It's one of the major things i would love to see in one of these space games.

Naturally not a detailed province like system. More on the scale of continent's that can be owned by different factions. Would also be great to make ground combat more interesting. If you had to fight over control of the different sections of the planet.

Yeah, this is one of the reasons why I thought a province-map for each planet was unlikely - even a very vague map like the one used in Risk has 42 different territories, to which you would have to add sea provinces. Assuming 50-100 provinces per planet, and one or more planets per star system, with 1000 star-systems that's a minimum of 50,000 provinces.

Maybe Paradox can pull that off without the game becoming a micro-management nightmare, I don't know. Interested to see more.

Yea i would think of something like 3-5 controll zones depending on size of planet. Some might be so small that they only have 1-2.

Iäd rather see faction controll of planets handled by % than with discrete provinces.

Provinces are important for many reasons. Like terrain. One province could be desert. The other one would be steppes and the next one be water. Things like this are important too.

percentages with resolution down to 0.1% means 1000 provinces, and that's much more important than terrain.
