Apparently the 1.29.6 patch for EU4 has changed this:

"Using SDL 2.0.4 instead of 2.0.3 (addressing a graphical issue with some resolutions on MacOS 10.15)"

I just tried launching again and cant see any changes - has anybody managed to make it work properly following the patch?

That is disappointing ... @Gorion3 can you comment on this please?

I'm also seeing the same issue after updating EU4.

Yup, same here. I saw that there is an update and thought "Yay, I can finish this long day of work with a few hours of my favorite game". Nope, still only half screen. [v 1.29.6.0]

I am having these resolution issues on my MacBook Pro 15” 2018, it’s either very blurry text, red bar on top, or big black bars on the bottom or sides, it’s really sad they haven’t patched this, I am optimistic the fix is coming hopefully when the Emperor DLC is out

Have the same issue on Macbook Pro 16 with Catalina 10.15.4.

Found the solution with rescaling the monitor in System Preferences and selecting corresponding resolution in the game's settings.

Maybe it will work for someone else as well. The steps are as follows:

1. Go to System Preference -> Display. And check the Scaled option.
2. In Scaled options select the one in the middle (the one on the left from the default resolution). When you point the cursor over it the comment below the image on the left should tell "Looks like 1536 x 960"
3. Launch the game.
4. In launcher or in in-game settings select resolution 1536 x 960.

After that, the EU4 should work in fullscreen normally (without loss of some parts of the games' screen), but with the rather small resolution of 960p. But at least it's playable now.

Perhaps it could be launched normally with other combinations of the monitor resolution and the game resolution, but I didn't try yet.

Thank you for that update!

Yes, this only seems to affect higher resolutions, basically what Apple call Retina.

SDL was updated to 2.0.4 in 1.29.6 but needs to go to 2.0.12 to fix this problem, from what I can see. I'm updating the bug report now!

Also running MBP 16 inch - tried this fix. It fixed the red/black edges and the half screen etc. but the text is horribly pixilated (see pictures). Do you know is there a way to fix this?

Running Catatina 10.15.4 on MBP 16" 2019 (3072 x 1920 display)
For CK2, Stellaris and EU4 I've have fixed it finally with setting in the launcher 'Borderless Fullscreen' with the launcher then freezing the resolution box to '1792x1120'.
However, for EU4 (and only EU4) the dock and (top) menu bar were still covering the screen, so I've turned on automatic hide for the Dock and in Mac's 'System Preferences' > General, set the automatic hiding of the menu bar.
All works now.

I just encountered the same problem with my 16-inch Macbook Pro when launching CK2. Only half of the screen was showing, I couldn't even change the graphics since I couldn't click on the in-game settings button .

I found a solution that worked for me though. Here's what I did :
- Open the Documents folder, go to Paradox Interactive > Crusader Kings II > settings.txt
- Open settings.txt, below the "size" paragraph, change the "x" and "y" values by 3072 for x and 1920 for y
- Replace "fullScreen=yes" by "fullScreen=no" and "borderless=no" by "borderless=yes"
- Save the modified file and relaunch CK2.

This worked for me, I hope it will with the other users having the same issue.
OMG THANK YOU

Hi there, I know this issue has been discussed a great deal, but I have been experiencing the same matter, and would greatly appreciate aid on it. I realise that you all are very busy, and it likely is an issue with apple, but I really would like to be able to play this game. I tried the solution of the user Seloath, but it would never launch in the borderless mode, and when I tried to use the borderless mode through the launcher, it would lower the resolution markedly and I could not change it. I have a 16 Inch Macbook Pro, and would appreciate some guidance if anyone has any.

A bug has been logged and I have hopes it will be addressed in the next patch.

That aside I only know what's in this thread I'm afraid. Post 34 has some other suggestions.

Sorry about that!

Hey there!

I just found playable solution, just run game in window mode with same resolution as your display scales(1792 x 1120 by default for 16-inch).
And press option(alt)+enter when game has started, it should become fullscreen without borders.

Hope it will help you too :)

P.S. this solution is for EU4.

I found a solution for me to Play CK2 and EU4 on Macbook Pro 16" on Catalina on external Display in fullscreen 3840 x 2160.(Stellaris, HoI4 and Imperator Rome and CK3 don't have any Problems here)
CK2 and EU4 will run in full Resolution

1. Put the Macbook in Clamshellmode (Close the Display only for the moment)
2. Start the launcher and configure your screen resolution and set it to fullscreen only (not borderless )
3. Start the Game
4. personally, I wouldn't play with the display closed but luckily when the game is still running you can now open the Display for better cooling the game still run now only on the external Display until you close it.

I hope this help someone
