Perhaps as an optional setting then, if it's not a problem to add to games?
That would be a bigger problem. This means that Paradox would have to make 2 maps, and that takes time. A lot of time.

It always seemed kind of a good idea to me to avoid the horrible misaligned Pacific distances, but eh.

And brazil being is at the same latitude as Mali instead of Kongo lol.

IMO this is the biggest issue of Europa Universalis 4. For a game about colonization, this is quite bad.

If that is your biggest problem with the EUIV map, you should look at the map one more time.

But the mercator projection is the surface of a globe stretched to a square. Now if we could unstrech it...

Google does it all the time. They edit the Google Earth texture in a Mercator format and then just paste it onto the globe.
There are 2 problems with that.
1. Paradox doesn't use the Mercator projection. They use a modified version of Miller cyllindrical projection.
2. Mercator projection is quite ugly.

All one needs, is to descale the latitude by a factor of 4/5 and the map is ready to be pasted on the globe.
I know, but the Americas are a few thousand kilometers too far to the north. Problem is that the 2d map would be hideous. To make the globe, you need to include the poles etc, and I don't want to have the entire southern part of the map being ice.

As far as 2d map is concerned, there is always the possiblity of giving the engine a command to crop the base map between the latitudes 80N and 60S for the 2d mode.

IMO Spore did its 3D civlization stage map pretty well. Although it failed to expand the strategic mechanics beyond the basic three ones.

Rather than make a globe i would like to see the map on a 3d table to walk around in a throne room thingy....
That would be cool, but I think it would be very annoying after a while.

The only problems i can come up with is sending ships around the world would be a but annoying to need rotating the globe around all the time. And the curvature would make it problematic to select and direct units on te curvature. the more to the edge the more difficult it would be to select units and direct them.
So you need to center your view more than on a flat map.

There would be more panning, but we would also have a better map.

screw 3D. i'll do a three SIDE map! paradox needs to make the first game with a triangle map!:)

screw 3-siDe. I'll do a CIRCLE shape map. It will have the realistic shape of the globe, but none of the disadvantages! Paradox needs to make the first game with a circle map!;)

no no the only solution the the holy dodecahedron!
If we are lobbying for different shapes then I vote for a Cube.
You know it must be the most efficient shape since the Borg use it.
And just think you could have 6 different alt-history empires going on at once.

The Borg is always right therefore I am also voting for a cube. (Damn I have been assimilated by the Borg)
