im currently using elective law(some awfull stat sons) and the guy i would like as my heir controls directly or via vassals,8 provinces. however,he doesnt even get onto the successor list.there are dukes there with only 2-3 provinces and the big boy has 12. what i would like to know is; why doesnt my guy get onto the successor list(hes not excommunicated,heretic or bastard). is the number of troops that can be raised the primary factor or......?

he already holds more duke titles than anyone else with no effect.previously it seemed to be number of provinces controlled but either way he should at least be on the successor list.
the game ends if he isnt from your dynasty and you dont have someone from your dynasty on the successor list. my chosen guy is from my dynasty
Salic consanguinity is much safer than elective law if you want your son with the best stats to inherit. Though if all your sons have poor stats, and you have, say, a nephew you'd like to see inherit, consanguinity won't help.
I'm going to ask a really silly question. Is he part of your Realm? Just because he's part of your Dynasty, he still has to be a Ruler in your Realm to even have a chance of inheriting under Elective Law.
Edit: I'd better clarify the 'Ruler in your Realm' bit. He has to be a Direct Vassal of yours. A Count with 7 provinces wouldn't be a Successor if he was a vassal of one of your Dukes, even if he had more titles than everyone else on the Succession List. Also, if you were a Vassal in a Realm, other vassals of your Liege wouldn't qualify.

im playing england. my cosen guy is the duke of galloway,hereford and orkney and controls 8 provinces and is a part of my realm tho he recently rebelled under myold king and i had to force vassilise him.the old king died of old age and i want this duke to be the successor for my new king(or rather,i want his son to be my successor but cant give the son titles directly)
sussed it after a few experiments.prestige appears to be more important than titles or provinces.my chosen guy had negative prestige.once his prestige became positive he magically appeared on the successor list

I am still guessing he was excommunicated .... and once he got positive prestige, he got an event that removed the Excom, and thus he reentered the succession line.

Went into one of my Saved Games, changed Law to Elective. The Dukes in the new order of succession were listed according to # of Titles controlled, not amount of Prestige. #1 Heir had 123 Prestige while #2 had over 1100. Went into the Saved Game and edited the new Heir's Prestige to a negative. Went back into the game and now he's showing as #2 Heir. He didn't drop off the list entirely, but he did move down one spot, so having negative Prestige does have an effect.
