I've played England in the Grand Campaign game at the Normal, Hard, and Very Hard levels. In each case, I've followed the same strategy. I did my best to stay out of wars until I became the baddest boy on the block. I converted to Lutheranism as soon as the Reformation hit, and then I aggressively colonized. In the 'very hard game', by the late 1600's I was well into first place and proceeded to take most of Germany after the Hansa offered to let me annex it. I had a huge colonial presence in North America and significant presences in Africa and Asia. I reached the end of one tech tree by about 1650 and the end of all of them by 1700. By the end of the game I had over 5700 points and France was second with about half that number. In short, it was way too easy.

I could play some other country, but I like the colonization aspect of playing England, and I like the isolation that you're able to maintain early on. I find this most disappointing. This is a very good strategy game, but the ease with which you can win with some countries, even at the most difficult levels, reducings it replay value.

Hello Dactyl,

I clearly disagree, in my view replay value is very high. You could try playing as Scotland or Holland, or, for a real challenge pick one of the one province minors in Germany?

greetings, Oranje

Don't play France. I don't know if I was extremly lucky but by 1515 I I had both Explorer and Conquistador Events. Discovered the whole east coast of North America and annexed the Aztecs. Spain wasn't that quick in getting the Aztecs, maybe because I attacked Spain in Europe constantly. For the first time I have more victory points than Spain that early.

Try playing Portugal, a lot of exploring and colonists but no money and small armies (in the beginning anyway)

Hi All,
I am currently playing england, its 1580 and im ahead of everyone in tech, not buy much but I have topsails now :D. I do not take loans, keep inflation to 0.0 or slightly above and maintained my allinace with spain until I had built my fleet up and the first cabot shows up, then I left my allinace with spain and formed one with hannover, brandenburg and some of the other german states. I then focused on building my economy via the bailiffs and naval/ art academy as they became available, oh I also conquered scotland in a two year campaign when france declared war on spain, thus I had no fears of a coalition forming against me. I used a very oppertunistic strategy in that id declare war either against france if spain attacked or spain etc to attempt to prevent the growth of these powers, the game in large part is proceeding historically in respect to colonization by spain france and the portugese. I have restarted the game a number of times after getting my butt kicked by a scottish spanish or french coalition, there are a number of nuances to the game especally in diplomacy that one will need to master to align events in thier favor, as it was historically. I personally love the game and pissed away this past weekend playing it. It has room for improvement, stronger AI better use of military assets by AI, better inflation management, for example spains inflation level is off the chart in the game im currently playing :D perhaps this reflects all the wealth coming in? Anyway my point is as england ive lost badly early on and have tailored my strategy with those lessons in mind, but the game has considerable replay value because each of the 8 major powers requires different strategys, and ultimately one can always edit and play the knights of st john for example and try to take over the med islands etc :D now that would be challenging :D!!!

England gets a huge naval research bonus, so it is very easy to have the best navy with them.

I'm playing England in one game, and have already annexed the Incas and most of the Aztecs by 1520 - was quite easy to do. :) Spain haven't got a foot to the ground, and I'm just waiting (hoping) for them to declare war on me after our forced alliance expires in 1526, for me to take over their colonial empire (I have got some 80,000 men in the new world waiting...).

Yep - England is not very hard to play, but then again, I think any power who can manage to get an explorer and 6 transports before 1500 could do exactly the same thing as I have - land 10,000 men in the new world and conquor the Aztecs.

Perhaps Paradox can create and post a few 'minor country' GC scenarios - I'd like to play Switzerland for example. I have been playing Portugal - but it's too easy as well.
The country I'd really like to play is the Iroquois - holding off the European Invasion.

So, how about it Paradox - as a Christmas present from Santa?

Hello Maurice,

It's really not so hard to make a 'home-cooked' scenario for any country you'd like to play. If the instructions in the forum on how to do it ( the 'quick yank and pull' thread) are confusing, just let me know (email?).
I'd be glad to help out.

greetings, Oranje

Maurice,

As Oranje says, just changing the nations available to play is quite easy. Now if you want to go around editing the nation's leaders, etc. you get into a bit more difficulty. Creating a 'new' nation is the most challenging thing, it seems.
