Failure Series - A Novgorod AAR

Welcome to my first AAR. I don't know much about the history of Novgorod, so bear with me making everything up. Normal difficulty, 1.3.

The Merchant Republic of Novgorod, 1453-1467

Yeufimei II wasn't happy about the fact that his court consisted mostly of bickering old war buffoons. Of course, expertise in warfare could never hurt when all of your neighbours hated your guts, but he disliked having nobody around him who understood anything about economy.

The peasantry were granted additional rights and large armies trained. Yeufimei thought that perhaps if the peasants felt they had something to fight for, they wouldn't always break when they outnumbered the enemy.

Novgorod's merchant houses tried to get a foothold on Lübeck, but the Hanseatic League was formed and eventually Novgorod's trade declined, even though she adopted national trade policy. She was approached with an alliance offer from Ragusa, but as nobody knew what the heck was Ragusa and where it was, the messenger was considered a madman and was sent away.

Mad or not, he infected Yeufimei with some kind of an anthrax variant, and the nation was mourning. Well, heh, not really mourning as the new boss
TheNewKing.jpg

instantly gave orders to mobilize the army and march to seize Finland from the kingdom of Sweden, who fought a losing war against the black metal commandos from Norway.

But that was obviously too good a plan to work. Teutonic crapsuckers immigrated to Novgorod en masse, most of the immigrants wielding shabby bronze swords, shovels and whatnot, and her armies were forced to react. They started marching to Ingermanland, and soon battle would commence...

Konstantin made a mental note that Novgorod needed roads, as getting from point a to point b took so long that he seriously doubted that if he'd march to the lands of the teutons he would ever get back.

Well the point was moot for him, as he was adopted by an immigrant family and was never heard of again. His successor, Rotislav, was a man unskilled in so many ways it was thought that he was some kind of an antigod. Luckily the republic's armies fought valiantly, or at least they were very good at pointing imaginary firearms at their enemies and yelling "Blam!". Needless to say, the front lines moved often.

Meanwhile, the great trade houses negotiated with the Hanseatic League, and Novgorod got membership. Her trade income dove in to new depths. She also allied herself to Lithuania, the local juggernaut, in order to prevent such migration-invasions in the future.

Teutonic Order demands all of Novgorod's money and it's ports and whatnot. The peace offer was turned down, and russian peasants marched to Estland, while the Teutons sunk Novgorod's forgotten two cogs. Victory was assured. For a while. Then some 7000 mercenaries dug a tunnel right next to Rotislav's armies and butchered half of them in a clever ambush. Rotislav was chased back to the gates of Novgorod, from where they lost the chasing teutons and marched to free Ingermanland and Neva. When the Teutonic Mercenaries assaulted Novgorod's capital with their 10000 troops, Rotislav paniced, and pleaded the teutons for a peace. He demanded 50 ducats.

"Finally peace!", thought Rotislav, "We will take time to build our military and economic power, and then our enemies shall be... Um.... Destroyed!"

"No fragging peace and rebuilding then, I guess. Sheesh."

The war is going pretty well, with Rotislav's armies sieging Vologda, mercenaries sieging Tver, Lithuania singing campfire songs next to Muscovy's borders and our regiments marching for Moskva running in to some dread warlord Ivan Shock IV who beats our armies and spoils our milk. How nice. Again, Rotislav panics and demands for Ninji-Novgorod and Vologda, which his armies had occupied.

PeaceAtLast.jpg

"Meh.", thought Rotislav. "Well, perhaps we should grab Tver when Muscovy seems to be in deep trouble with Lithuania. Like, when nobody's watching."

Novgorod went and occupied Tver, but it was discovered that it was impossible to demand anything of the King of Tver, since he was a vassal to Muscovy. All right, then she demanded Tver from the King of Muscovy. Well heh-heh, she couldn't really do that, either. Well, she demanded the release of Tver and Muscovy to give up some claims, and it was settled.

Peace, finally! No! There's a few large revolts, some of them teutonic immigrants. In the another side of Novgorod, the side where her armies are not stuck in with nobody willing to give her military access. So. 5000 troops are sent to deal with the rebels.

They lose as many times as they fight against the rebels, of course, and the situation seems grim until the rebels march to Finland. Now, Novgorod needs only to drive the rebel garrisons out of her capital and Vologda.
WAAAAAAAGH.jpg

Sadly, the army was not fast enough.

But now, everything was peaceful and quiet, and Novgorod could invest in trade and training a larger army. Heheheh, what nonsense.

Rotislav will lead us to victory!

Ok, perhaps not. It was decided that Novgorod needed at least one capable commander, so, she promoted the fairly experienced Yaroslav Nagiye to the rank of a general. He would surely be feared, even though he had in himself propably only a fourth of the fearsomeness of Muscovy's great Ivan Shock IV.

And feared he was not. But at least Novgorod's hairy mercenaries destroyed all opposition whereas her regulars fled even at the sight of the enemy.

As Kazan eventually started to crumble, Rotislav hired another general, a very talented man, well ahead of his time. This Akim Nagite dreamed of a time when troops would carry portable cannons, and how he would lead them to victory. Sadly, his conventional, present-day leading skills were not any more impressive than Rotislav's or Yaroslav's, but anyway he was ordered to lift the siege of Viatka. To everyone's suprise, he was successful, with outnumbering his opponents only 3 to 1.

With the siege lifted, Rotislav again paniced, out of habit, and demanded Pensa and Simbirsk. The Kazans had no choice but to accept, as Lithuania was still involved.

After the war, Rotislav was still alive, proving to the people of Novgorod that god had indeed cursed them. Their money was 3% less valuable than before, they had these suspicious guys, these muslims inside their borders and despite the best efforts of the great trade houses, Novgorod's trade was diminutive.

EDIT : Sadly, the final failure is : botch in installing a mod, save destroyed.

I only played as Novgorod once before. An EU2 game that lasted all of five minutes before I got gang-banged. I wish you better luck than I had. :)

Well - in EU3 it's not easy to let enemies destroy you - good luck! Maybe you could build more civilised Russian Empire...

I think we've all had rulers like that. :)

I like your style, I'll be interested to see where this one goes.
