I am unable to get beyond the launcher, it pops up with error 'Failed creating render backend'.

I have already updated Windows 10, my Intel Processor and Nvidia graphics card.

Any other recommendations I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

Regards,
Tom

**EDIT**

I have tried reinstalling Crusader Kings III, still the same issue.

The launcher itself is okay, this is trying to start the game from it, is that right?

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK3/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/CK3/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

Yeah the launcher boots up no problem at all.

I have ran the DXDIAG as you suggested and attached it to my response.

Unfortunately I couldn't find the logs folder you mentioned.

I am wondering if my issues could be graphics card related as I have a Nvidia GTX 660 (been thinking about getting a new PC for a while now)

P.S. Sorry for the delay in responding to your message.

Quite literally the same issue (filed to bug reports because I was already sleepy): link. I am very much afraid this could be the "usual" issue called "DX 12 is not DX 11 and there's no way we can see through this".

The 660 is a little above the published minimum of the 460, so that should not be the issue. The recommended is the 1650 FYI.

Is that the whole error?

Try doing a Steam verify against the game, does that find anything to fix?

Thanks for letting me know will make sure my specs are beyond that if I decide to buy a new PC.

Yeah that is the entire error, it just won't launch the game beyond the launcher stating 'Failed creating render backend' after clicking play in the launcher.

Tried doing steam verify it found nothing that needs fixing.

Out of curiosity I just tried playing Imperator Rome (not played it since launch week) and that is saying the exact same issue when I hit play on the launcher.

But Stellaris has no issues that boots up from the launcher no problem at all.

Do not know if this helps or makes it more confusing.

**EDIT**
Crusader Kings II also boots up no problem at all (but guess that is less surprising).

What if you run imperator.exe and ck3.exe directly from Windows Explorer, rather than via stam and the launcher? Any different?

The other thing is we are having problems on some laptops with dual Intel/nVidia video setups - not that specific error though. There, weirdly, the workaround is to revert the Intel video driver (!) to a 2015 one.

Try this: run the nVidia control panel, Manage 3D settings. Force ck3.exe onto the "integrated Intel" option rather than the nVida. Does the game then start?

Hi Andrew,

I was unable to get CK3 or Imperator to run via the exe files you suggested.

I was also unable to access the NVIDIA Control panel to alter the 3D settings as it was saying I am using a display not attached to a NVIDIA GPU.

However I am very pleased to say I have managed to get the game run now.

I decided to redownload and reinstall the graphics card driver, this managed to get it to work no problems at all now.

Thank you for so much for your assistance with this I very much appreciate it :)
