Greetings fellow Copts, and thanks for dropping by.

I am willing to give a real go at Prester John and A Blessed Nation achievements with Ethiopia. So far i have tried only a couple of times (i never played a full game) and I had a lot of fun and initial success in playing with Ethiopia, although i was unable to close the deal.

So far i'm able to take all of Egypt and a small chunk of Levant before the Ottomans sack the Mamluks. I have put up a great fight twice, but i always lose eventually. Spain will usually ally with me, but they are never enough to put up a fight against Ottomans, let alone a potential Ottoman-French alliance. I find my biggest problem to be when i get deep into Renaissance and Colonialism (it's really hard to embrace these two institutions due to the unavoidable geographic situation of Ethiopia).

My question is - what ideas in which order do you suggest? Province conversion is extremely important, so i guess Religious comes first, but i'm open to more ideas. It's vital to keep up with military tech, and that exact problem peaks at around ~1500.

Its easier now than ever, with 1.23 :) Just did it yesterday!

Really? Some guys were complaining that it's much harder than before.. Anyway, great job, hope you had as much fun as i did when i played Ethiopia. Any screens to share? :)

Year is 1670 and I finished it in 1660 something. The reason I found it much easier this time around is that mamluks are much stronger, and the ottomans and mamluks will be busy beating eachother senseless, giving you the chance to take egypt before the Ottomans does. Also allies, plenty of countries hate the ottomans and are christians too, so I allied France and Russia and Austria. Ottomans were looking for allies but since I basically wiped out islam from arabia and most of north africa they were pretty much on theirown. I made my capital Alexandria and renamed Constantinople to Johnstinople!

I also wanted to show my religious map, since Islam wasn't the only religion getting wiped out. Reformed and Coptic are the two big winners of Christianity it seems! There should almost be a -1 yearly prestige for all muslim countries if mecca and medina are lost to another religious group, same with Rome.. I mean what do you do without the Hajj or Rome?

My guess would be Jihad and Crusade respectively.

Should I vassal feed with Damot and Hadiya the nations to the south?

You can certainly make use of a vassal, especially for converting all that Sunni land. Don't overfeed them though, i dont like to do that unless i got Influence ideas.

So I took a crack at Ethiopia. Started out okay, clearing out the minors congregating between me and the colonisable terrain, and when I fought Kaffa I also took Medri Bari's coastal province to have the option to start building ships if I decide to go colonial. This gives me a direct border with Mamluks.

Then comes my first big war with Adal. Going pretty well... then I get an Enforce Peace demand from Mamluks. I've enough war score to peace out for my core, but that's annoying. Not as annoying as the Mamluks declaring on me directly a few months later (using a claim their vassal fabricated from across the Red Sea).

Is it a good idea to avoid a direct border between you and the Mamluks early game, or did I just get the short end of the straw in Mamluk expansion direction?

1.26, Dharma, changes the trade routes. Malacca trade now flows to the Cape rather than Zanzibar. Also, there's a new trade line from Ethiopia to the Gulf of Adan. I'd suggest colonizing the Cape ASAP and moving all the trade there. Also, the new Trade Company features make the Europeans route a lot of trade through the Cape.

It really isnt that hard, i got it last week by uniting the horn of africa and home region, wich is easy, then you can just get some subjects in the arabian peninsula if the Mamluks didnt eat it completely by now, if not, just DoW them while the Ottomans are at war with them, then ally the Ottomans, annex all of Egypt and then break alliance and ally Russia. With Russia infinite manpower and vast territory means that you can use him as bait, wait until the Ottomans send his army north, or if he goes to the Levant to fight you, then just hide in Egypt and let Russia do the job

I can't even see Russia as Ethiopia let alone the Ottomans unless they move east into Anatolia.
