I was finally able to find a copy of EUII in a game collection from Strategy First, so I only started playing EUII last week, but I love the additions/modifications to the original EU. Unfortunately, there have been a number of issues with it. (My apologies if some/all of these are found elsewhere, but this is my compilation for others who may purchase the same six-pack.)
1. Installation does not create the Save Games folder.
I only figured this out after saving a game manually. When the autosave kicked in, the game only CTD -- no error message. After seeing the error message, I created the folder and the problem went away.
2. The intro movie only shows the upper half of the screen, while the bottom half shows the bottom of the EUII splash screen.
Personally, I usually skip intros anyway, but this one is odd. I've never seen one quite like this. Could be color-depth or the DX9 drivers.
3. The installation creates a link in the Start Menu for the EU Manual (a 100+ page PDF
), but it points to the wrong place -- hence doesn't work.
This is just lack of QA from Strategy First, like #1. The manual is located in the root folder of wherever you install EUII, so you can change the link's target to this folder. Apparently, SF doesn't realize the default install path is longer than 64 characters, and their link is truncated to the DOS format.
4. There are links created in the Start Menu for the Alternative Grand Campaign, Vinland, and Independent Europe, but when it loads, there are no scenarios or saved games listed, so they're impossible to play.
Kinda disappointed about this one. After my GC game as Muscovy/Russia started CTD around 1665, I figured I'd try these mods, but I can't. I don't know what I need to do to get this working, but I haven't taken much time to look into it.
5. As stated in #4, my GC began crashing around 1665.
I tried starting from the last autosave and was able to squeak another year of it out, and loaded that autosave and played a couple more years before another CTD. I did this a few times until I managed to play through the 1670s, and now it seems everything is fine once again.
6. What is the point of the debug.txt and log.txt if there is nothing written to them?
After each CTD, I noticed the modified dates of these files were the current time, but there is nothing in them. If there were actually something in them, I might have seen why it crashed.
===================
I've spent at least 15-20 hours playing my first GC and I'm into the early 1700s, loving every non-CTD minute of it. I refuse to look at the events.txt so each life-altering event is a surprise the first time around, although I know the Cossacks are coming. I turned off the "other nation" event messages so I won't see them before I play as them some time in the future.
