city names. I don't think that's historical.

If anyone has had success with this, I'm going to work on finding names, particularly to the armynames.csv file. Since we can't edit the names in-game (which would be great), it might be possible to come up with some 'better' names fo rminors than just 'territory_regiment'. And I would like to change the randomleaders.csv for Denmark!

Heck, I'm gonna try to edit this stuff tonight anyway, but if any of you had experience, that'd be great to hear about.

I have edited randomleaders.csv file to replace names of Polish leaders (same story as with Danish and many other countries, several names are city or even river names) and it works without any problems for me. Haven't tried armynames.csv file yet.

Well, I tried changing the names in the randomleaders.csv, and it didn't work. When the names were changed, all my generic commanders are named 'Denmark', both for saved games and new ones. I changed all the names and added 3, so they're now Danish nobility with significant military careers. Maybe I should only alter the names, and not add new entries?

Adding new entries in the armynames.csv didn't do anything either. Maybe some should be deleted??

By the way, I edited the files using Excel. Nothing's wrong with that, right?

No, the formats are still .csv files. I was only asking because the files grew somewhat larger, even though I did not change all that much.

Actually, I think I have found that the armynames.csv is not used for anything - although deleting it causes the program not to start at all. I need to do more testing on this, however.

Still, I'm baffled by the fact that editing the randomleaders.csv file doesn't do *anything* at all.

Ok, here's the deal:

There are two files called RandomLeaders.csv, one in the db directory and one in db/leaders. It is the latter one that you should edit because the other one is not used by the game at all. It had me stumped for a long time... That is not all, however; many nations share the same tag instead of using the nation tag. So, all German leader names reside under HEI (with exceptions like Austria to make things interesting), Muslim nations share MUS and Italian nations share ITA.

Thanks Doomdark for the clarifications. I figured as much regarding the two files, and I edited both of them so they were identical. That's when results only yielded 'Denmark' for all my leaders. However, this happened when I edited current AND added entries. Maybe only editing is allowed, and only adding when removing others. Something....

Once again I edited randomleaders.csv fie by both changing entries and adding new ones without deleting any. Did it only to a file contained in db/leader directory. And frankly speaking I've seen posts in another thread saying that the results of such editing are sometimes positive and sometimes negative. Perhaps it only works for 'major' countries like Poland :( . But I assume you changed Denmark to 'major'. So maybe it works only for original 'majors'?

No, no. It works for any countries except:

1) Muslim graphic tags. All random leaders for them are to be found under the MUS tag. This means, that e.g. defining randomleadernames for TRI will not work - they will get the names from MUS

1a) Exception to 1): Turkey can have her own leaders defined through TUR

2) Italian Countries. All random leaders for them are defined under the ITA tag.

2a) Exception to 2): Venice

3) German Countries. Random leaders are defined under the HEI tag.

3a) Exceptions to 3): Prussia, Austria, (Bavaria also, I think)

4) FRA defines also the leaders for FPR, SPA for SPR, ENG for ROY.

5) I didn´t check the relation of the KAL tag to Scandinavian countries, but I would be not surprised to find, that there´s also some interdepenceny (e.g. with NOR).

As I said, all other tags can be given randomleaders to in randomleaders.csv (which HAS to be placed in dbleaders.

Hmm, I couldn't find the KAL tag anywhere. I assume it's part of the ICG - which prompts the following question: Is it necessary to update to the ICG to make these changes??

If it is, I feel rather silly! :)

YES!!!

I finally figured it out...

Excel 2000 alters all entries in .csv files when they are edited. Even when saved as csv files, Excel puts ' ' (what are they called??) around all entries, and EU doesn't like that. I discovered this only because I noticed that the files increase too much in size, even when editing just small things. So I opened a .csv file with notepad and edited there. This works.

So, I'm happy to report that the Danish leaders are now named properly (at least in my IGC :D), and the army units now have appropriate names. Thanks for the pointers, everyone!

Hartmann, if you want some better random names for the Danish leaders, I'll be happy to send them to you.

Hehe, the '' problem - that happened to me, too, in my first editing attempts loooong ago. Sorry for not mentioning that, I just didn´t think of it (even as I warn people in the IGC readme not to use excel).

I´ll send You a private message with my emailaddress so that You can send me the Danish randomleader names. :)

Hartmann

Edit: I notice You have not activated PM. Just post the list of Danish leadernames (in the right format) at the 'Leaders for all nations' thread.
