Many people are going to have problems installing EU2: Asian Chapters. The Following is an explanation of the problem, and the "ONLY" way I have found to fix it. The moderator may want to 'Sticky' this one, to avoid multiple threads.

EU2 as delivered in the "Paradox Strategy Pack", by default, installs into C:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Europa Univeralis 2. EU2 Asian Chapters installs into C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\EU2 - Asian Chapter. NOTE THE DIRECTORY DIFFERENCES. THIS IS CRITICAL with regard to SOUND PROBLEMS, as I will note under installing.

If you install Asian Chapters, as delivered...YOU GET NO SOUND or videos. There are also other issues, such as the act that EU2_Settings does NOT WORK. Game is functional... but Asian Chapters supports two additional parameters which do not seem to appear in EU2: 'AVI = ' which allows a Bink Video before the game, and 'Songs = ', which allows a diffent music selection for each country in each Scenario (a pretty cool feature). Asian chapters also seems to have all the scenarios of EU2, except for 'The American Dream'. You can transfer the EUG file from EU2 to Asian Chapters, and it seems to work.

EU2 and EU2 Asian Chapters ARE NOT MUTUALLY COMPATIBLE as delivered. The installer does not recognize both programs co-habitating on the same computer. Further, Paradox patches will corrupt Asian Chapters, so if you want both, you must do the following: (A) install EU2 fully, including any/all patches you wish to apply, into the default directory. Be sure to use custom and check the "Music" box. (B) make a copy of the entire EU2 install into another directory. EU2 will operate correctly in another directly besides the one it was installed into. This will permit you to have a latest/greatest version (1.08). (C) Delete all the files/subfolders in the original directly, but leave the 'Paradox Entertainment\Europa Universalis 2' directory. You need to install 'Asian Chapters' into this directory. Also, doing this leaves the registry entries from the EU2 install (THIS SEEMS TO BE CRITICAL!)

Now the trick. Use the 'Asian Chapters' disk for the install, and use the 'Repair Files' option. The installer will completely install 'Asian Chapters', and the installed version WILL HAVE OPERATIONAL SOUND. This is the ONLY way I have gotten the sound to work with Asian Chapters. As a bonus, the decibel level is higher than vanella EU2, so this can be a bonus. You can also add the 'Songs =' parameter to any Scenario, including all the custom scenarios currently written, and tailor your music to your tastes.

So someone please confirm the As delivered version of EU2, the newest file on the cd appears to be 'province.CSV' with a date of 3.8.2004. The newest AI is 'Turkey', with a date of 4.11.2003, and the newest event file is randomevents with a date of 2.7.2004. This appears to correspond to version 1.08.

As for Asian Chapters, except for Asian Chapters specific events, the newest event file appears to be major_fra with a date of 2.26.2002. The corresponding randomevents carries a date of 4.18.2002. This seems to imply that some file copying and/or 'fix your own' work might bring asian chapters close to 1.08 EU2.

If anyone has anything more to add, please do. The above is based one extensive testing using both programs as delivered in the 'Paradox Strategy pack.'

Asian Chapters seems to be a modified 1.03

I went into 'eu2aisa' with a binary editor. The actual program carries a tags of "File Version 1.03", "Private Build", and "Special Build". However, the actual compilation date appears to be 04.09.04  With this date, how many "Special/Private" changes are in Eu2AISA is anybody's guess.

With this, it's anybody's guess what this version does / doesn't do. I know that playing the tutorial, there were comments like "you need a tax collector." I know there were some comments in an earlier thread dating/identifying the versions based on this feature.

Thanks for the information.

Jungkhans, I followed your directions, and I have music on EU2Asia now. However, I cannot set my religion tolerance levels now. Do you have this problem as well?

If anyone can help, I'm getting CTD on EU2Asia and EU2. I crash on EU2Asia when getting the mouse-pointer anywhere close to the nation shields in the CoT sidescreens.

In EU2, which I got with the Strategy Pack, it will also CTD when I hover the mouse near the shields in the CoT's. It will also CTD for no apparent reason as well. I renamed the AVI folder to AVI_back, but I don't know how to change the game to 16-bit. Is that just directly in Windows resolution, or is there an option in the game?

The only known help is what you have seen in the other threads on the subject, the one with the edit in particular.
