Hi, my EU copy crashes. I've read your instructions and I followed them, except
that I don't know what the 'No music' icon is.

Specs:

Pentium IV 1,5 gHz
128Mb RAM
Sound card AC-97
Graphics card NVIDIA RIVA TNT 2 Model 64 (but it's 32Mb)

No DVD or CD-RW

Windows ME (I also tried restoring the system to day 1 and reinstalling EU, to no avail)

Disabled anti-virus, no other apps running and slowed CD-Rom to 470.

Now, what happens is after running the introduction there's some kind of medieval street and
a progress bar that reads 'Initializing sound'. After that, it crashes, usually to a System
Error on address xxxxx (I could write it down if you need it).

Also, I haven't been able to run 1.09 (NA), I don't know if it's related to mine being UK.

First, check your sounddrivers. Goto program files/directX/setup. There is a diagnoseprogram for directX.

Second: if you have version 1.09 or 1.10 (take the patch from the same country !), you can start the program with the No-music-option. Under start, Paradox entertainment, ... there should be the choice EU (no music). You should also try that.
Good luck.

You certainly won't be able to run the North America patch version on the UK game version. They HAVE to match.

Hmm. There isn't actually a No Music icon, it is in the Program files. Go to Start - Programs - Europa Universalis , and there is an EU start option and one for EU - No Music .

When you say "no go" do you mean the patch doesn't run? If so, try try the BEN patch.

2 questions:-

1. What is the name of the distributor on the box: Koch, Strategy First or Blackstar?

2. Where did you buy the game? (Please do not say Ebay!)

I have re-read his post (should have done it the first time  ) and this kind of problem rings a bell to me... I think I remember about people having their game crashing on startup... Do you remember anything on this Uglyduck? I'm sure there was a thread somewhere...

Crashing just before going from the initialization screen to the game proper is usually a sign that the Graphics Cards isnt switching resolutions.
The game will only run in 800 x 600 mode. Make sure that your Card can switch to this resolution easily. Before starting the game set your desktop to 800 x 600.

There was also the story of someone, who's avi-files playing crashed during startup. Because of an DLL, overwritten by a older version.
Maybe Paradox should also make a No-avi option, removing the playing of the avi-files at startup. They are nice to see, but not essential for the game.

I have also had intermittent problems running EU 1.10. At first, the 1.10 patch made startups much faster, but now it seems I bought this with some unreliability. Sometimes, the screen goes black and then the whole computer freezes. Sometimes, the game crashes suddenly, which is very annoying when you haven't saved for a while.

500 Mhz PIII
384 MB RAM
140 GB HD (total)
DVD-ROM-drive
TNT Riva 16 MB graphics card
Windows 2000, maximally patched
Firewire card, network card, modem card (box is stuffed)

I have a slight feeling that upgrading to the latest Detonator driver introduced this problem. I'll try downgrading to the old drivers.

You have to be careful NOT to download those that are WHQL approved; I learned it the hard way :( Took me half a day to get rid of it and re-install old driver. Apparently, they don't work with older products.

Also, there is apparently a problem with patch 1.10, but I don't know if they fixed it...

No luck

Thank you all for your help.

Uglyduck, the distributor was Koch. I bought it in a house specializing in imported games (I'm in Spain), it was 1.07c UK and I've already run 1.10 UK, though there's still no 'No music' option anywhere.

I also tried switching to 800x600, no luck either. It seems to proceed a little farther before crashing (I can read 'initializing interface' barely).

I guess I'll have to throw ME out of the window in the end...

First, did you read this post about uninstalling EU? If not, do so according to the instructions and try installing and running it again. If it still won't work, see below.

You should try re-installing Win ME, you might just have a corrupted DLL or something.

There are still a few things you could try before that, but I'm not sure they are relevant to your situation (it won't hurt, so let's do it anyway :) )
1- go to you System applet in the Control Panel, Performance tab, click on Graphics and reduce Hardware Accelaration to "None".

2- Same place, but File System instead of Graphics. Go to the Trouble Shooting tab and click on "Disable Write Behind caching for all drives".

3- Reboot and install EU again (be sure to completely uninstall it before).

No way

Short of reinstalling Win ME, I've tried it all (800x600, no hardware acceleration, no write behind caching, reinstalling "correctly").

Some complaints too:

- Why isn't that post about uninstalling stickied? Would've saved some time...

- Uglyduck, you say in that post 'people are going around uninstalling EU incorrectly'. I guess it's EU who uninstalls itself incorrectly, isn't it?

Anyway, thanks again, I'll probably say hello when -and if- I reinstall Windows ME

It *is* stickied and always has been.

The problem with uninstalling was that the earlier patches also created extra Register Keys. After that was fixed people were really uninstalling correctly - I saw the posts asking for help!

Re: Forget it

It's not the same post, the 'running problems' post just says to uninstall, there's nothing about manually editing registry and setup.ini there

But you'll know better, maybe it's not necessary anymore...

The post is stickied, but it is in the FAQ forum, that's why you didn't see it here.

Someone did mention a corrupt dll on Win Me. You could try to simply overwrite your current installation, or fork over some cash to Microsoft to buy XP to correct the bugs of WinME...

Just crying like a baby

Hi all, I finally reinstalled Windows ME. EU wouldn't run. I did it all once again, reinstalling + patch + all the little tricks. Wow, it seems it's loading! OK, now I'm in the intro screen, I just have to choose Single Player...what the f*ck, the mouse doesn't move!

Hell, I've read so many AARs that I could already play, I might even try to write an AAR without the game!

OK, forget my tears, but it's frustrating, you know

EU-No-Run AAR: Next chapter: installing Windows 98. Coming soon to your screens.

did you install a specific mouse pointer? If so, try changing it to the default one.
