Hi.
I really would like to work myself into another Paradox game. Have played CK2 and now 3 and Stellaris, but would love to go "a step further" by working myself into another title. I really love the Rome setting, but have learned, that the game development is on pause. So maybe EU4 would be a good choice? Or what would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Alex

Having played a little of both I:R is by far the more new player friendly. EU4 will give you some hints and stuff but, overall in my short experience, it is not very intuitive and expects you to keep banging your head against a wall until you figure things out. I:R on the other hand, I never finished the tutorial but didn't have any real problems jumping to the game and the info you need to understand the game is a lot more accessible in the game itself. The only real issue I had was loyalty, which was easy to fix by looking it up how to deal with it online. So, I would say I:R if you want something you can jump into fairly quick and EU4 if you want to play something where you are going to need to sink a lot of time into to get the basics down.

Thank you for your answer :) so I guess you cannot recommend any good tutorial videos or play through-videos from either EU or I:R?

An then I think about the popularity of HOI4. I know it is kind of another genre, but looks very interesting to me, too. :)

Thanks for your help.

Not really. There are some on the Paradox's YouTube but I haven't watched those and Lord Lambert and One Proud Bavarian each have an incomplete tutorial series on their YouTube pages but I only just kind of skimmed those.

Word of warning: I:R's development has basically stopped ("paused" is almost certainly a euphemism), whereas EU4's is still ongoing.

Which one of those you prefer, I leave to you (there are pros and cons to both). But it's probably the most important thing to be aware of when deciding between them.

Thank you. Yeah, I recently found out about its “pause”. Man that is sad. It seems Paradox wants to focus its energy on the the more “accessible” titles. Would love to see further development on I:R because I simply love the atmosphere, the UI, the graphics and of course the complexity of it. Regarding EU4: I think it’s awesome and super complex, but I think I’ll stick with I:R for the moment and pray to Vulcanus that he makes Paradox continue the games’ development.

A bit of self-promotion (since I’m a member of the mod team), but you can always try the Imperator Invictus mod for IR if you plan to stay with IR. It’s a community fan mod (similar to HPM for Victoria 2) which adds a lot of flavor to the game and generally tries to keep the game alive and going.
