Deccan (Brinton)

Once again, the spaceport was bustling with activity, as the Grenadiers prepared for departure. Merchants brought everything they needed, while the Technicians checked all systems again and again for the next long travel in space.

It was also the time to say goodbye to everyone one had met and maybe made friends with. There had been parties with the other Mercenary Companies, knowing that somday one may find oneself on different sides of the battlefield. But here and now one had fought together. Then there were the officials. Martin and Kate had visited Sobolewa and some other members of the local government one had contact with during the recent months. Maybe it was not a hearty, but nevertheless respectful au revoir.

Koch stood at the ramp of the "Fortune" and monitored the situation with all the people around. Eventually Emily approached him.

"Look over there.", she said and pointed toward two people at the edge of the dock. He had to take a closer look before he recognized them.

"Arthur and Miss de Groot.", he said. They seemed to talk to each other. And they were not happy, as it seemed from the distance.

"You have to do something for them.", Emily said.

"Me? Why?"

"I overheard that she got fired at ComStar. And that you know why that is so."

Koch bit on his lip. He did not know about the former. But the latter was most probably true then. He did not like it, but he really had to do something.

A few minutes later Arthur and Melanie stood hand in hand in Koch`s room. Arthur looked worried and a bit angry. She rather shocked and desperate. Obviously she had cried a lot.

"Arthur. Would you leave me alone with Miss de Groot for a while."

Art looked her in the eye and smiled toward her, as to say that she should not worry. Then he walked out of the room. Koch offered her a seat and gave her a glass of water.

"I am sorry that ComStar has no further use for your talents.", Koch meant. "May I ask what happened?"

"You know that all too well.", she answered with a suddenly angry tone. "You told Art to make me search the communication logs."

"You did not find anything, right?"

"NO! AS IF THAT IS IMPORTANT! But my superiors found out and immediately fired me.", she said and began to cry.

Koch gave her a tissue. Yes, it had been his idea. He had hoped, that this young woman would maybe find something in the communication logs of ComStar, that would help him to find the mole. Unfortunately that was not the case. Of course it had been manipulative to make Arthur and her do that. Art must have been convincing. Or maybe she just loved him too much. Anyway, these results were his fault. He wanted to help her.

But there was a slight problem. She was alive. Maybe he was paranoid when it came to ComStar. But such a secretive organization has probably more harsh measures to deal with people who play false with them. What if she did not get fired under the condition, that she serves as freelance informant? Was that even possible? Anyway. He had his debts toward her.

"Miss de Groot. I`d like to make you an offer."

Space Transit

Lunchtime. The Canteen was filled with most of the Crewmembers besides those who had duty in the cockpit and engine room. Emily monitored the people in the room. It was always the same. There were small groups of two or three people who came together to have a small talk while eating. Every now and then one heard laughter echoing through the room. Then there were people sitting alone in front of their meal. Some looked tired, some as if they were not in the mood for company, some had brought work or something to read.

And then there were special cases. At the other side of the room, a bit apart from all others, she saw Arthur and Melanie. One reason why she loved Martin was that, although he could be mindless about other people`s feelings and fate in an almost atrocious way, on the other hand he was able to be the most caring person in the whole Periphery, especially when he realized that he did something wrong.

It had been his idea to offer Melanie a job as Technician aboard. She was not sure whether it was just to give her a perspective in life or because he wanted those two to be together and happy. But the latter was definitely true. She saw how they talked, looked and smiled at each other. How their hands met every now and then. Young love is beautiful. Of course there was no guarantee that it would work. Martin, in his rare romantic moments, used to quote a saying from his homeland: Jedem Anfang wohnt ein Zauber inne.

And this magic of a new beginning could be witnessed right here.

Samantha (Taurus / Taurian Concordat)

"How are you today?", Morisol-Chaplin asked the Protector.

"It is a beautiful day, Elena.", he answered and one could tell it was true, since he used her first name. She smiled a bit. Since the successful operations on Brinton and Enkra and the demise of the Terrorist Organization, Calderon`s mood had improved. With a lot of reason. His popularity among the population had reached new heights, since the general perception was that the fortunate end of the threat came due to his crisis management and efficient management of government institutions.

Additionally the anti-Federation tensions of the people were gone as soon as it came to light, that a group of renegade Aurigans were behind all of this. High Lady Kamea had been reasonable enough to send a public address to the Government and the people of the Concordat, in which she regrets the horrendous crimes that had their origin in Aurigan territory and offered her condolations to all victims and their relatives. The fact, that she allowed Taurian forces to enter the Coalition and eliminate a Terrorist Base also contributed to the fact, that resentment toward the Coalition was low.

"It was a harsh winter, wasn`t it?", he said as he began to read the mail.

"Yes, Sir. But the new year will be better."

"I am not sure about that, Elena. We will have to stay careful."

"What makes you think so?"

"Gut feeling. I can`t prove it, but something big is going on. Someone wanted to make us go to war. If said someone goes to these lengths to achieve that, then something larger is developing behind the stages."

Morisol-Chaplin nodded. More out of kindness than actual agreement. What had happened was surely disturbing and it was yet unknown, what the actual motive or goal behind it was. But something larger? What would that be? And what role was a conflict in the Periphery supposed to play in such a scheme? She was sceptical about the Protector`s gut feeling. Was he expecting another large war? There was nothing indicating something like that. It was peace and one should be happy about it.

Avalon City (New Avalon / Federated Suns)

Hanse Davion and Quintus Allard sat in their weekly meeting to discuss the matters at hand.

"Here are the latest reports concerning the Taurian developments.", Allard said and handed some documents to the Prince. Davion needed some minutes to read the information, before he gave the report back to Allard.

"This is interesting. If Maximilian is behind those Terrorists, do you think he knows something about our plans?"

"Rather not. These events began shortly after Galahad 3026. You know how upset he was. As far as I am concerned, all of this was designed as some kind of diversion. If he had succeeded and there had been a war in the south, we would have had to deploy resources toward the border, keeping us occupied."

Hanse nodded slowly. "You are right. But just because he failed this time, does not mean that he won`t try again. We will have to keep an eye on the Periphery."

"What are your thoughts about that ECM device?"

"Bah.", Davion said and made a dismissive gesture with his hand. "Down there it may make a difference. But in a real war with hundreds of Regiments and thousands of vehicles? No. But it tells us, that the Capellans are trying everything to keep up with us. Since they are outnumbered, they want to compensate that with Technology. I have to admit, that I am surprised. By the way. Send a message to the High Lady and thank her for sharing this information with us. I think we should express our gratitude for this cooperation in the future."

"Yes. Anything else for today?"

"No."

Allard gathered his documents and prepared to leave, when Hanse Davion suddenly had a thought.

"One more thing, Quintus. What about that Mercenary? The one who had the plan for Sledgehammer?"

Allard thought for a moment. "Interesting profile, to be frank. Served in the LCAF until the Loyalty Expulsions of 3024. Went to the Periphery and established a Mercenary Company, financed by some higher echolons in the Commonwealth. Had a prominent role in the Arano Restoration and still good ties to the High Lady. Went back to the Commonwealth for a few months before returning to the Periphery, where he got hired by Calderon. Why?"

"Maybe we should extend our gratitude to him too. There is no harm in having a reliable friend down there."

I have not been here for some time. I feel like writing a final story for this. Are there still people around to read it? :)
