Technical Problem

I have a technical problem that I need your help with please.

Game Version & Patch (incl. country): EU2 with SF and PE logos on cover. 1.08, Using NA version.

OS & build/SP: WindowsXP Professional 5.1 Build 2600

Computer, CPU & speed: AMD Athlon 1.4

RAM: 768 meg DDR RAM

Free HDD space: 8gig

Video (brand, model, driver, memory): Visiontek GeForce3 Driver Version 6.14.10.5672 - 64meg

Sound (brand, model, driver): Soundblaster Live! Value - 5.12.2.252

DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0b (4.09.0000.0902)

Other:

I read the stickies but I still have the following problem: Eu2 CTD when it gets to initializing graphics on the startup status bar.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

Unusual, they almost always work in your situation. Try reinstalling again but not applying 1.08, does it at least start up?

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

AndrewT: Reinstalled, didn't install any patches. Game gave me the Video error, but went past it and loaded and played fine.

Castellon: here goes.

Just like to point out that I did try the 16 bit, but it looks like it changed back before I did the dxdiag. I don't remember doing it, but I guess I must have.

Should be set at 16 BIT pls set back to that and try again.

AndrewT: Reinstalled, didn't install any patches. Game gave me the Video error, but went past it and loaded and played fine.

Wait a minute.
What "video error" are we talking about here.

The video error came up when I reinstalled...you know, the reason why you rename the AVI folder. This is when it worked, though, without any patches. I still have not patched it back to 1.08 yet.

Not sure what you are saying.
So it works fine with an earlier version just not after you patch the game to 1.08?

Also use the EU2 config program to set game res to 1024 and turn the music off.
Also set your desktop to 1024 16BIT.

Works fine at 1.00 except for the error with the opening movie (only tried once).

Changed settings like you suggested, upgraded to 1.08, still crashes at same point.

Basically, I have reformatted Windows in the last week. Before then I was running EU2 with 1.07 with no problems outside of an occasional CTD. Those, however, were few and far between.

Any other possible suggestions? Happy B-Day, btw.

Have you upgraded your windows with all the updates critical and recommended?

Are you using a newer version of video driver than before you updated the windows?

Also can you tell me what the error you got "with the opening movie" was?

Also go into eu2 Config program and set res to 800x600, and turn music off, set desktop to 800x600 16BIT and try the game.

Yes I am using a newer driver, however that was only after coming here to try to resolve the problem. I had kept the executable for the older driver on my other HDD before formatting.

The video error was the illegal operation for the Bink (or is it Blink?) Video. I have not recieved the error since I upgraded to 1.08, and was only recieving it at 1.00.

Switched to 800x600 for game settings and desktop settings with no music and 16 bit, still crashes at the 'Initializing Graphics' point.

Well with the AVI folder renamed you would not get the Bink error since the Bink player is not even loaded into memory.

Okay the next thing to try is setting the compatability mode for the game to 640x480

Just a side note, I have also tried rolling back my display drivers with no effect; I have reinstalled and upgraded to 1.07 instead, and the game crashes at the same point with all the lowest possible settings.

This is getting quite crazy that this game is not working anymore...

Still crashes in 640x480 compatibility mode. I am assuming you meant by right clicking on the EU2.exe and selecting 'Run in 640x480 screen resolution'?

You told us earlier that you'd already tried renamed the AVI folder, but now you're saying you're getting Bink problems? Can you confirm 100% that you have renamed AVI to something else and then rebooted, pls? That would explain your symptoms fairly well.

Ok just to confirm. I have reinstalled numerous times during this to try some of the suggestions, and even a few I thought to try.

When I first posted, I had installed and upgraded to 1.08. It was then suggested that I see if it would work if I just installed without patching. That was the only time that I recieved the Bink error. It has never occurred since then. I have also reinstalled and tried upgrading to 1.07 to see if it would work, and it does not.

Sorry if this was unclear in any way.
