EU2 1.01 saved games are empty or incomplete.

I am having trouble saving games in EU2 1.01. I did not notice having this problem in EU2 1.00, but I am not certain.

Specifically, I am playing the GC as either Eire or Toltecs with autosave on (every year), and saving manually about every 5 years. Early in the GC, up to about 1430, the saved games seem fine and load properly. After that, though, manually saved games are written to disk as empty files or as incomplete files. The autosave games never seem to be empty, but they are incomplete. When I look at the incomplete files in a text editor, it looks like some chunk of data is simply truncated at the end of the file. For example, there will be a series of line with quoted text where the last line has a begin quotation mark, some text, and then nothing - sometimes with the last word being cut off in the middle.

that's a weird one...

Try the running problems thread, it might just solve your problem. If not, come back here and we will figure out something. It's like something is trying to access the HDD at the same time you save... Are u sure you don't have anything running in the background? Some Antivirus software can cause this behavior, or a disk defragmenter running in the background.

I've been holding this until I spotted a post along the same lines.

I have noticed that when I reload from a save game file, not everything is coming back the way I left it. For example, when I save the game position, Muscovy (under computer control) will have a sizeable army in it's capital. When I reload the game file, the army is no longer in Muscovy, it's one province north in Vologda. The army was not in transit when the game was saved.

I can get you the saved games, but since the problem is in the creation of the save games, I'm not sure it will do you much good - especially the empty ones. Even the non-empty games seem to be simply truncated at some very random point (like in the middle of a word in the middle of a line of text). Understandably, loading those fails.

did you try the running problems thread?

If yes, try the following:
go to control panel, system, performance, file system, trouble shooting. Disable everything, reboot and try to play EU 2 (it will be horribly slow if it works). Save the game to see if it works. If it does, uncheck one setting at the time, until it no longer works.
