I haven't played CKDV for a while, but recently after watching Arn: The Knight Templar, I feel like going back to the game.

That movie will revive your enthusiasm in the game, if you've watched the movie you know what I mean. :)

The interesting thing is that both Paradox and the movie were Swedish.

Those books are so fucking bad. The main character is the worst mary sue I've ever seen.
What I'm saying is the film is probably shit as well.

You can dislike the book without being so vulgar or forceful about it :eek:o. That being said, A Song of Ice and Fire is supposed to be good and it sounds as if it'd fit CK well.

Those books are some of the best fictional medieval literature I've read, much of the story is based off of the War of the Roses, and the Crusades against the Cathars.

What's a mary sue?

The author (consciously or unconsciously) projects himself onto a character, and then writes that character to be really awesome at everything or otherwise fulfill his fantasies. More or less.

I liked the movie though. Arn does turn out pretty awesome, but he's a movie hero, so it's not that grating.

Isn't A Song of Ice and Fire a fantasy book with dragons and magic and other such "fluff"

There are dragons and magic, but not very much of either compared to, say, Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. There are certainly no wizards running around hurling fireballs. Dragons are extinct at the time of the first book.

And really the characterization, political machinations, and attention to detail with the noble houses is far better than most historical fiction I've read. Plus the divestment from real history allows the author to really surprise you (there are plenty of deaths that are hard to see coming).

A SoIaF mod for CK would actually fit perfectly, I already unconsciously assign CK character traits when I read it. ;)

Wow! Indeed great inspiration for CK (2 ;) ).

Did you mean this movie;) ---->>

I like it a lot.:) (did not read the book)

I'm not too picky also, when medieval thematic movies are in question. There is not that many of them.

Some that I like also include:

The name of the rose
The war lord
Andrei Rublev
Henry V
Kingdom of Heaven

and of course "the emperror" / "matrix" for all Medieval movies (and not only medieval): Aleksandar Nevski

Although, it's a total fantasy, mentioned book "The song of ice and fire" is great stuff. Highly recomended from me, also.

Not that there are any fireball-hurling wizards or dragons in LotR itself. The Hobbit and other works that happen before it, sure.

Please forgive my nitpicking.

If the book has a corny love story, non-existant acting, and incredibly lame battle scenes, then yes, the film is almost exactly like the book.:)

Also, a Song of Ice and Fire is awesome (and I believe the plot does borrow quite a bit from the War of the Roses?)

ARN (there is actually two parts – two movies) is great. In tradition of great spaghetti western movies – and I mean it, in best possible way. Who like this historical period and this kind of movie (like me) it’s perfect combination. If you are of those like Kaleidoscope or Tambourmajor, who approve only Oscar worth movies with unbelievable story and only DeNiro kind of acting, stay away and wait (until your death, I guess:rolleyes:) when that kind of film is going to be made.

By the way: Did anyone watched 13thWarrior? How’s that?

On subject of The Song of Ice and Fire, there is a comic book made by Dabel Brothers on stories from George RR Martin.

Hedge Knight (also two sequels, acctualy 2 X 6). For those who like this kind of entertainment another source of inspiration for CRUSADER KINGS plays.

Another comic books. Hermann Huppen made a serial (14 books I think) called Les Tours De Bois Maury. I’m not aware if there is English translation (too bad) but for those who can read French or any other language that this comic book is translated (Serbian for example, like me) also recommendation. Very human stories from 11th century no fantasy dragons and such.

Now that this thread has been bumped already, I might as well comment that I checked the tvtropes entry for Arn, and he has been toned down somewhat in the movie - at least the first one. You know, that whole sex-before-marriage thing, even though they were going to get married.

According to some definitions he's not really a Mary Sue either, since he actually is the main character, instead of taking over the stage from someone else, but that's really neither here nor there, and I don't want to get into an argument about it.

The movie is really bad guys....Its historically inacurrate...Even the Battle in the Hattin Horns is shown as a raid of the Muslims while in truth it was a formation battle...The only nice movies about the Medieval age are Kingdom Of heaven and ''A knights Tale'' with Ledger...

It's a matter of taste. And while I did like those other two movies as well, I think claiming them to be historically accurate is a bit of a stretch as well, not just with Arn.

Not that Kingdom of Heaven is the most historically accurate (though the Director's Cut aids in that regard, and indeed in every other), but there's a veritable gulf between it's accuracy and that of the embarrassingly-bad "Knight's Tale."

i didnt mean that the ''Knights Tale'' was historically accurate but at least it was funny and entertaining while Arn had some big gaps in its plot and it showed battle as the opposing armies played tennis and polo..Come on Arn is a really bad quality movie....

For quality historical fiction one might try the Welsh Trilogy by Sharon Kay Penman, or the Angevin Series by the same. Though at times the books almost read like a discussion between historians.
