Ancient Armenians called them Aluank with -k being an ending. It most likely meant friend in old Armenian.
Aluan without -k ending was rendered as Alvan(ia) or Alban(ia) due to Greek not having standard system for b or v sound. Latin writers usually used b spelling resulting in Alban(ia).
Similar thing happened to Ireland/Hibernia. Primitive Irish Iweriu to Greek Ivernia to Latin Hibernia. H probably comes from association with latin word hibernus meaning related to winter.
