Is he really one of those people that thinks gear/stats = 1337 skillz, or is he just joking around? Stats should only belong in MMO's where very little skill is needed.

The game is skill based, so armor/weapons are only cosmetic, there is no grinding for better loot. There is also no xp or levels.
There is still alot of customization for the heroes, with 3 versions of each hero and choices when it comes to perks and potions (you have 3 slots to fill with your choice from a list for each category). Think of each game as a competitive match rather then a farming exercise and you get the idea.

Armor and weapons are cosmetic, you might want to get them after farming gold for perks and all those DM cards, although i have to say Centurion armor for a warrior keep taunting me badly and is so cheap too i just might bend that rule for him, looks good even without the helmet, IMHO think it looks even better to go without headgear, after all that's how I rolled in Skyrim.
