Is there something else necessary for me to even be given the chance to vassalize Scotland (the choice is not highlighted).

I'm in the same alliance (Spain is the leader), have a +200 relationship and a royal marriage with them. We do each have a causus belli against the other. I've spent 700+ ducats to buy their friendship over the past few years, and demand vassalization!

I believe I've met all the criteria listed in the window that pops up when I hover the mouse cursor over 'offer vassalization'. If it matters, I have recently upgraded to v1.08 'North America'.

Thanks in advance.

The same thing happened to me. I believe the reason why is, that you have to be the leader of the military alliance and be the one to invite Scotland, or whatever country you wish to vassalize, into the alliance. In my game, after that alliance as Spain as the leader expired, I started a new one with Scotland and was able to vassalize it. Good luck.

Another option is that you are currenlty at war. And so is Scotland. You can't annex/vassaliza nation at war. So wait until the war is over.

I don't think you have to be the leader of an alliance in order to be able to vassalize any of its members. I vassalized Scotland as England in an alliance led by Spain.

One thing the manual and in-game comments don't make clear is that peaceful vassalization/annexation has a random element. The 'requirements' that are listed only allow you to offer annexation/vassalization.

It appears to be heavily influenced by the stability of the target country. Also, relative monarch ratings, economy, and strength of the two countruies appear to be factors.

Don't expect Scotland to accept annexation or even vassalization if they are prosperous and stable, no matter how much you spend.

Personally, I have only peacefully annexed Scotland when they were in turmoil. I have never managed to create this situation, but instead react to events.

Vassals

I am also having trouble with vassals, playing France in the GC, the year is about 1520. I have successfully gained about 10 vassals so far. All of them so far have not been in an alliance with me, only 190+ and royal marriages.

I am now trying to vassalize Bohemia, but they are just not interested, despite 200 relation, royal marriage and members of my alliance which I lead. I have been trying for more than a year to get them on board but no luck. As far armies go my forces must outnumber theirs by at least 10 to 1. Neither of us are at war either.

The only thing I can think of is that I don't have a direct
land connection to them via my territories or existing vassals. Does anyone know if this can make a difference, also considering that the game has been going only 30 years is it possible I have too many vassals too quickly ???????

On a similar note I cannot extract a royal marriage from the Papal States. Despite 200 relation and members of my alliance. This is standing in my way of the entire vassalization of North and Central Italy. I made this approach on several occasions.

Any thoughts ????

If you have to be the alliance leader, then how is it possible that people are making Scotland a vassal as early as 1502-5? Doesn't England start the GC in an alliance lead by Spain that lasts 20 years or so? England can't be the leader of any alliance until that one's over. (I'm at work and don't have access to the game now, so my dates may be wrong,)

Often enough, Scotland breaks her Alliance with France during a war when making a seperate peace after getting bashed by your troops. ;) Normally, I go for Scottish diplomatic annexion when playing England and soon afterward convert to Lutheran/Reformed belief. Ideal for commercial expansion.

I'm stumped because my game has played ought rather differently than most. Scotland joined the alliance with Spain and England (of which Spain is the leader). We've been allies against France. So breaking the alliance hasn't made any sense thus far. Things should get interesting when the Reformation rolls around, though. I'll just bide my time....

Vassilization

Regarding the question of Scotland and 'vassaldom', I also had trouble getting them to accept; tried about five times, actually. However, when Henry VIII made Upton a minister, thereby improving his diplomacy rating considerably, the Scots accepted shortly after. I was still in the Spain-Scotland-whoever alliance, my army was only middlin' size, had a marriage, hadn't converted to Protestantism, etc. I believe it's a matter of 'diplomacy', and trying until you prevail. Looks like Upton was doing his job...

I finally got them last night. Was able to get them in an alliance and fought Spain for a few years together. I raised our relations to 200+ and kept it there for a year or so. I then negotiated a peace that got our alliance out of the war in return for my giving up Calais. I guess Scotland thought that was great because they accepted my offer of vassalage immediately thereafter.

Annex them instead ?

I've only started playing the game recently.

I've gone for the annexing by conqueroring option, as we English did :D. Didn't have any problem after beating the shit out of them for 6 months or so.

Currently spending a shed load on Cologne, Baden & Hannover trying to vassailise one or all of them. Not had much luck yet, but will persevere. Just hope they don't convert religion before I do get them :)

Mightily Confused

Okay, I am very confused. Could someone, in a single list post the requirements for vassalisation and for annexation? Because it is blatantly obvious that the requirements which come up in the little help text are not complete and/or accurate!!.

STOP! STOP! STOP!

If you were just going to post a reply about how you can't always vassalise/annex there's a random chance blah, blah, blah, that is *NOT* what I'm talking about. What I *AM* talking about is getting the option to vassalise and then the option to annex. PERIOD. I want to know what the requirement for both of these events are, the requirements that give you the option.

Thanks,

Welcome to EU Charm!

Charm,

That's the wonder of EU...people just don't know what causes things to happen. Because this is a game set in 1492-1792 the programers have decided to install demons in the game code that defy all logic and attribute much to the results in the game to "acts of God" just like they did back then. It's supposed to get you in "the period" so you can enjoy the game more...

Yes, the drop down menus are incorrect in much of the game. Huzicks (did I spell that right?) FAQ is better but still not perfect. At least he works to improve it as new things are uncovered. Although it would seem like an easy thing to understand, the "rules" underlying vassalization and annexation are very complicated and would be difficult to flow chart. To many changes/variables. Follow Huzick's FAQ and if it still doesn't work don't be frustrated. Just wait until it will work and jump on the opportunity. The diplomatic aspect of this game is by far the weakest.
