Patch doesnt install

I removed the joysticks from my computer and device manager, and the game still doesnt work. In fact when I tried to apply the patch I got this message :

the file C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Europa Universalis 2\EU2.Exe is not a valid previous version and can not be upgraded.

What the hell is wrong. Is my CD corrupt. Is my .exe file corrupt. This is just getting ridiculous. Is there anyway I can just get the correct .exe file somehow?

I'll check unto it. It's now somewhere around 2:00 AM in Sweden so I doubt I will be able to get an answer for you tonight, but I will check the other forums and I will e-mail Patric.

I think you have a corrupt CD. Can you return it for an exchange at the store wich you bought it?

How I resolved my problem too

Just in case someone else runs into this problem, let me explain how I fixed it.

I had the same problem as Varian, in that Id click the icon, and the hourglass would appear, then disapper with nothing happening. I did delete the joysticks on my system, but that didnt fix it. When I tried to install the patch however I noticed that it said that my eu2.exe was an unupdatable file.

When I ran eu2.exe off the cd, I got a critical error. So randomly I decided to replace the EU2.exe on my HD with the one on the Cd. the one on the CD was smaller by .01 kb. I did it, and the game ran. It seemed to freeze while loading though, so I exited. I installed the patch, and I reran the game. It worked. And Im very happy albiet exhausted.

I hope this helps anyone who has problems. And Thank you to everyone who helped me, the customer support for Strategy First is pretty damn good.

Happy Gaming!

hahaha, God must hate me. THIS DAMN THING DOESNT WORK ANYMORe.

It seems every time i paste the CD .exe to the HD it will work, but after that it wont. So essentially every time I want to play, I will have to paste the file, and apply the patch. This is a little excessive isnt it?

<sigh> I PMd Patric telling him to come over here, and then after seeing your post, I PMd him again telling him it was fine. Hmmpf. Next time I'll wait a little longer before sending him a PM :)

Tell me, when you right-click on the EU2.EXE file and select properties, what is the version number on the CD? On the HDD, before and after the patch, before and after you played?

that difference could be the copy protection thing. it is on the EXE file on the CD, but upon playing for the first time, it is removed from the version on the HDD. That would be my guess.

A virus would normally add bytes to your file, not remove it. However, it could be worht it to check your computer for viruses with the latest updates. We never know.

Patric replied to me and he had this to suggest:

I would suggest him removing or disabling any antivirus or firewall programs before starting the game.If he doesn't have some then try disabling the DMA option of his cdrom\dvd drive found under the device manager under the drive settings tab.He should be up and running after this.

I know you already disabled the AV and the Firewall since you told me you had nothing else running but explorer and systray. But I'd be interested to know your feedback about the DMA suggestion. Also remove Disconnect and Sync data transer, and if it works, try re-enabling them one by one until it no longer runs.

Maybe Digi should copy the EXE-file to some temp-directory, and then when he wants to play, copy the EXE-file from that temp-directory to his EU-directory. Saves time. But there should be another (better) solution (maybe a new CDROM ??).

I was thinking about a batch file that would automate the process for him. As soon as I have a minute I will write it and send him that by e-mail, unless his problem his finally solved.

My problem hasnt been resolved, and I appreciate your help Viper

as far as the temp drive idea, I tried that, but it seems that no matter from where I run the file, after I exit the game, all the EU2.exe on HD "mutate" into the unplayable form. I also noticed that right clicking and looking for the version seemed to mutate the file too. I dont know what this is.

I have sent my brother to exchange the cd though, im hoping the cd is defective, and the new one works.

I hope at least.

I'm hoping too. :) Tell me how it goes with the new CD once you get it.

This is a very strange error.

You write in a previous message: quoting "as far as the temp drive idea, I tried that, but it seems that no matter from where I run the file, after I exit the game, all the EU2.exe on HD "mutate" into the unplayable form. I also noticed that right clicking and looking for the version seemed to mutate the file too. I dont know what this is."

What happens if you make the other EU2.exe read-only ? I mean, when you start or quit a program, it cannot change other files on your HD.

Same problem

I'm currently having the same problem as Digi, though coping the Eu2.exe file from the CD to my HD doesn't work. I've went thru the thread and tried everything posted, but still had no luck. If his problem was finally fixed, mind posting the remedy?

you'll need to contact Strategy First. Their coordinates are in the "Support options" thread. Provide them with a brief explanation of your problem and post the link to this thread. They should have a partial remedy.
