20 bucks for a revision of mission trees that are part of a different mission tree pack we already paid for? Stuff like this used to be part of a free patch.
True. I'm also worried about balance issues, especially for players that don't own Domination DLC, but own (for example) Mandate of Heaven.

How will it work? I will just get new mission tree opportunities, but MoH content will stay the same?

It also seems likely that most mods will now require Domination DLC to work, since it changes so many aspects of the base game.

I like the idea of Domination (reminds of of CK2 Holy Fury) but I think it would be better as a pack for secondary/minor nations that were untouched by other DLCs released since 2013. Let's call it "Forgotten Minors Revenge Pack" ;) Maybe next time?

Still, patch 1.35 looks promising, 1.34 was a good patch. Nice to see EU4 alive and well. EU4 10th anniversary will happen soon. I still remember my first (Inca) EU4 playthrough :)

The sheer amount and quality of content we've seen in the dev diaries makes me feel that the pricetag is somewhat justifiable.

However, 90% of the features laid out above are already in the game. I also don't think the theme of redoing the big mission trees is very inspiring.

All the same, a good excuse to replay some old favourites!

Are you struggling that badly?
Before the pandemic, PDX was insanely profitable with a gross profit margin of 50%. (For comparison, Walmart's is about 25% and Apple's is about 40%. Software companies usually do better than that, though it's not to be taken for granted.).

But since the pandemic, things have changed.... Their profit margin has gone *up* to about 65%! The core games (GSGs+Skylines) are the lucrative part of the business and the pricing of this expansion shows why. Last year PDX lost millions on non-core games but the core products still generated enough cash for them to double their dividend.

Do by all means buy and enjoy this expansion if it's what you're looking for (the special naval units are the tastiest feature for me), but if it's not your cup of tea the company won't be in any danger.

All these complaints about getting content for countries that already had content in other DLCs is so silly. Imagine people whining new iPhone 16 costs so much when they already bought iPhone 15 last year! The upgrade should be FREE for all iPhone 15 users... Come on now, really?
The devs spent lots of time polishing and updating these missions and related mechanics so why the hell would that come for free for owners of years old content.
You paid for previous DLCs and could enjoy the missions and mechanics included in them for these past years. Now if you want an upgarded version you have to pay for the upgrade, plain and simple.

I agree.

Not only that, but you keep your previous content if you don't activate this DLC.

They say that no plan survives first contact with the enemy, but you’re different. You have the foresight to lay out a centuries long scheme to humble your enemies and write your own legend. The greatest empires in history are yours to command in Europa Universalis IV: Domination, a new expansion coming April 18, 2023.

In this add-on to Paradox Interactive’s flagship historical grand strategy game, you will experience new historical flavor and decisions for many of EU4’s most popular and powerful nations. New mission trees, historical government reforms, estate challenges and units add greater variety and, sometimes, tough choices as you must pick a path in a branching mission, entirely closing off some possible rewards.

Europa Universalis IV: Domination includes new national mission trees and features for:
  • The Ottoman Empire: A revised conquest tree with new rewards for pushing Ottoman dominance, including expansion through the new Eyalet system, and new internal changes, such as the new Janissary estate, the new Ottoman Decadence mechanic, and the ‘Ottoman Power Struggle’ disaster.
  • China: Different mission trees for the Han Ming and invader empires like the Qing. Choose between expansion and Inward Perfection, and counter the power of the Eunuchs to build a more stable empire.
  • Japan: Unite Japan as you deal with the power of the Shogun and the independent Daimyos. Choose to open the country to foreign influence or keep it isolated, while deciding upon different paths of expansion and reform.
  • Russia: Free your country of the Tatar Yoke, and transform it into a Great Empire. Choose the path of Peter’s reforms to modernize the state, so your mission tree as well as your mechanics will change and evolve as the game progresses. Use the power of Cossacks and Streltsy to expand your Empire to East and West.
  • Spain: Expanded mission trees for Castile and Aragon, with different paths to form Spain, a new mechanic available for the new ‘System of Councils’ government, and decisions about the Army and Navy to get the mighty Tercios and Spanish Armada.
  • France: Fight the end of the Hundred Years War, centralize France into an absolute monarchy while dealing with the Wars of Religion, expand into Italy and the Holy Roman Empire, and lead the Revolution through an expanded mission tree.
  • Great Britain: Separate paths for either a British Empire or an Angevin Britain, as well as a deeper internal gameplay, with unique features for the English Parliament and changes to the English Civil War disaster.
  • Minor nations: Mission changes, new government mechanics and expanded flavor for Prussia, Portugal and Korea.

Domination also includes new art and music alongside a rich menu of new historical detail, adding more flavorful estates, reforms, special units and events to the leading powers. It will also be accompanied by a major update, free for all Europa Universalis IV players.

Those who pre-order Domination will receive a bonus music pack, March of Power, with six new tracks to enjoy as accompaniment to your conquests

Europa Universalis IV: Domination will be available on 18 April 2023 for a suggested retail price of $19.99/£16.75/€19.99.

Pre-Order now!
Steam
Microsoft
Epic
GoG
(Important! Please note that you must buy Domination on the platform where you own the base game)
Will the pre-order bonus be available for those having subscription?

More like if the phone you already bought got software updates that you have to pay for, and these software updates make your phone unbalanced and make certain apps really out-dated and unusable, but instead of these issues being patched for free, you then also have to pay for more updates to fix 'em.

But honestly the Iphone comparison is pretty good, because Apple (which is also a horrible company so well picked there!) actually does do similar thing where software updates basically make old hardware unusable. It forces you to pay them more even though you don't really want to.. but now you have to, because the company whose product you're using has broken the product.
Its just that at least when you buy a new phone you actually get a new phone, not an old one with a differently coloured case (read: new mission tree) and Apple's software updates which make your phone slow are at least free, whereas Paradox's DLC's which make your game unbalanced (and more often than not broken for a few weeks/months) costs you a lot of money. And now you get to pay them more money to fix those inbalances. Hurray! [profanity moderated out]

But apparently, having the games you buy be balanced and fleshed out isn't just you know just normal expectations from game-development, but a sort of privilege that you have to pay extra for. The fact that you pay for the Mission Tree mechanic and then have to basically pay again for every country to get to use it, is like you paying for a new OS on your Iphone, and then also having to pay for every app you already owned to be compatible with it.

PS: I could honestly defend it if they had reached the point where they'd given us mission trees of similar size and powerlevel for the whole world or at least relevant countries in every region (you know, what we paid for when we bought the mechanic) after they launched the feature, and were now doing another round where they're updating the main players. Would have happily paid for that! But we're still stuck with major parts of the world barely being touched by the mission tree mechanic (Middle East particularly) while others continue to get more and more outlandish which further outdate already existing ones. That to me feels like a truly malevolently designed money making machine which has nothing to do with making the game better or more fleshed out.

I'm guessing you're the kind of person who buys a new Iphone every year. Not everyone is like that.
They're entitled to make whatever content they want and price it however they like, I'm entitled to be disappointed and not buy it.

I must admit, I am surprised by the high price tag for what I consider to be a rather small DLC pack.

You seem to have done a wonderfull job with this DLC but sorry I'm not gonna pay 20 € for skins I will never see because they die early on or missions trees we already paid for some nation.
Plus the pre-order "bonus" on a DLC is very bad, I dont encourage that.

Definitively an interesing patch but not at this price, I'm gonna wait

So which snake-tongued suit in the marketing department decided to add some pre-order FOMO to a mission tree DLC? Did you fear you harvested so much blubber out of your whales that you are in danger of not hitting sales targets? What exactly is the end game of the product here? CK2 capped with the masterpiece that was Holy Fury. But EU4 seems to want to go a different path and live forever like some lich sucking every bit of life force it can out of whichever loyal customers remain.
