Having a problem with the game crashing randomly. I wouldnt really care that much, except that when it happens, Im unable to power down normally and have to hard boot, run scandisk, ect. Its a big pain in the butt. Every time the crash happens, I get "Error in ddhelp accessing <unknown>" (I think, next time it happens Ill make sure) as my error message. I did a search for ddhelp; its in windows/system, with alot of the graphics files, so is this a problem with compatibility vs dx8.1, or what the heck? I dont have a problem with any other game so I dont think my dx8.1 files are bad. Thanks for any help you might have.

see the "running problems" thread and try to run DXdiag. You are right in saying it is a problem with DirectX, however, my version runs fine with DX 8.1 so it shouldn't be the game.

Right-click on the file (ddhelp.exe) and check the version # and post it here please.
Try to rename ddhelp.exe ddhelp.exe.old and try the game again.

Ran dxdiag, did all the tests, it appeared to pass them all. Version # of the ddhelp file is 4.8.1.881

I just upgraded dx and drivers about 3 weeks ago (but before I bought this game)

I defragged 2 nights ago, thinking that might be it, has crashed since then :/

I can try the rename thing but it may take a week or more to know if it helps, the game can run for days at a time without this crash happening. It crashes seldom enough that I wouldnt even bother to ask for help if it werent for the need to hard boot, I really hate to have to do that :/

you have the right version, nonetheless, I would suggest you reinstall DirectX 8.1 (www.microsoft.com/directx).

it could be possible that your latest video drivers overwrote one the directX file and there is now a version mismatch that causes ddhelp to crash.

to help you further, I would need your complete config, as per the "running problems" thread.
