Thx for the pointer Havard re event 3833. I guess I did nto want the Council (or expect) it to have as drastic an impact as the Byzantium event gives. I added it more for flavour (like the Antipopes, unlikely conditions to make them occur) and the Dunk-the-Witch event. I have not seen the 3833 event occur cause AI-Byzantium has never survived long enough for it in my games...

RE the antipopes guys, I am no expert but my history book source identifies Amedee the VIII of Savoy as the last antipope. Elected in Ferrare in 1439, he wore the userper-papal-purple until 1449 when he abdicated after the Council of Bale.

The Document, as well as akcnowledging the spiritual authority of the Church, granted it Temporal Authority as well. This document was used to enhance the Pope's territorial claims in Italy. This document, however, was proven to be a forgery, and showed it was written 4 centuries after the death of the Emperor Constantine"

Option A: OK
-4 stability

The guy who proved was actually employed by the Pope to look through old documents, so it was "accepted" within the Papacy. You could split the event into two bits, one to publise it the second to suppress the information. Publising gives bad relationships with the "continental" Italian states (Tuscany, Siena, Venice(?), Genoa, Milan, Mantua, Naples), lower stability but more innovation. Suppressing it gives lower innovation and perhaps a infrastructure loss.

#Summis Desiderantis Encyclic# should ideally trigger two events in catholic countries, whether to enforce the "anti-witchcraft" decree or not, if yes a random "Witchcraft" event can occur.

Hello. Permit my introduction as a long time lurker with no great english writing skill. My last game was with the Papal States, and I agree with my predecessors on this thread that they need events. And some fantasy events, of course, because a theocratical state becoming a major nation would have changed a lot of things. So, I read a lot on the history of the papal states, the crusades, why there was no more crusades past the XIIIth century, the history of the italy, why there was no united kingdom of italy, the relationship between the pope and the big catholic states, and so on. I began to work on almost twenty events and, after reading the ideas in this thread, I was happy to see that my work could have some interest.

I have the following guidelines in mind for the papal states events:

1- The player of the papal states represents the temporal power of the papal states, not the catholic church. And I agree with Mister Brock that's mostly for practical reasons, game-wise and events-wise.
2- Of course, we want the fun of changing history. On the other hand, we want also historical realism. :)
3- The Papal States did not have a lot of territorial legitimacy. The pope had to depend on a aristocracy not too loyal. Each time he made war, each time he tried to take new domains, he lost a lot of credibility. So, to express that, at least, the player of the papal states should be plagued by aristocracy and decentralization events.
4- The Papal States of the XVth century is too powerful in the game. The Holy See did not really control his territories, so there was no good way to take new ones. So some new bad events, not too many or too hard because rule #2.
5- I'm pretty sure that a powerful papal states would have seriously considered about making some new crusades against Islam. Indeed, the papal states were italian, with a culture and a history centered around the Mediterrany. By doing some crusades, they would also justify their temporal power, using it for the good of all christians.

About the discussed proposals:

Shi Huangdi:
The Donation of Constantine forgery event is neat, but when you look at the actuals consequences of the proof of the forgery, you don't see any scandal. It seems nobody cared that much about the document. There was disappointment, and it did help the cynicism grow against the temporal power of the church, but no more. So, a -4 stability is way too much. At worse, -1 stability. It could very well be a flavour event with no consequences.

David Comnenus:
With all due respect, and guided by my guidelines #1 and #2 above, I think there should not be such world-spanning and historical-shattering event. In other words, I don't think the player of the papal states should be able to stop the happening of the protestantism. The causes were too numerous and complex to limit such a change to one or two or three events. Better yet, the Reform is so important for our history that stopping it in the game would just impoverish the gaming experience.

About my own proposals:

I will post my proposals in three or four parts. The first part, that follow, is composed of the most significant historicals events for the papal states that I can think of, without fantasy and without conditions. Of course, when there is a choice offered, the option B is fantasy.

1439: Council of Basle
Convoked in 1431 and closed in 1449, the true issue of this council was to determine if it was the pope or the periodicals councils which was to govern the church. It did not go well. Was it the pope thirst of power or the radicalism of the conciliars theorists, no compromise was found. What should have been a great opportunity to reform the church and restore confidence just created more chaos. The last antipope was elected in 1439 by the council, Amadeus Duke of Savoy, under the name of Felix V. He did not have a great success as a antipope, and submitted in 1449. The fate of the catholic church was sealed, in the form of a monarchical hierarchy who would not be able to react to the new challenges to come.
Option A: Antipope election
-2 stability, -50 dc, -20 relation Savoy, -20 Helvetia

1492: Holy See Corruption
Corruption, venality, nepotism and intrigues undermine the credibility of the Holy See in Europe.
Option A: We are working on it
+1 BadBoy -1 stability, +1 serfdom -1 centralisation

1537: Papal Bull "Sublimis Deus"
Following a long theological dispute, the pope Paul III decrees that the americans indians possess a soul and that their lives and proprieties should be protected. That encouraged the creation of new missionnary orders and was completely ignored by the rich conquerors of the New-World.
a-They have souls
+100 dc, +1 missionnary. -10 Castille -10 Portugal -10 Espagne
b- They don't
+1 conquistador, +1 serfdom

1704: The Question of the Chinese Rites
On several occasions since 1645, the jesuits missionaries in China were criticized because they were letting their converts worship the ancestors. The jesuits explained that it was only a courtesy and an act of filial piety that was faciliting the acceptation of the christianism in the very traditionnal chinese society. In 1704, Rome forbid for good that practice, bringing about the expulsion of all missionaries and the persecution of the chinese converts.
Option A: That ancestor worship is heresy
-1 innovation, -10 Chine
Option B: That ancestor worship is filial piety
+1 innovation, -1 stability, 1 explorator

1759: The Encyclopedia
The french Encyclopedia of Diderot had universel, scientific and educative ambitions. The greatest thinkers of the time took part in the redaction. It was a triomphe of free thinking. However, it did contain a lot of republican and anti-clerical ideas much displeasing for most of the rulers of the time. In 1759, the pope condamned it and had the publication suspended
Option A: Let's condamn
-1 innovation, +1 serfdom +1 aristocracy

1795: Enlightenment
The Enlightenment Century had called into question the dogmas and the traditionnal structures on whose the Catholic Church was based. The popular revolutions, the Human Right Declaration, the attempts to democratize the clerical hierarchy were all condamned by the Holy See. It did not help extinguish the growing rationalism and nationalism.
Option A: Let's condamn
-2 innovation, +1 serfdom, +1 aristocracy, -1 stability, -100 dc

Hi,

You do know that the last post prior to yours on this thread is over a year old :). Anyway I agree with your points about previous posts here, which is why I haven't really tried to shape them up and include them.

As I've mentioned elsewhere there is an event for the election of Amadeus V of Savoy in the Savoy event set. It might be nice to trigger that from the Papal event. There is also an Aragonese event for the last of the prior anti-popes.

An alternate ending for the Council of Basel would be nice. But the papacy woudl have been very different if it had accepted the councilar principal even a little.

As to your thoughts on crusades I think it's noteworthy that in the late 17th century the Pope sent considerable financial support for the war against the Ottomans. Fits in with your premise.

I think there is an event for the Concordat of 1802 (with Napoleon) also.

I like your events, but wonder if they shouldn't have more choices.

Shouldn't we actually appreciate people using the search engine instead of mocking with how old the threads they dug up are? ;)
More events for the papacy would surely be nice.
Since it starts out much too strong, what about freeing Bologna as MKJ and the AGC have done already quite a while ago? The city was only nominally subordinate to the pope and annexed definitely in the beginning of the 16th century IIRC.

I like them as well.
1704: The Question of the Chinese Rites, option B ought to give lower relations w some catholic states. IMO the event should be mainly diplomatic.
1492: Holy See Corruption might not need options, but could be a bad random event for PAP. Badboy increase suits well.
I have no real opinion on Bologna, not knowing to much about the geography then.
Start scripting soon if you want something in 1.4.

Yeah that came across rather badly now that I look at it. Still I suspect the original posters aren't around any more.

Malodini, do you want help with scripting these, or can you give it a shot yourself.

Not directly related to the Papal States, but:
Shouldn't the Treaty of Tordesillas happen earlier? In EU2 it can only happen after 1505, while the historical Treaty was on June 7th 1494. I don't demand that it should happen on the exact historical date (although I wouldn't know why not), however it seems strange that it's impossible to trigger that early.

Well, well. I thought it would be rude to start a new thread on the same subject. And anyway I was expecting to look silly now and again. :)

The scripting is in my "to do" list, just after the "learning to script" step, the "finishing to translate from good french to bad english my events" bigger step, and the "intelligently answering the good people from the forum" still bigger step. ;) At best, I will be scripting in two or three weeks. So if somebody want to script, it would be very cool.

Brock,
I wonder too if my events should'nt have more choices. However, my understanding of the Council of Basle is there was no way a compromise could be reached. The Pope had called the Council to have a compromise, and it did not turn that way. If he would have submitted to the will of the council, it would have indeed changed everything. ICBW, but I think his temporal power would have been in great danger. Maybe a monarchical catholic church is necessary for a theocratical papal states?

Mnorrefeldt,
I'm not sure that the Question of Chinese Rites should have so much diplomatic consequences. After all, the dispute was mainly between missionaries orders, theologians and the church hierarchy. I think also it was a significant event because it defined the relation of the catholic church with un-european free nations. The explorer would symbolize that new opening to the world.

Hello,
the second part of my events proposal is centered around the expansion of the papal states and the consequences of it.

30 to 40 years after annexion of X (Lombardia, Mantua, Emilia, Firenze ou Siena)
The relations between the papal admnistration and the local aristocracies always were very tricky. The province X settled, some influent nobles would claim more rights and privileges in their domains. Just to avoid the call into question of his temporal power by all christianity, the pope would usually accept.
Option A: Let it be
+1 aristocracy, -1 centralization
Option B: Enough. Let's excommunicate
-2 stability, +1 BadBoy

5 to 10 years after the annexion of all the following provinces: Lombardia, Firenze, Emilia, Mantua and Siena.
The Question of the Kingdom of Italy
In the course of history, the pope never wanted the unification of the Kingdom of Italy, by fear that it would annex his own states. By unifying the north of Italy, the object of his fears had disappeared, but the legitimacy of his territorial possessions had never been so questionable. The great european dynasties didn't like at all the Holy See temporal expansion, and so did ask the pope to release Milan as vassal.
Option A: Let it be
Milan released as vassal, -1 BadBoy [in addition of the badboy vassal soustraction], +1 stability, +10 Austria
b-The Kingdom of Italy is no more
+1 Badboy, -1 stability, -50dc, -50 relation with Austria, -20 Genoa, -20 Naples, -20 Venice, -20 France, -20 Aragon, -10 Castille, -10 Spain, -10 England

Past 1600 and 30 to 40 years after the annexion of all the following provinces: Lombardia and Napoli
Italian nationalism
By unifying the north and south Italy, the Holy See did help to the awakening and the developpment of a strong italian nationalism.
Option A: Let's persecute italian nationalism
+1 aristocracy, +1 serfdom, -1 innovation, -1 stability, +20 relation with all countries with at least 1 italian province
Option B: Let's embrace italian nationalism for the glory of the Catholic Church
-1 serfdom, +1 innovation, -2 stability, Casus Belli for 100 years on all countries with at least 1 italian province, -30 relation with these same countries

Past 1700, random, with possession of X (Napolia, Firenze, Lombardia, Liguria and Venice)
Revolt against the temporal rulership of the pope
The republicans ideas and the anti-clericalism were gaining a lot of ground in the enlightement century. In the papal italian theocracy, such ideas were particularly persecuted. A lot of people had to gain from the fall of the papal states. Ironically, the ever ambitious italian aristocracy fostered secret societies, with the financial help from both the catholic and protestant nations. Some people in the catholic church itself quietly promoted such conspiracies, if just in hope that the loss of its temporal power would put the Holy See back to his spiritual priorities.
Option A: God help us
Revolt in province X, -1 stability, -100 trade investment, -100 infra investment, -100 naval investment, -100 land investment, -100 dc.

Hello,
the third part of my events proposal is centered around the religious conflicts and the possibility of crusades. It is mostly fantasy. I'm waiting for the criticism and suggestions. Oh, and I fear my crusades events are too positive. The reasoning was that it would be difficult enough already to get and to keep these islamic provinces. ICBW

1500: Jerusalem and the New-World
Notwithstanding the spanish and portuguese enthousiasm for the New-World, Jerusalem remains at the heart of the european imaginary. In Italy, that imaginary coincide with very real commercial interests and a justified fear of the Islam power on the Mediterrany. On the other hand, nobody in Italy was believing in a victorious new crusade, with ou without the help of Castille.
Option A: Let's encourage the conquest of the New-World.
Castille +10, Portugal +10, Spain +10, +1 missionnary, +1 diplomat, +1 trader
Option B: Let's go to the reconquest of Jerusalem and the bishopric of Saint-Augustin.
-3 stability, -100dc, -1 missionnary, -1 diplomat, -1 trader, cores on Judea, Samaria and Tunis, Knights +100, Ottomans -50, Mameluks -100, Hedjaz -100, Tunisia -100, Algiers -50, Spain -10, Aragon -10, Castille -10.

1520: Reaction to Luther
Not really seeing the threat, Leon X excommunicate Luther, "some drunken german", he said. The Pope is infallible and the sales of indulgences are good. Only the Church can interpret the Bible.
Option A: Let's excommunicate.
+100 dc
Option B: Let's negotiate. The pope call a new council to discuss the question but the italians prelates won't believe it. There will be no council, but that's a first step taken for a understanding between protestants and catholics.
-2 stability, +2 innovation, -50 dc

1555: Peace of Augsburg
It put an end to the wars in Germany by giving to the princes the right to impose their choice of denomination, catholic or protestant, in their states. Of course, that compromise didn't please Rome.
Option A: Symbolic refusal.
Option B: Call for a new crusade against the heretics protestants.
-100 dc, +1000 cavalery, +5000 infantery in Roma. CB against the countries with any protestant province for 10 years, -100 relation for the same countries.
Option C: Call for the union of all christians in a crusade against the Ottoman Empire.
-100 dc, +1000 infantery, -4 stability, +1 innovation, +1 transport, CB against OE, -100 relation with OE, +10 Austria, +10 Genoa, +10 Venice, +10 Georgia

1 to 10 years after the conquest of Tunisia:
Genoa and Venice, the two merchant republics in perpetual competition, ask for stores and some exclusive trading rights in the port of Tunis. That is a problem. To favour one is to harm the other.
Option a: Let's favour Genoa
+10 relation Genoa, -50 Venice, +1 transport in Tunisia
Option b: Let's favour Venice
+10 Venice, -50 Gênes, +1 transport in Tunisia
Option c: No favour
-100 trade investment, +1 mercantilism, -10 Venice, -10 Genoa

1 to 10 years after the conquest of Samaria
Genoa and Veneto, the two merchant republics in perpetual competition, ask for stores and some exclusive trading rights in the port of Samaria. That is a problem. To favour one is to harm the other.
Option a: Let's favour Genoa
+10 relation Genoa, -50 Venice, +1 transport in Samaria
Option b: Let's favour Venice
+10 Venice, -50 Gênes, +1 transport in Samaria
Option c: No favour
-100 trade investment, +1 mercantilism, -10 Venice, -10 Genoa

30 to 40 years after the conquest of Tunis
The success of the crusade for Tunis had a very beneficial influence for the christian commerce on the Mediterrany. Actually, Tunis was a great islamic pirate center, preying on the christians boats and coasts. Better yet, that victory gave hope for a true reconquest of north africa.
Option A: Let's focus on trade
+50dc, +100 trade investment, +20 Naples, +20 Aragon, +20 Castille, +20 Espagne
Option B: Let's call the Crusade for Africa
-100 dc, -1 stability, +1 warcraft in Tunisia, +5000 infantery in Tunisia, +20 relation with Austria, +20 France, +20 Knights, +20 Nubia, -10 Genoa, -10 Venice, -100 Mameluks, -100 Hedjaz, -100 OE, core on Alexandria
Option C: Let's end the pirates for good on the Mediterrany
-200 dc, -1 Bad Boy, +1 naval, +2 warcraft in Tunisia, +20 Genoa, +20 Venice, +20 Napoli, +20 Aragon, +20 Castille, +20 Spain, -100 Tunisia, -100 Algers, -100 Tripoli, 100 Fez, -100 Maroc, 100 Mameluks, -100 Tripoli, -100 OE, CB for 5 years on Tunisia, Algers, Tripoli, Mameluks and Ottomans.

30 to 40 years after the conquest of Judea
The success of the crusade for Jerusalem amazed all Europe and leased a new life to the credibility of the Holy See. The crowd of pilgrims seems to never ceased to grow, as the settlers, the idealists crusaders and the traders. That raises a difficult question: should we take advantage of it to strenghten ours gains in the Holy Land or should we continue the Crusade?
Option A: Let's fortify Jerusalem
+1 fortification in Judea, Judea converts to catholicism, Judea becomes italian, +10 relation with Genoa, +10 Venice
Option B: The Crusade is just beginning
-100 dc, +1000 cavalery in Judea, +5000 infantery in Judea, -100 Ottomans Empire, -100 Mameluks, -100 Hedjaz, core on Lebano, Aleppo, Adana and Sinaï.

30 to 40 years after the conquest of Samaria
The success of the crusade in Samaria permitted Christendom to establish a powerful base in Holy Land. The cultural exchanges, the pilgrimages and the trade created prosperity for the papal italy. Still, the Holy See had to face two big problems. First, the power of Islam didn't cease to be tremendous. Second, the christian nobility was lobbying for a born again Kingdom of Jerusalem. A compromise had to be made.
Option A: Let's offer Samaria to the keeping of the Knights
+100 relations with Knights, "vassalisation event" for the Knights
Option B: Let's offer Samaria as a principality to one of the pretenders to the throne of Jerusalem.
-1 stability, +1 aristocracy, -1 centralization, +1 fortification in Samaria, +1000 cavaliers in Samaria, +1 warcraft in Samaria
Option C: We are blessed by the Lord! Why compromise?
+1 Bad Boy, -20 Austria, -20 Savoy, -20 Spain, -20 Naples, -20 France, -200 dc, +1 fortification

Event for the Knights: Vassalisation?
By conquering Samaria, the Papal States had somewhat usurped the role of the Knights in the middle east. In a brilliant diplomatic move, the pope offered them the rulership of Samaria in exchange of the acknowledgment of his temporal power.
Option A: Let's prove our humility.
Vassalization of the Knights, Province Samaria to the Knights, +1000 cavaliers in Samaria, +1 fortification in Samaria, -100dc
Option B: Let's decline that poisonned gift.
-1 stability

One thing that would be very interessting:

What happens if the pope ACCEPTS the reformation? Thus changing official catholic position into protestant.

Likely results:

PAP and its provinces becomes protestant, and gets a sizable stab hit. Each catholic state gets an event allowing it to either follow the popes lead (thus staying with mainstream christianity), or stay with a corrupt and heretic faith. Castille for sure should choose the second choice (this would trigger the antipope event), those states which have protestant regions should choose A.

About regions: when the pope becomes protestant, a full group of events could start, that depend on state policy and some other factors, and change the religion of several regions to protestant.

So even if the pope becomes protestant, old-catholic faith wouldn't die out, and trouble will still ravage europe in most cases. But the battlefields won't be so much in the HRE, but instead in France, Iberia and Italy.

Finally, I wrote the codes for my papal states events. I will post them in two parts. The testing will begin soon. In the meantime, I welcome your criticisms and suggestions. Oh, and I have some new ideas of events... :)

No answers? No worry. There is the second part of my events, more fantasy flavored. More controversial, I hope. :) I think I improved on my proposal of luther event. I would also appreciate syntax commentaries.

His Ninety-five Theses had been made known the 31 october of 1517 and judged some weeks later as heretical by germans theologians. It became a very public controversy. One year later, Luther had the support of many german princes and Rome began to worry. All these ideas of reform were becoming more and more radical. Luther got as far as to appeal the german emperor to destroy the power of the pope. The 15 july of 1520, after careful scrutiny of his writings, Rome formally condemned forty-one propositions of Luther and summoned him to recant. It did no good, of course, but at the time there was already no space for a compromise. If the pope had tried for such a compromise, it would have mean more trouble in Italy than peace in Germany."

I'm not sure but I think the events that secede a province to the Knights has to trigger another event for PAP that actually cedes the province...

Arilou is right - the event that gives the Knights the choice to accept Samaria & become a vassal needs to trigger an event for the Papal States that actually secedes the province & makes the Knights a vassal of the Papal States. If you don't mind, I've rewritten 201100, & scripted a new 251126, to accomplish this. I removed the vassal & secedeprovince commands from 201100, & added a new line to trigger 261126 (in italics):

Code:
[color=white] #Vassalisation of the Knights
event = {

	id = 201100 #Triggered by PAP 251125
	random = no
	country = KNI
	name = "Should we join the Holy Theocracy?"
	desc = "By conquering Samaria, the Papal States had somewhat usurped the role of the Knights in the middle east. In a
brilliant diplomatic move, the Pope offered them the rulership of Samaria in exchange of the acknowledgment of his temporal
power."
	style = 1

	action_a = {
		name = "Let's prove our humility"
		command = { type = FORTRESS which = 492 value = 1 }
		command = { type = CASH value = -100 }
		command = { type = CAV which = 492 value = 1000 }
		[i]command = { type = trigger which = 251126 }[/i]
	}

	action_b = {
		name = "Let's decline that poisonned gift"
		command = { type = STABILITY value = -1 }
	}
}

#The Secession of Samaria

	country = PAP
	name = "The Secession of Samaria"
	desc = "In order to mollify the Knights, the Papacy turned control of Samaria over to them in exchange for their
acceptance of the new Papal role in the Middle East."
	style = 1

	action_a ={
		name = "Ok"
		command = { type = vassal which = KNI }
		command = { type = secedeprovince which = KNI value = 492 } #Samaria
	}
}
[/color]

BTW, I will try to comment on the rest of your events shortly.

There are some very interesting ideas here for the Papal States. One suggestion I would make would be with respect to event 251102 (The Soul of the American Indians). Choice B gives the Papal States a conquistador. Would the Papal States have actually have gone into the Americas itself to punish the heretics? More likely, the Papal States would have given support to Spain & Portugal in their efforts to punish the heretics, & perhaps have more strictly enforced the ToT (although I'm not sure how that could be simulated). My concern here is that giving a conquistador unbalances the event, as what human player would not give up 100 ducats & a missionary to get a conquistador so early in the game?

Also, I would say that events 251118, 251123, 251124, 251125, 201100, and 251126 (the last two as I amended above) would be best suited for a fantasy Papal States event file. That is not to say they are not good events, but rather that they represent quite ahistorical actions that most players would probably not want to see occur in each game.
