I'm not sure to what period all this refers too, but here's my 2 cents... I'm talking about a period between 1000-1200...
In Iberia you could have:
- "El Cid Campeador" in the modern parts of Spain (he conquered many cities, but he gave them away to christian monarchs, he only stablished himself permanently and autonomously in Valencia)
- "D. Afonso Henriques" or Affonso (Archaic Portuguese) in modern parts of Portugal (King of portugal, ingame he held the provinces of Porto, Coimbra, Lisboa, Alcacer do Sal, Evora, Castelo Branco, Braganza. He also held for a period of time the provinces of Compostela and Santiago among many others, but these where not maintained...)
These two where considered nighmarish terrors by the moors in Iberia (also Africa and Middle East, Affonso's fame traveled that far on the islamic empire...), earning them many titles and epithets, both by victor and defeated.
Cid might be under castilan kingdom, but he probably shouldn't have any liege at all (he could be either a count or a duke ingame). Most of the time he was independent, fought mostly for cristian causes, freely donating his conquests to cristian kingdoms. Also, he had many quarrels with castilans and, on many ocasions, he fought agaisnt them; many times he fought for the moors against the castillans, resulting in crushing defeats for the castilans...
Afonso was the king of Portugal, son to Henrique, another champion of the Reconquista ("Crusade" on Iberia) and terror to the moors, basicaly they just bashed the moors (and the castilans) left and right :b
On one of the many old quarrels between the castilans and the portuguese, Afonso's mother sided with the castilans. Mother (backed by castilans) and son fought engaged in a battle agaisnt each other, but Afonso won and exiled her.
