It really should be visible at all times, you're spiritually playing as that dude after all.
Not really, I'm not playing as the character right? One of the design principles is basically that, and they keep reiterating that the characters aren't the main focus like in CK. You're playing as the nation, the flag. Not the character.

You're playing as the ruler of whatever government you have, not as the "nation" (because no nations exist during this time without a government, most often centered around a monarch). You're not playing as a dynasty like in CK, but you're absolutely playing as whomever is in the portrait in the corner.

From Pavia.
As this is not CK, you're playing the country, not the ruler.

You're playing as the spirit of the nation.

I don't know what to tell you, one of the earliest and most voiced UI complaints is the ruler being stuck in the space where the nation's flag/shield should be and always was. You can argue for placing him in the lower left like in CK3 but with how the UI is now idk how well that would work.

Had to zoom it in to to make it clear ;)

Also, since the mapmode icons are gone from the bottom middle, you could move the International Organizations icons there which fits in more imo.

Here's the fullscreen mockup:

This looks really good imo. I hope devs note this one.

When I play global empires like Great Britain and Spain I always use minimap to travel through map.

The nation's flag should be in a supplemental position in relation to the ruler, and people who were complaining just didn't like the quality of the 3D-art.

Upper left, lower left - as long as it is on the screen at all times.

I agree and this should be expanded to other games as well, I want Hitler's face on screen all the time when I'm playing as Germany in HoI4

They did not just complain because of the 3D-Element. Also it does make a difference where it is placed in the UI, so I wouldn't say that it's irrelevant at all.

Yeah, at most materialized the player is the crown estate of the nation. Definitely not a particular person. Otherwise, a personal union would need to work differently. The current monarch is an annoying hindrance or nice bonus, but that is not me, the player.

Really hating this needless identification with the leader. It already ruined Civ.
