Production tasks are performed in the slowest and most inefficient way possible.
Why does every item have to be carried in tiny amounts?
Why do production buildings / kitchens only have enough space for a single item's worth of ingredients to be crafted? so that every time they just have to go right back out and pick up the same items over and over again?
Why don't carriers just bring the items that the workers need so they don't have to stop?

For example, I have a colony of 230 people with 5 fully staffed mess halls, with over 20,000 food resources at their disposal and yet they cannot even keep more than 12 meals in storage.

Neither was I when I started.
But I was annoyed at the game, just like you. Then I go learn how to fix it, because I know my pet peeves are not the Devs' priority. I guess you could say the right problem found me at the right time. As Covid hits just about the time this game got into its Early Access release cycle of monthly patches. So there was nothing else to do, but learn modding.

Now with my Resource Factories and the Debug mode, I can do just about anything I want except for those tied to the map, mapseed, camera, and a myriad other things I still hadn't bothered to learn or just not have any ROI of my time and effort anymore.
Can't justify the time. Need to eat, and pay utilities and internetz...

Well the problems I listed are not simply annoyances, they are bad game mechanics, causing an unpleasant experience for their customers.

Sure, it is bad mechanics according to you, as that is how you play it.

It is not bad mechanics to the devs, maybe? As that is how they designed it?
So many reasons why it is designed that way - team skill level, time allotted to development-QA test-release cycles, unity features 4-5 years ago when the game was first drafted and designed, and so many others. We are not privy to these reasons, so there's no way of saying why it is designed in this way.

You're coming at this game 4-5 years after the fact, after all...when they had welcomed ideas and feedback during Early Access way back in 2019/2020. They have been away from these forums for months now, no Iceflake Devs nor Paradox Community Manager presence since before Rebirth was released.
The chances of getting the game re-designed at this point of time is slim to none.
