Excommunication Question

My 12 year old count just got excommunicated. 2 questions: why did this happen, and how can I make it stop?

The entire world has now put a claim on me, which since I only have 2 provinces basically ends the game for me.
 
Off the top of my head (it's been a whole since I played and I occasionally get game mechanics mixed up with EU3, which also has excommunication).

Basically, it happened because someone close to you was made Papal controller and you had a low enough piety (from memory) that you were easy to excommunicate. Difficult to stop, other than keeping your piety very high (hard to do as a lowly two province count at times), because the AI is programmed to excommunicate anyone nearby that they can easily excommunicate.

There may be other ways to avoid it, I am not sure. In EU3 you could simply keep your relations with the Papal states high, but pretty sure that doesn't work in CK.

That seems somewhat silly, but okay. Thanks for the answer.

Against all odds, I've survived. My count is now 32 and has been excommunicated 20 years. Is there a way to become non excommunicated? Or am I stuck this way until my count dies? I noticed a guy next to me was excommunicated but got the sentence lifted.
 
the only way that I know is that one, someone around you who is the Papal Controller lifts the excommunication sentence, or there is an even which fires that requires you to pay a nice little sum in indulgences to get the sentence lifted.
 
I don't think the AI will revoke excommunication on anyone ... so you have to wait for an event to fire, that allows you to pay your way into the Pope's good graces again.

but you could be stuck with it for a while.

But since I haven't researched indulgences yet, I assume that option isn't open to me? I am probably just going to have to wait to die.

Is there a way to see who is excommunicated rather than clicking on each individual? It would be useful to help grab titles cheaply.
 
IIRC there's an option in message settings to give you a pop-up when someone is excommunicated?

Other than that, look for anyone and everyone grabbing a title off someone in your logs.

And no, I don't believe that researching indulgences does anything in respect to excommunication.
