EXTREME ram usage...

hey guys.
i've played ck3 on the same computer many times and never had this problem untill now. ck3 uses 9 GB'S OF MY RAM EVEN AT THE START AND I DONT EVEN HAVE ANY MODS. can someone help me with this?

i cannot even run the game without it literally hard crashing my pc and ive played rdr2 and cyberpunk on medium to high settings without having a single problem...

here are my specs:
-amd ryzen 5600 6-core
-nvidia 4060
-16 gb's of ram

The game has not changed since November, so if this only just happened it is some local issue I guess.


Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Crusader Kings 3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings III/ folders - In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK3 or Documents CK3 locations, before installing again.
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.

THEN Right click on ck3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

- start the game with no mods active and test


If those don't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.
IF dxdiag.txt fails to attach here, rename it to dxdiag.log , or zip it up.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log

i did everything you listed and nothing changed, the game still uses 9 gb's of my ram and if i contiue running it for the next 5 mins its gonna crash my pc.

I don't see any cause of this in those files, except I think you are a bit short of available memory.


Please expand your Windows paging file maximum size to 32gb

AND exit every other app you can before starting the game.

im gonna be honest with you andrew.
im not trying to insult you or the game which i have 300 hrs in and love to play but this is a 2p map painting game man. i played rdr2 w discord, 2 chrome tabs open at the background PLUS STREAMING IT and my pc didnt even stutter. when i try to play ck with a single chrome tab open at the back my pc hard crashes after 5 mins. this has to make sense to you somehow.
not on that, even ck3's system requirements dont ask for 32gb's of ram? as you can see it says 8 max there and i have 16?
type in "ck3 ram usage" on google right now and you'll see at least 5-10 ppl having the exact same issue as me. the game wasnt like this, i dont know who did but this game is ruined and unplayable right now. bc i bought it in 2022 i cant get a refund too so im stuck in a position where i cant get a refund and CANT EVEN PLAY THE GAME DUDE.
can you please, like somehow help me out here? in any way possible?

There is no magic tweak I can give you to reduce memory usage for the game; it requests what it thinks it needs, and in your case and hardware it seems to be not getting it. That minimum requirement was written when the game was first released in 2020 and so takes no account of DLCs or later game patches.

When I start a new campaign it uses ~8.6gb, so comparable to what you see. So I think that is normal now, and as you play on it no doubt uses more as te board gets more complex.

Please make the changes I suggest and see if they help. I have encountered many such reports since recent patches, as you've also seen in Steam that you mention, and doing that has helped.

i did, nothing changed.
i think yall should change your system req's because it isnt accurate, it requires 32 gb's of ram for someone to play it.
and no i dont think its normal for a 2d strategy game to suck 9 gb's of ram.

Hello, i have the same problem. But in my case its 14 gb!! Game use 14 gb and start lagging, all actions with big delay. My PC have 32GB, geforce 3080. And before everything was awesome, with youtube on background.

i dont think they can help us.
the game -for some reason- eats our 10 gb's and in denial to change their system req's about this to scam more ppl into buying their game.
its hidious, before like persian dlc the game wasnt like this at all. myy pc can run aaa games but not ck3

my system log is empty bc there is no point of keeping the game downloaded if i cant even play it, so here is the rest.
and nothing is wrong with my computer man, your game changed, thats it. there cant be 15 ppl having the exact same problem while others w no issues... how much gb's does it take to run ck3 on your pc?
i dont even thing you can help me anymore, im just sad that ppl will still be buying the game and even being able to play it bc the system req's are wrong.

Is that at the start of a new unmodded campaign? Or later on when things get more complex on the board, OR with mods in use?
