Hey Leo, love the guide! Although I learnt that mostly by throwing myself into the fire, it's always good to get some more good spread of information out there.

Another good positive for internal trade routes is that they're a good way to transport vital resources to key areas, without having to be dependant on outside trade. For instance, in my latest game, I had very, very limited access to wood due to my unique position, but I had a disproportionately high amount of coastal regions. Setting up a few internal routes let me build fleets when the rest of the world shut its doors to me [no love for Celtic Druids].

Also, trade routes increase in value the further the goods have to travel. A trade route from the Bosporan to the British Isles is far more lucrative than one from Macedonia to Athens.

Great work, though. :]

Thank you for the feedback, Darkling. :) I think I'll revisit the guide at some point and increase the section on internal trade to give more information about the bonuses (also, thanks to Universal Wolf for commenting on internal trade).

I wasn't sure if the value was relative to the civilisation value of the province you traded with or the distance travelled, so thank you for that information.

I think it could be a bit of both. I notice that values increase as the game's timeframe goes on, so I'm not sure. I just recall the distance factor being mentioned in that hulking PDF manual for Rome!

And what about Trade Access and Road Networks? :D ... and river trade of course.

Thx Emperor Leo very much. I purchase EU:Rome and it is gonna come tomorrow :) Gonna be helpfull a lot. You gonna do new guides ? After you done quite a lot you should make it in pdf. format it would be more readable.

Also I have a question. Does EU:Rome boxed version, has printed manual ?

I've added an entire new chapter about internal trade, so have a read through and let me know if I should change anything.

Man alive! I had totally forgotten about these! This guide is becoming huge! Will update tomorrow.

Actually, if anyone has the knowledge; Roads provide +1 Trade Transit. What does this actually mean? Is it an extra trade route? Also, I didn't even know river trade was part of this game.

I intend to write another guide, hopefully tomorrow if I get time. I was thinking of creating a PDF rather than using the forum, but I think I'll put a few more guides out before I implement that idea.

I think the manual may only be on the game disc in PDF format. I got a printed manual when I got the boxed game, but I got that when the first version of the game was released a few years ago. The Gold version may not have a manual (assuming you have the Gold version).

That is great to hear. Keep them coming :)

I order EU:Rome only and then gonna buy VV on GG. Was the printed manual helpful ?

Good idea, playing Rome without VV isn't a wise choice. I suppose it was fairly helpful at the time, but with the VV expansion and so many patches since the release, a lot of the manual is next to useless. By all means read it and keep it handy for basics, but don't rely on it too much. The best thing to do is fire up a game as Rome, Macedonia or Pontus (my favourite nation! :D ) and just play around with all the different options. A lot of people get frustrated or accuse the game of being broken when they first play, so just give the game time. I have owned the game for over two years and I'm still discovering things that I never knew before and I still have loads of fun when playing. I'm sure you'll love it! :)

Oooh, Beleg, I'd agree that Pontus is a good nation to give the game a test-run on. Definitely start with a Monarchy of some kind, at least. I really can't handle running republics, they're so very antagonizing to the player. Maybe I'm just not clever enough to handle the mechanics. <_<

A few other good nations to give a shot for a first run is the Bosporan Kingdom; ally with Pontus and fight your two tribal neighbours of Rhoxolani and Coraxi, and then potentially gobble up Armenia & Iberia to fight the Seleucids.

The new internal trade route stuff is pretty spot-on Leo, so good job. As for River Trade, I know that's in Epigoni, but uh...I don't recall it being in vanilla? Maybe I'm wrong?

As far as I understand, roads with their trade transit boost let you trade across land-locked provinces, as if connected coastally.

If you have three provinces in a line, A - B - C, normally you could only trade between A to B, and B to C, but I think roads allow you to trade directly from A to C. That's my understanding anyway, I'd suggest checking the aforementioned PDF juggernaut for more on that.

I always used to reccommend Macedonia as a beginner's nation, but since the addition of a monstrous Tylis in the last patch, I think new players would be more comfortable with Pontus.

I rarely play as a Republic. I find it to be too much hassle. I prefer to roleplay a more relaxed Monarchy. I'm not cut out for the dog-eat-dog world of a Republic. :p

I don't recall it being in vanilla, either. On a similar note, I'm sure there was a way to activate the beginnings of the Silk Road in the game, but I can't find the information about it. I think it might only be part of the RIMP mod.

Thank you for that info. I'll update soon. Also, anyone who has contributed to the guide has been credited in the main post as it isn't fair that I take all the credit for other member's contributions. Anyone who contributes a relevant piece of information on this or future guides will also be credited. :)

Hey! Duuuude!

Necromancy was banned in ancient Rome I 'spose :p

But I have to say that it brings up a lot of memories to see these names here.. Leo, Achab, Darkling, Beleg.. Oh the good times

Any of you guys around anymore?
