I'm an experienced Paradox player and with pretty much all versions of Sim City, etc. I've heard that the current state of this game was fairly simplistic. It looks like it is similar to the original Outpost, which was one of those games that I always loved but it never loved me back.

What are player thoughts? Is this game in good shape? Are there key mods that one should download to round off some of the rougher edges of the new IP?

You would found game pretty easy, however first or first 2 runs could be enjoyable.
If you would want to jump into some sort of competitive maxing scores it is sadly very luck dependant in map randomized setup, however this might be dealt in near future.

Its biggest problems for me right now are a dependency on randomness over systems that create intresting chalenges, and that whether you want a game of surviving on a hostile planet, or a chance to build a colony on a new world you will be ultimately dissapointed. There simply isnt enough meat on the bones of either to satusfy, nothng is deep enough nothing offers enough options, or possible solutions, to stand on its own.

There are big things to overcome, but becase theres only ever one way to handle them once youve solved the issues theres no more to be done.

What's the metagame like? Is the game "too easy"?

As with all paradox games out of the gate its either too simple or so complicated it wobbles when you lean on it.

this game is the former.

its getting better already with randomization of tech trees and extra selectable difficulty rules. but till a substantial dlc id say wait for a sale, this game is solid but can be better.

Depends where you like your difficulty. If you like building around randomly having to start without easy access to vital resorces, or unpredictably being hit by natural disasters I'm sure the latest patch would offer you all the chalenge you could ask for. If like me you preffer playing with supply chains and the social adaption of creating a new funtioning technological society and rising to the cultural chalenges, then its ranges from too easy (once you know how to adress a need the solution will never change, nor will alternate contexts requre a new responce becase there are no alternate rseponces) to non-existant ( life on mars is the same sol 10, and sol 10,000 , opulation 12, or 1000 ).

I got a save file that would definitely challenge you.
It has combination of permanent cold wave, raining down meteors, and electrostatic dust storm coming, with no farms in sight and only has two rockets.

I rate it the same as I rated Stellaris or Cities Skylines on release. Good baseline that needs to be built on to make a great game. Once they have expanded the mechanics more it'll be great. Currently, well, its a great baseline.

So.... it's like Banished?
