I can´t recall this being discussed before. If someone at Paradox could tell us a little about the game mechanics for handling the explorers in the early middle ages, I would be happy.

And there were many, from the Vikings like Ingvar and Leif Eiriksson, to the brothers Nicolo and Matteo Polo. Others like Carpini and Willem Ruysbroek are perhaps lesser known, but important.

It makes sense in terms of explorers like columbus but explorers like Marco Polo werent opening up new frontiers as much as exploring mysterious yet known ones. If anything, it should be an event ( this game has events, right? ) or something to show the profits Venice reaped upon his return. Not that it matters really since Venice isn't playable, but think of the possibilities! :D

yes on second thought, I guess exploration by the playable dynasties wasnt a big issue. It could either be included or left out and still have the same result.

Isn't the map too small to allow for much exploring? :) It would rather be events telling you that some representative from your dynasty has found some chunks of land in the West or been treated to fried rice by the Chinese.

Iceland was in fact quite close to a republic in its social stratification. Laws were passed through the "Allting" (a sort of all-citizen congress), and only reluctantly did Iceland accept the overlordship of the Norwegian king. Very little landed nobility existed in Iceland. Mostly due to there not being all that much farmland. ;)

Iceland's most important influence on Norwegian affairs probably was the writer Snorri Sturlasson who wrote the sagas about the kings of Norway. :)

I agree. Remove the explorers and use events if explorations are needed. They were a distinctly minor thing in the time period anyway if you compare to the age of explorations.
