I haven´t seen this addressed, so I´ll bring it up.
I managed as Spain to Explore the coast lines for both North and South America, by Columbus, and I never went to port, I was only stopped by Columbus dying of old age.
How you ask...easy.
Reorganize the fleet, put one ship in the new fleet, then hit them again and recombine them, voila, zero attriton.
